Biography

Gyratory System is the hallucinatory sound project of talented London, England-based musician Andrew Blick. A veteran session trumpet player, Blick has played with the likes of Cinerama, Grooverider, Solex, and Moonshake and was a member of the Food-signed '90s act Octopus as well as the Daniel Patrick Quinn-fronted One More Grain. Such stellar performing and recording experience led the legendary John Peel to remark in 2000 that he would have to ban Blick from the BBC Maida Vale studios, as he had appeared on so many Peel Sessions. It was the demise of One More Grain in 2008 that led to the formation of Gyratory System. For many years, Blick had been working on "The Process," the modus operandi that drives Gyratory System. "The Process" is a clever construction of sounds and ideas and takes more of a scientific and cerebral approach to how music can be recorded. Influenced by steam engines and engineering grandeur, Blick builds blocks of sounds using idiosyncratic formulas, reminiscent of avant-garde artist Steve Reich. Signed to Angular Records in 2009, Gyratory System released its debut album, Sound-Board Breathes (a line from Milton's Paradise Lost) in October of that year. With help from his father, Robin, and other likeminded session musicians, Blick engaged in making an album that encompassed the free-flowing street jazz of Miles Davis' 1972 classic On the Corner along with the avant-garde funkiness of '80s post-punk bands such as A Certain Ratio and 23 Skidoo.
