Clydebank's kings of blue-eyed soul struck like lightning in 1987 with debut single "Wishing I Was Lucky" and, for a decade, it was uphill from there. Fronted by Marti Pellow, a working-class hero with pin-up looks and a voice that came from somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon line, Wet Wet Wet had the pop charts at their mercy — most notably with the #1 hit that refused to die, "Love Is All Around". We've squeezed two decades' of the Wets' soulful pop here — The Memphis Sessions, recorded prior to the band's debut but shelved until the big-time kicked in, ultimately saw the light of day in 1988 and contains the fireside ballad "This Time", a great showcase for the masterful pacing of Marti Pellow's slower-tempo vocal skills; and the production on "New Age Sacrifice", from 2007's comeback Timeless, is nothing short of exquisite. Here we've pulled in the Wets' loose ends: "Cold Cold Heart" was recorded as a special original to feature among the well-known tracks of the band's first greatest-hits collection, End of Part One; "Get Ready" (recorded under the pseudonym Maggie Pie and the Imposters) appears on 1992's Cloak & Dagger; and "I've Been Around the World" is a standout cut on Pellow's solo debut, Smile, recorded after he kicked a heroin addiction.

You just can't keep a good band down — especially a band of Scots troopers like the Wets, who have weathered personal storms and royalty spats to return, 20 years after their Popped in Souled Out debut, to the soul-crossover shelf in pop's endlessly restocked supermarket. Hard though it may be, it's probably best to look beyond their global smash from the Four Weddings and a Funeral soundtrack (which even got on the band's nerves after 15 weeks at the top) to the superb quality found among their less gargantuan singles and album tracks.
