  • The Basics

Ask diehard My Morning Jacket fans (and the numbers are growing by the hour) to name the group's core tracks, and listen as the same titles are mentioned again and again: the muscular ska-rock of "Off the Record", the thundering rock 'n' roll of "One Big Holiday", the no-frills honesty of "I Will Be There When You Die" — these are the Basics that leave us breathless 'til the house lights come on. Check out some of band's EP work, in Next Steps.

  • Next Steps

Few bands utilize the LP's potential quite like My Morning Jacket, whose albums rarely shy from an epic minute-count. And when the group's not filling those vast spaces with choice cuts ("Evelyn Is Not Real"), their seemingly bottomless songwriting well spills over to in-between EPs, like the brilliant Heartbreakin Man and Acoustic Citsuoca (featuring "The Bear"). Even the demos shimmer, as you'll discover in Deep Cuts.

  • Deep Cuts

For real M.M.J. fans (and yes, that's what we call the group), Deep Cuts is where the fun really begins — where we roll up our sleeves and (strongly) suggest tracks we know you're going to love. Tracks like the group's hypnotic take on Cass Elliot's "Dream a Lil Dream of Me", the full nine-minutes-plus of "I Will Sing You Songs", and the rough but radiant demo of "Butch Cassidy".

"America is a lot closer to getting its own Radiohead, and it isn't Wilco," wrote Rolling Stone. "My Morning Jacket, from Louisville, Kentucky, have been on the road to their OK Computer for a while." We couldn't agree more. Thanks in part to the songwriting genius of hirsute frontman Jim James, the five-piece uses the hauntingly beautiful Americana of Neil Young merely as a launching pad to something greater — an endlessly imaginative soundscape spanning funk and power pop.

Missing songs

There are some amazing MMJ songs that aren't on this list of "essential" tracks, for example, Wordless Chorus, Touch Me I'm Going To Scream, Pt.2 and Remnants, just to name a few. If there is going to be a compilation of essential My Morning Jacket, it definitely needs to include those 3. A lot of the chosen songs are, of course, fantastic, but so many greats are missing.
Oh, and Run Thru? Why is that not up there?
