Plot Summary

The star of LEON, RONIN and 22 BULLETS is back with brute force in this explosive action-thriller, THE DEAD LIST. JEAN RENO delivers an outstanding performance as Milo, a ruthless killer and patriarch of a violent criminal underworld in a film that is set to ignite its genre and become an instant classic. Keeping his friends close and his enemies closer, Milo rules his clan with an iron fist and makes no mistakes, executing grand heists with impenetrable precision. Those who dare to question him quickly meet a violent end. But things are about to change when his son and heir’s loyalty is called into question. With enemies circling and special agents closing in, Milo must pick his battles, between the son he loves and the men who want him dead.

Fantastic

What a great film. Really well paced with a good mix of action vs background story. The heist scenes are brilliantly choreographed and very realistic.

The original French soundtrack is fairly sparse in terms of dialogue for a film with such depth to its narrative; so I'd guess that the script has lost a certain something in translation - it does feel a bit, well 'basic' in places. However this won't spoil the film as the brooding mood is portrayed by what isn't said - Which is always the mark of a great script in my experience; so this review tries to look past what could be as simple as an unsophisticated translation. I only wish I understood French so I could enjoy the work as it was meant to be seen originally.

Highly recommended

would not watch again, just cheap and cheerful

Its a decent enough film. one that would be watched and easilly forgotten. 99p worth watching for that price.

A bog-standard French action-crime with some thrills and plenty of would-be atomspherics

Worth 99p. Maybe worth more… up to, say, £2.99?

it's a well-executed French crime-gangster-family-action film with Jean Reno (who could do this part standing on his head!).

it doesn't have the pace and pzazz of many recent French action films. Neither does it have the twists and turns.

It does have a fairly measured pace, some lovely atmospheric, loitering shots of the south of France countryside, a handful of neat set pieces, and - it has to be said - the villains have a certain rough charm about them (they are not Monsters!).

We've probably seen all the ingredients before… but, like a favourite pair of trainers, it's nice to put your feet in something that won't crinkle your toes too much.. and have a quick jog around the block…

The subtitles are fairly accurate - and it's a nice chance to practice listening to some steady, well-delivered (if somewhat sparse) French.

A nice TV meal. No indigestion either.
