Plot Summary
Naomi Klein's controversial best-selling book which explores how both natural and man-made disasters are used to force disadvantageous political and economic changes on unwilling governments is brought to the screen in this documentary from filmmakers Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross. Using electroshock treatment as a metaphor -- a harsh jolt to the body and brain that, after being embraced as a healing method, was in turn discovered to cause more harm than good. THE SHOCK DOCTRINE explores how the United States, with the help of the C.I.A., became enamoured of Milton Friedman's interpretation of free-market capitalism and attempted to persuade developing nations of its value. However, since fully unregulated markets tended to create an unbalanced economic climate in which a small number of people became extremely wealthy and vast numbers were plunged into poverty, the United States was only successful at selling free market deregulation to countries in crisis who had no practical choice than to do what the wealthiest and most powerful nation on Earth demanded. The results led to both widespread privation and violence in Russia, Poland, Chile, South Africa and the Middle East, and THE SHOCK DOCTRINE explains how this happened, where it's still going on, and what can be done to stop it.

Very simply the truth
A powerful, well crafted presentation of the unwise direction taken and terrorism carried out by the Freidman/USA/thatcher axis. What i find interesting and what is not explored is the psychology behind this drive and the almost child like obsession with accumulating pointless wealth. What was Freidman's motive given he was obviously aware of the terror and duplicity he was advocating. The shock doctrine and USA mission statement is almost schizophrenic given the imposing terror required to create it. Given the percentage of functional psychopaths known to make up the population distribution curve in all sectors of society it would be enlightening to see psychometric analysis on such economists. Hopefully Naomi Klein is right in saying "we are becoming immune to shock doctrine"....
Read the book.
This is a good film, but it is telling that before its release Naomi Klien distanced herself from it citing that not enough clips were being used to verify claims and eventually splitting from the production team over "irreconcilable differences".
The book gets five stars. Its not that the film is not as good, but there is only so much you can fit into 80 mins... so you can see the authors point.
