About Sparks
Growing out of the minds of brothers Ron and Russell Mael, Sparks is one of pop's best-loved and most influential cult bands. Russell's formidable vocal range, Ron's impressive keyboard skills, and their vividly witty songwriting defined their music as it changed constantly. The theatricality of 1972's A Woofer in Tweeter's Clothing and 1974's Kimono My House fit in with the glam rock scene, but by 1975's Indiscreet, Sparks were at the forefront of the power pop movement. They became electronic pop pioneers with 1979's Giorgio Moroder collaboration No. 1 in Heaven, and the synth pop of 1983's In Outer Space evolved into the house and techno underpinnings of 1994's Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins. Sparks remained adventurous in the 21st century, reworking classical music on 2002's Lil' Beethoven, penning the screenplay and music for 2021's musical Annette, and providing a timely satire on 2023's The Girl Is Crying in Her Latte.
