On Rails? Who cares?
Having heard about this game being on rails, I wasn't too sure whether to pick it up or not. However at this price (£1.79) you can't pass it up. The on rails aspect actually works very well and is ideal for the iPod touch/iPhone. The graphics are great, some of the best available in the appstore, and the sound is very good. There have also been complaints about the length of this game. True, you'll finish it in a few hours but what do you expect for an iPod touch/iPhone game? It's also pretty fun playing on the Free Play mode and improving your score so there is definately some replay value. One thing I feel could be improved on is the aiming controlled by the accelerometer. As effective as this is, I would have liked to see a sensitivity option as sometimes you have to tilt your device so far to one side that you can't see what you're doing properly. However this is just a minor issue and does not take away from the great gameplay. Hopefully the devs can address this in the next update and make a good game even better. At this sale price, don't hesitate, buy it now. Don't miss your chance!
EDIT: Id Software have listened and made this great game even better with the new maps, challenge mode and the added sensitvity option. 5*
Sky high production values
I didn't know what to expect from an iPod Touch/iPhone Doom experience, especially when it's on-rails. Admittedly, I got it in the Quakecon sale but after playing, I'd happily buy it at full price. Visuals are pretty good for iPhone/Touch and performance doesn't suffer as a result. Don't expect oldschool Doom, expect an on-rails shooter that makes good portable play.
Don't be put off by it being on-rails
I bought this for £5.99 about two weeks before the sale offer, and you know what? I'm not even gonna complain.
It's an on-rails shooter, which might put some people off, but those people are missing out. The tilt-to-aim controls take 5 mins to get used to, then you'll find yourself in a superbly atmospheric shooter. A tip though: I found it very hard to control 'til I inverted the horizontal axis, which is weird as I would never need to do that. Try reversing whatever your usual preference is.
The graphics are stunning, and given how many FPS titles on the app store have unweildy, unsatisfying controls forced on them, id should be applauded for trying something different. You spend less time wrestling with the controls and more time shooting things in the head, so (as counter-intuitive as this sounds) Doom Resurrection manages to be more immersive than any "proper" FPS I've played on the iPhone. Well done id!
