Plot Summary
J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg join forces in this extraordinary tale of youth, mystery and adventure. Super 8 tells the story of six friends who witness a train wreck while making a super 8 movie, only to learn that something unimaginable escaped during the crash. It will put a spell on you." – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone.

Super 8
When i first watched the teaser trailer for Super 8, (showing a white pick up truck crash into the train causing it to derail), many months ago, i knew that this film will be a must see film. And then after seeing the actual trailer, with the car rotating in mid-air, i was expecting great things from this film and that is what i experienced. J.J. Abrams has created another outstanding alien flick, but whereas Cloverfield was mainly horror, this is part coming-of-age drama, part sci-fi, part mystery thriller. The best way i can describe Super 8 is a combination of Cloverfield, E.T. and Stand By Me.
The acting is amazing, even from the young cast of unknown actors and actresses. The storyline flows nicely and is perfectly paced. The special and visual effects could not have been any better, the rotating car in mid-air and the train crash are some of the best in the film. And similar to Cloverfield, the alien creature is not fully revealed until the last few minutes of the film. Super 8 is one of the stand-out films of the year, and it is an amazing film to watch. I could easily watch this film again and again, which is something i rarely can do with a film. If you haven't seen it yet, you must.
It starts out great...
...but then proceeds to tell and wrap up it's story in the LEAST imaginative way possible. When you think about it, the actions of the kids actually affects the outcome of the story not one iota. The subplot involving the fathers and their conflict also comes to nothing at all and everything that happens would have happened anyway if all the kids had stayed home in bed.
One of the great disapointments of 2011, the people raving about this need to go back and re-watch those old Spielbergs, because this is a VERY pale imitation of them.
Great homage to the 80
Wonderfully nostalgic. Feels like goonies, ET, Jaws, Explorers. Scary , exciting and charming, everything a good Spielberg film was. I also liked the little details, warm specs of dust in the window light. Could almost smell the model paint as it reminded me of when i was a kid model making and making home videos with my friends. Its a great little family film harking back to a time when family films were not so… 'stupid'.
I'll be adding this to my collection as soon as its available in HD.
