'90s One-Hit Wonders

They're here today and gone tomorrow . . . but how do you define an entire decade with one song? These one-hit wonders unintentionally did just that, from the lounge-hoax "Wonderwall" by the Mike Flowers Pops, who managed to convince some listeners that they pre-dated Oasis, to Billy Ray Cyrus' line-dancing anthem "Achy Breaky Heart".

No one-hit-wonder playlist would be complete without a couple of standout novelty tracks, and we've got them here in the shape of Chef from South Park's "Chocolate Salty Balls (P.S. I Love You)" and Los Del Rio's clever, trancy reinvention of the "Macarena". Rednex pioneered hillbilly techno with the ultra-bouncy "Cotton Eye Joe". The flipside of the decade's squeaky-clean girl-power movement was represented by Shampoo, who looked like they didn't wash.

Quentin Tarantino revolutionized popular cinema in the '90s, peppering his movies with immaculately chosen songs: Urge Overkill's "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon", from 1994's Pulp Fiction, was one of them.

Each era has its one-hit-wonder artists in every style of music: they come out of nowhere with one fantastic classic and own the airwaves for the requisite few minutes, before promptly receding to a dark corner of obscurity. The '90s was no exception, as you'll recall with these flashes of momentary pop glory. Babylon Zoo's "Space Man", Cornershop's "Brimful of Asha", the Dandy Warhols' "Bohemian Like You" . . . all excellent tracks that lit up the charts and fully deserve our fanfare.
