Grime boss and Dizzee Rascal cohort Wiley — born Richard Kylea Cowie — has chosen to label his musical style Eski (derived from "eskimo"), and he likes to play lyrically with variations on a cold theme — his 2004 debut is titled Treddin' On Thin Ice) — but there's more than enough heat in these introductory Essentials to set light to the most frigid of dance floors. Chart the pioneering and prolific MC's journey from the garage-crunchin' "Wot Do U Call It?", through the cascading, thunk-punctuated "50/50" from 2007's Playtime Is Over, to breakout track "Wearing My Rolex" and the surprisingly funky, bass-driven "Turn It Up", a highlight from his most commercial release to date, See Clear Now (2008). Wherever grime goes from here, Wiley will no doubt have his hands on the wheel.
