When 13-year-old chess prodigy Elissa Mirzoyan is abducted outside a tournament, her sheltered childhood comes to an abrupt end. In her underground prison, she meets Elijah who, close in age and IQ, she hopes will be an ally. Until he refuses to help. So begins a battle of wits on an unfair playing field. Elijah has never known anything but the Memory Wood, where Elissa is being held, while Elissa is miles from home (and quite literally manacled to the floor). It’s a tough read at times—there’s a particularly brutal wrist wound that occurs early on which is left to fester for longer than anyone would consider ideal—but even the book’s grittier scenes are beautifully told. With themes of child abduction and creepy forests, it’s perhaps best avoided before bedtime. Or your next chess tournament.

Oh dear oh dear. What a terrible book. I’m so sorry for the author who has spent months on this book. I read it in 30 mins, having realised that it was poor. Just skipped to the end to see if it got any better.
