    • 1. "Grace Under Pressure" by Elbow: "I first heard this in a shop in L.A. many years ago and spent the next year or so trying to find out who wrote it. An absolute masterpiece of songwriting, so simple and yet so huge."
    • 2. "Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Album Version)" by Neil Young: "Getting into Neil Young was a big thing for me; it really changed my taste in music and made me look for simplicity and perfection over sophistry. This song is simple and beautiful."
    • 3. "Thunder Road" by Bruce Springsteen: "This may, in my opinion, be the most perfect set of lyrics yet committed to tape. The imagery, the hope, the desperation — it all builds perfectly into one of the greatest lines of all time. Magic."
    • 4. "The Weight" by The Band: "I think these guys are underrated by history, due to their close association with Dylan. For my money, Robbie Robertson is as good a songwriter when he's at his best, which he is here."
    • 5. "There She Goes, My Beautiful World (Edit)" by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: "When I first heard this song and listened to the lyrics, I was genuinely welling up. It's the most perfect portrait of the business of trying to be creative. Nick Cave is a god, in my eyes."
    • 6. "Build Me Up Buttercup" by The Foundations: "I recorded a cover of this recently. I often forget how awesome the Motown stuff was. From a musical point of view, the songwriting is so insanely tight and so perfect; it's kind of humbling."
    • 7. "Weak Become Heroes" by The Streets: "Mike Skinner is the poet for our times, in England for sure. The first Streets album is a classic; the imagery is so spot-on, so arresting, so true. This is a beautiful portrait of a scene that's long gone."
    • 8. "Yeah Sapphire" by The Hold Steady: "Craig Finn is one of my favourite lyricists. This song is a heart-rending story of one of those relationships that you can never quite figure out. They're also a great old-school rock ’n’ roll band."
    • 9. "In My Time of Need" by Ryan Adams: "This is my favourite love song. It's so basic in its imagery and melody; I love it. I'd like to get married to this someday."
    • 10. "One Way" by The Levellers: "The classic festival anthem from probably my favourite English band. I got to tour with them last year, and it was an absolute pleasure. I defy anyone not to sing along with this."
    • 11. "Fix Me" by Black Flag: "This is the definitive hardcore punk band, and this is my favourite song by them. There's more menace and attitude in this song, in under one minute, than most metal bands fit into their entire careers."
    • 12. "Milkmaid" by Kid Harpoon: "Tom is an old friend, and this is one of his finest songs, for my money. A lovely story told beautifully."
    • 13. "Question Marks?" by Ben Marwood: "Townes is one of the great lost songwriters. He was so messed up he never really took his music as far as he could, but when he was on form, he was unbeatable. His poetry is exquisite."
    • 14. "Marianne" by Tori Amos: "My sister got me into Tori many years ago, and I'm still a diehard fan. Her music is surprisingly subtle and complex, and her voice is so perfect, fragile and sexy."
    • 15. "Broken By the Wheel" by Crazy Arm: "Xtra Mile's new signings. When I heard this song on the office stereo I was blown away."
    • 16. "Joga" by Björk: "I'm obsessed with Björk. She's mesmerising, so original and so melodic."
