What the hell is Joy Division doing here?

There's some great tracks here - many of which I haven't heard for years - but what on earth is Joy Division's Disorder doing here?

There are some other strange inclusions. Is PJ Harvey goth? Is Iggy Pop?

And, ok, I guess we can't quibble with the Birthday Party... but Weeping Song-era NIck Cave?

Still, glad to see that someone's remember Lagartija Nick - which should be as well-known as Bela Lugosi's Dead.

Leaving aside the genre quiblings, it's not a bad intoduction....

It's not all original 80s deathrock goth, there still a lot of Marilyn Manson, HIM and Type O Negative that fall more into the goth metal spectrum than straight up goth rock, which is fine, but one thing for the inner purist in me to get irritated by. But other wise a nice intro to the goth subgenre.

Average

Firstly - if you are a die hard Goth most of this you will already have....and there's too many non Goth bands in there - Psychedelic Furs, The Chameleons for a start.

Secondly it misses some of the key Goth anthems from the 80's such as the Sisters of Mercy's Alice or Floorshow, The Missions Serpents Kiss, The Neph's Preacher Man and there's no Ghost Dance, Skeletal Family, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Salvation, Play Dead, Balaam and the Angel or Rose of Avalanche.
