Movie Songs Vol. 2

Our second collection of classic movie songs spans the life of Hollywood, from the golden musical era of Fred Astaire ("Let's Face the Music and Dance") through the glory years of Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music) to the stardom of Elvis in Blue Hawaii, all the way to today's Badly Drawn Boy (About a Boy).

The '50s loom large in our playlist: that was arguably the last golden decade of the movie song, because the stars back then were prone to burst into song at any given moment. So we've got Frank Sinatra singing "High Hopes" with a bunch of kids in 1959's A Hole in the Head and, from the same year, Doris Day doing "Pillow Talk".

It all goes eclectic in the collectors' section of the playlist, with John Barry's instrumental version of "We Have All the Time in the World" from the Bond flick On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and "Minstrel Boy" by ex-Clash hero Joe Strummer (& the Mescaleros) from Ridley Scott's Somalian conflict movie, Black Hawk Down.

Most of the songs in our second all-time classic movie playlist have that in-built sing-along quality that made them so memorable in the first place. Try a couple of choruses from Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing" (The Full Monty) or Monty Python's "Always Look On the Bright Side of Life" (The Life of Brian), and you'll be smiling for hours afterwards. If you've got a sore throat, you can always dust off the air guitar for Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" from Easy Rider.
