Album Review

Does It Offend You, Yeah? wield their synths like rock stars — but, for that matter, they wield their guitars and cowbells like rock stars, too. The Reading quartet's debut album, You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into, has no problems synthesizing (so to speak) dance music and rock; of course, it's hardly incompatible for a great dance album to also be a great rock album. Comparisons ranging from !!! to Klaxons to A Flock of Seagulls are all apt, since the group doesn't spend much time forging its own identity before branching out into everything from new wave to synth pop to organ-driven surf rock. The first few tracks could all be show openers, from the squelchy "Battle Royale" to the single "We Are Rockstars," a distorted and, yes, cowbell-laden statement of purpose. From there, things get really interesting, beginning with the above-average synth pop homage "Dawn of the Dead" and the frenetic "Doomed Now," a new wave exercise that builds intensity as its robot vocals go on. "Let's Make Out" manages to be both faithful and prurient, summoning the same disco-punk spirits as !!! at their best (even while the title is shouted continuously throughout each chorus). It's easy to tell why Does It Offend You, Yeah? have earned such praise as a live act from the energy and intensity heard on these recordings (drummer Rob Bloomfield makes a difference, providing everything a good rock band needs). At their peak, they strike the right balance between the mature, assured Simian Mobile Disco or Vitalic and younger upstarts like New Young Pony Club. And despite relying on too many tricks from the Daft Punk playbook, they prove there's more up their sleeve than just vocoders.

Amazing Unique Sound

Does It Offend You Yeah are what it would sound like if Justice, Daft Punk and Digitalism held a wild, out of control stag party, consumed vast amounts of spirits, got thrown out of a sleazy strip club and puked up all over the pavement. Every song is completely unique, ranging from album opener "Battle Royale" which bears a striking resemblance to Justice's "Waters of Nazareth", through the vocoder laced robot rock of "Doomed Now" which tips a hat to Daft Punk's "Human After All" album, to closing numbers "Epic Last Song", which brings to mind the poppy indie-rave anthems of Digitalism, and "Like The Way I Do" which sounds like a sleazy-yet-radio-friendly Fratellis B-Side. This is truly a great debut. Recommended Downloads: WE ARE ROCKSTARS LETS MAKE OUT DOOMED NOW EPIC LAST SONG BATTLE ROYALE

A triuph

This is an absolute treasure of an album. I cannot tell you enough how much you will love this album. Yes the lyrics are not dazzling and some of the dancier tracks become a bit repetitive but on a whole this is an awesome album. The singles I heard before I brought this album, I found okay. From Weird Science to We are Rockstars, I enjoyed the track but could not majorly see what all the fuss was about but still brought the album anyway and now it is one of my favourite albums of this year already. Songs like Dawn of the Dead and Being Bad are an absolute amazing few tracks. Does it Offend You Yeah? really have given me a treat and no matter what mood I am in I can stick this album on and enjoy a mix of rock and dance perfectly crafted to a masterful sound which I can enjoy again and again. I love these guys. Keep on going boys, your much better than alot of the same old stuff out there. Top work.

Does it Amaze Me, Yeah?
