'70s One-Hit Wonders 2

If you're going to have only one hit, it had better be good, and our '70s One-Hit Wonders 2 Essentials contains some biggies. London punks the Ruts threw petrol on the smouldering anxieties of 1979 with "Babylon's Burning" and blazed into the Top Ten for the first and only time; John Denver took "Annie's Song" all the way to the top in 1974, so it was fitting he had composed the tune on a ski-lift; and Emerson, Lake & Palmer re-interpreted Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" in a prog style to stunning effect in 1977.

Being a one-hit wonder doesn't mean you can't have a long, distinguished career. Legendary pub-rock outfit Dr. Feelgood are still out on the road deep into the '00s, sadly without frontman Lee Brilleaux (R.I.P. 1994) who lent considerable menace to the ever-intoxicating "Milk and Alcohol"; and Boston is a bona fide global rock supergroup, with sales of over 50 million albums worldwide, so it's kind of weird that their highest single in the U.K. charts was "More Than a Feeling" (Number 22 in 1976). The Motors, however, never did that much after 1978's magnificent "Airport" and disbanded in 1982. The Dickies join Can and Errol Dunkley among the ranks of our Deep Cuts.

Where else but Essentials will you find an entire decade's worth of wide-ranging, far-flung one-hit wonders? Where else but Deep Cuts can you experience the Dickies, punking up the theme tune to The Banana Splits TV show, alongside the mellow reggae of Errol Dunkley — singalong, now, "O.K. Fred, now you're a yagga-yagga, I wanna be one too" — or even the pack-leading krautrock of Can whose only foray into hit territory in the U.K., "I Want More", was introduced by Noel Edmonds on Top of the Pops (1976) with the line "I wonder if Can will get into the Top Tin!"?

When a decade is so rich, so full-to-bursting with one-hit wonders, one iTunes Essentials playlist is just not enough. Cue the fanfare — it's '70s One-Hit Wonders 2! Gone from the charts, but by no means forgotten, our one-hit wonders are wonderful indeed, be they hot rock nuggets (Argent's "Hold Your Head Up"), glittering dance-pop bubbles (the Ritchie Family's "The Best Disco In Town"), or novelty hits (Driver 67's "Car 67"; "Floral Dance" by the Brighouse & Rastrick Band).
