Album Review

Anyone still hoping that Sam Beam and Iron & Wine will ever go back to the lo-fi sound of their first album might as well give up on that pipe dream. On the 2005 EP Woman King, Iron & Wine's sound is more produced and varied than ever. The record's arrangements are overflowing with a wealth of percussion, vocal harmonies, banjos, violins, and pianos. Beam's vocals, while always a thing of beauty, sound more assured and powerful than ever. Iron & Wine sound like a real band here; if you heard them in a big-budget Hollywood film, you wouldn't even flinch. The widening and smoothing of the band's approach does Beam's songs great favors, too. While his songwriting is as emotionally direct and haunting as ever (no amount of studio sheen could change that), this EP never feels insular, as his previous albums sometimes did. It sounds widescreen and universal. Woman King is too short to be considered the high point of Iron & Wine's career — it certainly points in that direction, though.

Awesome

I didn't like this when I first listened to it, but as I persevered it really got under my skin. I was expecting the slow, folky sound of the first two releases, but this, for the most part, is foot-tappingly uptempo. In fact, it's the slower My Lady's House, which is probably the weakest track. Lyrically, Sam Beam is on top form and remains one of the most poetic composers currently writing. He hasn't got the most musical voice perhaps, but is able to make the most of what he does have, and the result is beautifully crafted songs. Gray Stables is never out of my top five most played list.

First class

Having been recommended the iTunes live EP on the useful but now gone 'Just For You' option, I bought this as well. Both are magnificent. His song writing is superb and this EP has a mix of more expansive sounds in tracks 1-3 and more haunting sounds, especially track 5. There isn't a bad song on this and having owned it now for 4 months it only gets better.
