This is the first instalment of Peter May’s excellent thriller trilogy set on Hebridean outpost the Isle of Lewis. The island is where D.I. Fin Macleod grew up and he returns to investigate a gruesome murder that may have links to one of his own cases in Edinburgh. May builds Fin as a compelling character by juxtaposing his tough, present-day demeanour with flashbacks to an emotionally scarring past. Lewis is an equally powerful presence in the rich, snaking plot: its treacherous landscape holds dark secrets and provides an atmospheric backdrop for the scintillating final showdown.

While grieving over the accidental death of his only child, Fin investigates a grisly homicide nearly identical to a previous case in Edinburgh. Back in Macleod's home village of Crobost, first-person flashbacks gradually unveil contradictory episodes of horror and compassion in his youth, counterpointing the third-person account of the present-day murder case. Abundant local color much of it physically and psychologically wrenching, like the islanders' annual culling of seabirds, a primitive rite of passage matches Macleod's tormented emotional landscape. The struggles of such multidimensional characters as Artair, Macleod's boyhood friend, and Marsaili, the girl they both loved and Artair married, add depth. In the acknowledgments, May (Blowback) reveals that he drew much of his inspiration from five years filming on the island.

Having read a couple of books by Peter May, including the Chessmen, I realised that I would have to read the rest of the trilogy. Now just one more to read in this fascinating series. I had already read Coffin Road, and subsequently fallen in love with the Islands, the only other Island I’ve visited is Skye. I’m therefore looking forward to my future adventures in Scotland. My
Hooked from Chapter One
People say the synopsis on the back is the thing that makes you want to read the book, well for this book it was the image on the cover!
I’d never heard of Peter May before clasping eyes on The Blackhouse. What an author! The way May describes the landscape of Isle of Lewis is remarkable. So remarkable that I’ve completely fallen in love with the place and I haven’t even set foot on the island.
From chapter one I knew this was going to be a great read. I throughly enjoyed getting to know the character Finn and learning about his world, past and present.
The other two books in the trilogy are equally on par with this one. So much so it took me less than a week to read all three.
Highly recommend the this and any Peter May novel.
