Plot Summary
Early in 2011, U2 returned to Hansa Studio in Berlin to discuss the making of Achtung Baby. From The Sky Down, is a new documentary film directed by Academy Award winning director Davis Guggenheim (It Might Get Loud, Waiting for Superman, An Inconvenient Truth). Twenty years after the release of U2’s Achtung Baby (1991), Davis Guggenheim charts the path toward this groundbreaking album. Guggenheim uses animation and unseen footage from Berlin and Dublin alongside conversation to reveal what is now a key chapter in U2’s career. “In the terrain of rock bands - implosion or explosion is seemingly inevitable. U2 has defied the gravitational pull towards destruction… this band has endured and thrived. From The Sky Down asks the question why.” Davis Guggenheim
Customer Reviews
From the sky dowm
This film made me remember just how much I loved about U2 in the earlier years (War , Unforgettable Fire...). And also at the same time how quite pompous and serious it all got to around 'Rattle and Hum'.
The film sees U2 admitting this too and how refreshing that is to hear in this day and age.The turning point being the making of ' Achtung Baby' how they totally turned the way they made their music upside down and how they all wanted to make it work and sound different to anything they'd done before.
I absolutely loved this sentimental journey from start to finish and made me fall back in love with them.
"The sound of four men chopping down the Joshua Tree" - Bono
I remember buying Achtung Baby in 1991 and putting the cassette tape in my Sony Walkman, and thinking "What the .... is this". By the end of the week I was hooked and couldn't listen to anything else. Twenty years later it's one of my favourite albums of all time, and is one of the most defining albums in rock history in my view. This film charts the bands transition from having doubts about their direction to the breakthrough that is One, and their consequent musical reinvention. Music needs to evolve to stay relevant and U2 is one of the greatest bands in history for that sole reason.
"Suddenly something very powerful is happening in the room"
There is a magical moment just under the hour mark where we bear witness to the very organic inception of what was to become U2’s signature song. That moment alone is worth the admission price.
