APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Malorie Blackman’s place as one of Britain’s most revered authors of children’s and young-adult fiction has long been secure. Endgame completes the seminal YA series the former Children’s Laureate began in 2001 with Noughts & Crosses, which introduced readers to an alternative world in which the darker-skinned Crosses oppress the lighter-skinned Noughts, and the love between that book’s protagonists—Sephy, a Cross, and Callum, a Nought—was taboo. The final instalment is a tightly plotted thriller once again told from the perspectives of multiple characters, including Sephy, her recently abducted son Troy, and her daughter Callie, a lawyer who is navigating a complex relationship with her client Tobey—the first Nought prime minister, on trial for the murder of a gang leader. The novel continues Blackman’s powerful examination of race and racism, while including many nods to contemporary politics. Fans will struggle to put it down.
