Biography

S-Club is one of England's contributions to the teen pop revival of the late '90s. Originally called S Club 7, the band was originally formed with seven members in 1999. Packaged by Simon Fuller, the group was comprised of Rachel Stevens, Paul Cattermole, Jo O'Meara, Tina Barrett, Jon Lee, Bradley McIntosh, and Hannah Spearritt. They veered from the boy-band formula by having both male and female performers, but their goal was the same: record bubblegum songs that appeal to kids and have a slick look that is simultaneously attractive to young teens and inoffensive to their parents. The group debuted with its own BBC TV show and immediately struck gold with its first single, Bring It All Back, which shot to number one in Britain. It began a string of ten consecutive Top Ten hits in the U.K. The band's initial three albums were hugely successful; however, their fourth, 2002's Seeing Double, was the first one not to debut in the Top Ten. Cattermole left the group to return to his old metal band, Skua. He formed Skua in school before he joined S-Club 7. After Cattermole's departure, the group shortened its name to S-Club. O'Meara recorded a solo single called Different Kind of People, but remained with S-Club. In April 2003, the pop group announced their upcoming May split from a show live at London's Docklands Arena. S-Club had 10 top five singles and four multi-platinum albums during their four-year reign.
