Meetup, a great app that could change your life

Ok, that sounds so dramatic, but it’s so true
It can be hard to find new friends but Meetup can help
Meetup is an easy to use app that allows you to join and search for activities or groups in your area. Whatever you like to do socially there is usually a group that has people who love similar activities
You can start a group in your area and put on events yourself
It is definitely worth downloading the app
So if you live in Bolton and like crocheting beanie hats or if you live in Sheffield and you like surfing standing up, again who knows?
Ok, it would be hard to surf in Sheffield as the river Don wouldn’t be ideal, but you could arrange for a long weekend in Cornwall
Meetup is not 100% perfect, very few apps are. They have recently changed the number of characters you can use when putting an event on, makes it hard to give a good descriptions, but people have found ways to make it work. There are charges for organisers, most people ask for donations from group members, there are always some who won’t contribute, but I feel it is still worth downloading it and the cost of my groups is small when shared by all.
Who knows, you could end up with a social life and make new friends. Stay safe 😀

Organisers App is pretty pointless

Creating an organisers app that only has flaws and no benefit was a bad idea and one that should have been made in consultation with the meetup community. The organisers app is unstable at best of times and it does not provide one single benefit to organisers. Very occasionally you implement new features like the check in function but because the app is unstable, it does not support new features. The tech team cannot replicate the issue and so there is no solution, not great. So even though theoretically good features may be possible, they are not made available. Also, my events are free, I only charge maintenance fees to pay for the meetup page and you now started charging £0.60 on top of the £1.50 fee that I am charging. I think that is pretty bad considering that there is no additional service provision from your side to justify that as I am already paying the meetup fees. All in all, meetup has really made a change to the worst over the last two years. I wish there was another forum that I could use instead. My community is pressing me to move them somewhere else.

A virtual meeting up of groups of interest

This app strives to be a platform where people can join groups with titles of their interest and see what the organisers of the group mean by those titles. Like any system of groups and any language, there is ambiguity, overlap and things change over time; which one can see as inefficient, disappointing, shocking, wonderful, inspirational...all depends what you project onto it, give to it and take from it. The app itself seems to function well by the standards of these times, as I write this at the start of 2020. Doubtless things will continue to move. I hope they evolve, involve and resolve in a way that continues to be of benefit to us, one and all.
