Album Review

When RPWL singer Yogi Lang says (in the liner notes) that "the world depends on our ideals and moral concepts, and so it finally depends on our mental development," one can only hope that the "we" he's referring to is humanity in general, not his band specifically. (One also rather wishes that he'd clarify that bit about equating mental development with morality — is the problem with tyrants and r****ts that they aren't sufficiently smart?) That said, his band certainly is smart, and its music is a pleasing — if frequently longwinded — combination of hooks-wise pop songcraft and expansive sonic ideas. The lyrics are a bit heavy on woolly headed, whoa-dude philosophizing (sample line: "If the world is one big plan, why must we lose our innocence?"), but the pop-smart, almost Beatlesque structure of "Start the Fire" and the tight, muscular "Roses" can go a long way toward making lines like those go down easy. Ditto the absolutely gorgeous chorus of "Sea-Nature," which would be a completely brilliant song if it were fewer than eight minutes long. "Sleep" also avoids greatness just barely, mostly by bringing in faux sitar and rudimentary slide playing. Those who are leery of the new prog rock may not be converted by this fine album, but those already so inclined will love it immediately. [The 2006 edition includes one bonus track.]

Simply Brilliant!!

I discovered this band by chance a year ago and I've been an avid collector of their music ever since. Comparisons are bound to made with Floyd but these guys make their own sound and create a whole different road of prog to travel. The compositions are well wrought with craftsmanship and musical precision but that doesn't make it samely, the emotional content is tangible, the vocals mellow and meaningful. As a whole this is a superb album and a must have addition to any serious lover of great prog. Don't miss out on their other stuff either but this is a great place to start.. Enjoy!!

Get it - You will not be disappointed.

I got this album on the word of a friend who decribed RPWL as 'Pink Floyd, but happy'. Result: the best album I have ever brought form iTunes! RPWL don't rip the Floyd off, but they tastely borrow the concept of long songs, with good guitar soles and sound lyrics (eg: New Stars are born). This is all combined with an Indian twist, notable on World Through My eyes and Sleep, creates an album with variety but not far out randomness. They are certainly more rock like than some of Pink Floyds far out stuff, and this isn't a bad thing. To sum up, this album is an £8 risk, especially if you haven't heard any RPWL before (and as they are criminally unheard of, this is likely) but please, please get take that chance! It will be a wonderful gift to your ears.

Pleasantly surprised

I'd been looking for an age for something new to excite my senses and finally I stumbled upon RPWL. This album is refreshingly good from start to finish but I particularly enjoyed the tracks 'Start the Fire', 'Roses', '3 Lights' and the awesome 'Wasted Land'. I can't stop playing this exceptional album, best thing I've heard in an age.
