Plot Summary
What is anti-Semitism today, two generations after the Holocaust? In his continuing exploration of modern Israeli life, director Yoav Shamir (Checkpoint, 5 Days, Flipping Out) travels the world in search of the most modern manifestations of the "oldest hatred", and comes up with some startling answers. In this irreverent quest, he follows American Jewish leaders to the capitals of Europe, as they warn government officials of the growing threat of anti-Semitism, and he tacks on to a class of Israeli high school students on a pilgrimage to Auschwitz. On his way, Shamir meets controversial historian, Norman Finkelstein, who offers his unpopular views on the manner that anti-Semitism is being used by the Jewish community and especially Israel for political gain. He also joins scholars, Stephen M. Walt and John J. Mearsheimer, while they give a lecture in Israel following the release of their book "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy", about the un-proportional influence the Israel lobby in Washington enjoys. Yoav visits Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem, the must stop for all world leaders on their visits to Israel. While in Jerusalem, he drops by the house of his grandmother that offers her insight on the issue and declares that she is the "real Jew". The film questions our perceptions and terminology when an event proclaimed by some as anti-Semitic is described by others as legitimate criticism of Israel’s government policies. The film walks along the boundary between anti-Zionism, rejecting the notion of a Jewish State, and anti-Semitism, rejecting Jews. Is the former being used to excuse the latter? And is there a difference between today's anti-Semitism and plain old racism that is affecting all minorities? Opinions often differ and tempers sometimes flare, but in Defamation we find that one thing is certain - only by understanding their response to anti-Semitism can we really appreciate how Jews today, and especially modern Israelis, respond to the world around them, in New York and in Moscow, in Gaza and Tel Aviv.

A Honest Film About Isreal and Anit sematim - and the meaning of both
I was surprised how completely balanced and honest this documentary was. It gave an understanding of the ADL and then Finkelstein and others on the other 'side'.
Not only a documentary about what happened after the 2nd world war to people who lived through that, but from people who are third generation. It shows how the normal person can be pushed in two directions on what the future of isreal is, and how anti semanism has relevency to isreal or not, and how people on both sides have agendas and goals with the commentary and actions they make.
It left me understanding that people are people, they have perspectives on things, and they shape the past and the present to fit there motivations. In there minds it is for the right cause.
My personal concern, having a jewish father, although im not a practising jew, is that I have never been treated badly or had any anti semanism in my life just like those jewish people in newyork, and im from london england. I worry for those children who tored aushthiz (sp?) as in many ways I saw propaganda inserted into there minds, and that is worrying.
I understand that people remember the past of course, but to use it as a reason to cause more pain in people remembering and using that as a wepeon of pshchological attack is unfair.
'
Ultimately love is the answer, not more rememberance and excuses to create pain. Organisations like the adl concern me, as it seems to be a place of remembering and causing pain.
Moving forward, and helping fellow humans in the world is the only color/culture/creed etc - as we are all one. One Love :-)
hard hitting
shocking and brilliant, this documentary does not shy away from asking the hard questions. It is a film that should be watched by everyone and watched with an open mind. Please do not go in to it with presumptions about the subject matter just hear what the people have to say and watch their attitudes.
Good movie
Taken by an amateur, it was a nice watch.
