Six LPs and one incendiary live album have more than earned the Roots their reputation as hip-hop's only true "rock band". Outside of a few hard-hop cuts — "The Seed (2.0)", "Rock You" — it's an aesthetic rather than a creative direction, though. Roots compositions still brim with samples, only they're looped live with instruments. And they still have turntable trickery — scratched with the tongue and teeth of a guy named Scratch. This is the sound of a rulebook being rewritten.
