This is not a crime novel but a novel about crime, the reader will have to decide how many crimes. The writer is a prolific and admired crime writer and having read one of his books for the first time I can see why. The writing and structuring of the novel is complex and sophisticated shifting from voice to voice, perspective to perspective and decade to decade with ease. The event that provokes the whole narrative is shocking and, as the writer acknowledges, seems familiar and the unwinding is clever if a bit too pat.
