Legend has it that a 1988 Stone Roses gig in Manchester was the inspiration for Liam Gallagher to become a rock star, but this truly great northern rock band's influence extends much further than the birth of Oasis — despite the fact that they left us with only two albums and a clutch of singles. Visually (album artwork, guitar paint jobs) there was more than a hint of Jackson Pollock about the Stone Roses, who exercised their own creative powers at the intersection of rave culture and rock. The Stone Roses drew on the Byrds, Second Coming doffed a cap to Led Zep, but there was no denying either the singular genius of guitarist John Squire, or the charisma of frontman Ian Brown.

This essentials is a joke
Only six songs! WTF iTunes? The whole first album is essential. Songs like Driving South are essential as they tell of the relationship between John Squire and Ian Brown. And I love the Mint Royale remix of Elephant Stone, but is is more essential than the original - no. Take this iTunes Essential away, have a little think about it, and bring it back with at least 15 more songs.
