The classically trained Joan Wasser (who was once part of the Boston University Symphony Orchestra) has played freelance violin for the likes of Sheryl Crow and Rufus Wainwright, but it's her work under the moniker Joan As Police Woman that interests us here. Formed in New York as a trio in 2002 after Wasser's stints with Antony and the Johnsons and Black Beetle, Joan As Police Woman debuted with 2004's eponymous EP, a vital, out-there blend of soul and experimental rock ("punk R&B", if you like) that would be developed through first album Real Life (2006) — featuring the faster-than-usual "Christobel" — and 2008's To Survive, which has Rufus Wainwright and David Sylvian in guest slots and contains the reflective classic "To Be Lonely".
