An unexpected offer threatens the bond between Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi as the two Jedi navigate a dangerous new planet and an uncertain future.
A Jedi must be a fearless warrior, a guardian of justice, and a scholar in the ways of the Force. But perhaps a Jedi’s most essential duty is to pass on what they have learned. Master Yoda trained Dooku; Dooku trained Qui-Gon Jinn; and now Qui-Gon has a Padawan of his own. But while Qui-Gon has faced all manner of threats and danger as a Jedi, nothing has ever scared him like the thought of failing his apprentice.
Obi-Wan Kenobi has deep respect for his Master, but struggles to understand him. Why must Qui-Gon so often disregard the laws that bind the Jedi? Why is Qui-Gon drawn to ancient Jedi prophecies instead of more practical concerns? And why wasn’t Obi-Wan told that Qui-Gon is considering an invitation to join the Jedi Council—knowing it would mean the end of their partnership? The simple answer scares him: Obi-Wan has failed his Master.
When Jedi Rael Aveross, another former student of Dooku, requests their assistance with a political dispute, Jinn and Kenobi travel to the Royal Court of Pijal for what may be their final mission together. What should be a simple assignment quickly becomes clouded by deceit, and by visions of violent disaster that take hold in Qui-Gon’s mind. As Qui-Gon’s faith in prophecy grows, Obi-Wan’s faith in him is tested—just as a threat surfaces which will demand that Master and Apprentice come together as never before, or be divided forever.

Brilliantly written
Anything that sheds light on Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon Jinn’s relationship before Phantom Menace is a total sun in my book but this story gave so much more.
The tidbits of Dooku and Qui-Gon
Obi-Wan’s hatred of flying
The first apprentice of Dooku and the side characters of Pax & Rahara were all just great to read like it was a full season of a television show that actually had a decent twist
The last chapter brings a poignant tear to a Star Wars fans eye too as it sets the stage for why Obi-Wan forced himself to train Anakin and how that may have blinded his judgement.
A great read, I look forward to reading Leia now!
Claudia Gray, the hero Star Wars needs!
Another superb romp through Star Wars lore by Claudia Gray.
At first, I thought this book would feel very different to her previous novels, having focussed on Leia, or young couples in love, but her delve into the relationship between Qui Gon and Obi-Wan was just as authentic, respectable and believable as any other story Claudia has told.
With nods throughout to various films or existing Star Wars lore, this story has heart and is relevant to everything we currently know or suspected about a younger version of these two staple Star Wars characters, and once again Claudia proves that she is the hero Star Wars needs, clearly a fan of the franchise and characters through and through, and it shows in all of her excellent stories.
I couldn’t recommend this any more highly enough to any Star Wars fan!
