Description
The most comprehensive collection of design classics available at a special introductory price for a limited period only.
This authoritative and meticulously researched collection charts the story of product design over the past 200 years. It was years in the making and was compiled via rigorous selection process by an international panel of design-world insiders, including architects, critics, curators, product designers, auctioneers, and historians.
The application offers, at the touch of a finger, access to an encyclopedic, illustrated history of 1,000 timeless design classics by not only renowned designers, such as Marcel Breuer, Achille Castiglioni, Le Corbusier, Jasper Morrison, Dieter Rams, Eero Saarinen, and Philippe Starck but also anonymously designed pieces, such as the clothes peg, the corkscrew, and the chopstick, that have stood the test of time.
Presented in a beautifully rendered, 3D environment, the application has been built to take full advantage of the large Multi-Touch screen and advanced capabilities of iPad. The objects are organized chronologically, easily accessible via a timeline at the bottom of the screen. Material contained in the application includes archival photographs, original sketches, patents, prototypes and informative text with precise information about the product, designer, manufacturer and the object’s historical context.
From cars to chairs, from tableware to cameras, from toys to airplanes, the application features products that are most often still in production today, largely unchanged since their creations.
It is an essential resource with extraordinary value for anyone who appreciates great design.

Having bought the actual books...
Having bought the actual books a few years back (for a lot more than this app costs I might add!) I didn't hesitate to buy it as I know what a comprehensive and varied record this is of the design world. As a designer myself it is a great source of inspiration, although anybody who is only remotely interested in the area will love browsing it's contents.
My only criticism is that the initial flying images method of browsing you are presented with, is a little chaotic, but you can easily change that to a "cover flow" style, with the click of a button.
So based on the fact that the hard copy set of book will set you back around £80, i would say that the current offer price is very good value, and it's a he'll of a lot easier to carry about!
Content great but access is annoying.
Each item has sub images connected to it and thats good and the photography is all good however you cant make you own faves from the 1000 for next time and there are no web links ie. im looking at an Eames chair so link me to Eames office or Vitra/Herman Miller. The floating cloud of objects mode is just annoying, I ended up going through the whole thing and screen grabbing the content using the home button and sleep together to make my own version of the book so I could leaf through later or use as desktop backgrounds.
Could be better, but not much
I have to agree with the others who have said that the interface could be better. Drop the flying pictures as there is too much going on at once on screen. Often the picture only becomes identifiable just as it disappears. Scrolling backwards with the finger on the slider doesn't make the pictures go in reverse. The pictures just start to reflow from where you let go, so you get a second chance to try to stab at the screen on the image that you want. The "contact sheet" view is something that could be made better use of rather than the flying pictures. I would also like to be able to run the app as a picture frame, but you can't.. I would like to be able to search for something. I thought that I recognised the Herman Miller Aeron chair, but it whizzed past. No search facility to go and find it.
Some of the choices of item are odd, Sammy Miller's Bultaco Sherpa, but not his Ariel HT5 or the Montesa Cota. I suppose that you can't have everything in there! One thing that you realise is all of the things that you have lusted after over the previous years of your life, and somehow managed without.
Edited for v1.11
Much better with the search facility added, but search for chair and you realise that almost a quarter of the database are chairs!
