Triangle
After the recent spat of dismal and dreary horror releases, Triangle is the only film so far this year that has been any good. It is a unique british horror with a clever, creepy and intriguing plot, but like Edeegan stated in his\her review, i was slightly disappointed in the outcome of the film.
The film doesn't take that long to get into, after the boat capsizes and the ship appears, then it starts to get going properly. The twists in the film are good, but can get repetitive and less of a shock after the characters tell you what is going to happen. The lead actress Melissa George, gave a brilliant performance and kept the film intense and creepy.
It is not a scary horror like the trailer leads you to believe, but it is intense and fascinating. One of the only let downs i have on the film is the ending, which is what i found the most disappointing about the film, but i will not go any further incase i spoil the film for anyone. It is not the greatest horror film i have seen, but it is a good entertaining watch if you like your clever horrors, and for a british horror it is good.
You should be disappointed
This film looks to have had a lot of potential, but in my opinion it has failed miserably to fulfil it. I really cannot understand how any thinking viewer can rate this highly. It's entertaining in that the sets are good and the events unfold in an interesting fashion but it has some catastrophic flaws that leave it floundering.
Firstly, the main character evokes little nor no sympathy - she's an annoying, vacant individual who acts in an utterly contrived manner which doesn't stand any scrutiny. From the point at which events start to take off, her actions are inexplicable and counter-intuitive. I cannot think of anyone who would act as she does (I'm trying not to give any plot away, or I would go into specifics). If you watch this you will find yourself thinking "huh?! Why didn't she..." as the on-screen character repeatedly acts in a completely bizarre manner which serves only to fit the awkward aspirations of the director.
Secondly there is no context. This is a film which is trying desperately to be clever but fails miserably. The blatant formulaic nature of the plot is predictable from mid-way through and the last 45 minutes especially are a complete waste of time, serving only to further alienate the thinking viewer from the main character.
As I said, it had potential, but it has all the hallmarks of something badly thought out, unfinished and awkwardly filmed.
I have no idea why anyone would give this 5 stars. It's not even worth renting. A pity, because had it been done better it *could* have been a really good film. In reality however, it really isn't. Don't watch it, is my advice. You won't miss anything. The tagline in the description says "and Jess unknowingly holds the key to end the terror". This is absolute rubbish, she has no idea how to end the terror and even if she did the film gives no indication of how she would do that. Someone should make it illegal to append such gibberish to films whether they are good or bad.
In short, this film is an insult to your intelligence.
Not what you'd expect
This is a truly original movie. Don't expect a slasher/horror movie, but more of an existential experiment. This film will stay with you long after the credits roll and demands repeat viewings. not to be missed
