  • The Basics

Conceived as something of a hoax in the late-'80s by keyboard and guitar prodigy Steven Wilson – mainly to showcase his talent and affection for experimental rock – Porcupine Tree gradually took on a life of its own, and stands proud as one of the sharpest, most inventive rock outfits of the 21st Century, drawing comparisons to Yes and Pink Floyd while forging ahead in bold, fresh directions. Raise the curtain with the title track from 2007 concept album Fear of a Blank Planet. Sample the band's faux-throwback beginnings, in Next Steps.

  • Next Steps

The genesis of Porcupine Tree's 1991 debut, On the Sunday of Life, combined pranksterism, irony, and homage: the album is an assemblage of tracks purporting to be the band's "lost recordings", and there's a big clue to mastermind Steven Wilson's cheeky subterfuge in the sound and title of "The Nostalgia Factory". Up the Downstair (1993), featuring "Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape", marked his transition into grand, psychedelic, prog-inspired rock. Wilson's side projects are scattered among our PT Deep Cuts.

  • Deep Cuts

After signing to Snapper/K-Scope in 1998, the band put out one of its most accessible albums, Stupid Dream, and then greeted the new century with the often intense Lightbulb Sun — here we've included a live version of the title track, recorded in Poland, 2001. There's also a selection of cuts from side projects Blackfield (a collaboration between Wilson and Israeli rocker Aviv Geffen) and No-Man (a fusion fan's dream band, based round Wilson and Tim Bowness).

Porcupine Tree was originally a one-man retro-experiment overseen by singer/guitarist Steven Wilson, but as the early material started to attract a solid following, a bona fide band was required to fulfil Wilson's ambitions — guest bassist Colin Edwin and session keyboard player Richard Barbieri (ex-Japan) would make a permanent return to form the core of the current five-strong lineup. Over the past two decades, Porcupine Tree has separated itself from the scrum of prog revivalists through a blend of stunning musicianship, smart thematic concepts, awe-inspiring live shows and critically praised production flair.

Best British Prog Band

This band should not be underestimated. They are on of the few prog bands that can appeal to a wide audience whether you like rock, metal or experimental music. Recommended tracks are "Trains" and "Time Flies"
