The new internet wave is now truly upon us and it's all about "oldies" like us . . . in the most graceful and musically refined sense of the word. What's more, the collective phrase "silver surfers" sounds so much more dynamic than baby boomers, right? So here's a playlist for everyone who's done his or her part to reclaim cyberspace from the hands of green and hopelessly callow youth. Louis Armstrong announces our arrival with "What a Wonderful World", Dean Martin pours nostalgia into a Martini glass with "Memories Are Made of This", Vera Lynn sings the ultimate song of love and hope "We'll Meet Again", and Nat "King" Cole gives us the last word in vocal elegance, "Smile".

As a silver surfer raised on bottles of stout and post-war seaside holidays, you'll no doubt remember that golden era when homegrown rock 'n' roll produced idols like Billy Fury (born Ronald Wycherley), who scored a hit in 1961 with "Halfway to Paradise", and evergreen Cliff Richard (born Harry Webb) who topped the charts the following year with the title track from The Young Ones. Ilford's very own Blonde bombshell, Kathy Kirby, belted out an upbeat version of Doris Day's "Secret Love" in 1963, and went on to represent the UK in the Eurovision song contest, while Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass soundtracked many a '70s cocktail party with "Spanish Flea". Peters & Lee and Demis Roussos are no longer lost in the mists of time, as you'll hear in Deep Cuts.

It takes a certain calibre of contemporary artist to make the grade for inclusion among our Silver Surfers Essentials, but the late-blooming Susan Boyle passes with flying colours, thanks to her phenomenal rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream". She stands proud in company with Demis Roussos, whose mid-'70s chart-topper "Forever and Ever" captured the romance of a thousand-and-one Shirley Valentine-style Greek holidays, Peters & Lee ("Welcome Home"), who (like Susan Boyle) won a talent contest — Opportunity Knocks — before ascending the showbiz ladder, and Morecambe & Wise, with their beloved signature tune, "Bring Me Sunshine".
