Some songs have such a relaxing, carefree vibe that it's impossible to listen to them and not imagine clear blue skies and warm seas. The Young Rascals' "Groovin'" — here covered by former Squeeze member and Smiths session player Paul Carrack — is one of them, and so is "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers. The beach is perhaps best enjoyed horizontally, on a large towel, but German dance outfit York take an alternative approach — by transforming Chris Rea's "On the Beach"; with extra bpm and a blast of electronic euphoria, the kingdom of sand becomes the principality of rave. The Bloodhound Gang makes its nocturnal shoreline plans abundantly clear, while All About Eve gives the setting a mythical dimension with talk of ocean waves and galley slaves on "Martha's Harbour".
