Description
This e-guide on the butterflies of North-West Europe is part of a series of mobile systems for identifying species in nature. These apps were developed as part of the EC KeyToNature project aiming to provide easy access to flora and fauna information.
This app contains:
- Information on 145 species of butterflies (habitat, distribution, flight period, etc.)
- Where appropriate, information and drawings of subspecies
- Distribution maps for all species
- An interactive key for identifying species
- An alphabetical list of species with a search function
- Hyperlinks to similar species
- All names in English, Dutch, French and German
This application is an adapted mobile version of the CD-ROM 'Butterflies of Europe', published by ETI BioInformatics in cooperation with the Dutch Butterfly Conservation (ISBN 90-75000-41-3). The identification key is based on 'Butterflies of Europe' by T. Lafranchis (2004).

Customer Reviews
Dreadful
Don't waste your money on this app - I wish I hadn't. No photos, and no illustrations of the butterfly in its normal resting position - only 'set' specimens with the wings spread out unnaturally. It is incredibly badly designed so that you have to scroll back to the top of the screen every time, just to get to the navigation buttons. I bought it because I thought the key would be useful, but again it is only of use if you have a captive butterfly - the very first question is whether it has a wide or narrow head, then it goes on to ask about spots in discal and postdiscal areas, at which point I gave up.
