20 Minute Longbox 1.23 - The Sandman #58 | The 20 Minute Longbox belatedly returns after a period of illness to take a look at one of the most popular and highly received series ever. It launched an entire imprint and its legacy is legaciclical (that may not be a word). It's The Sandman, and we're looking at issue #58 from the Kindly Ones arc. We also stop off to take a brief look at Doctor Who Magazine's 8th Doctor comics that I have spent the last month reading. To return the show to its regular posting, I'll be double-shipping over the next couple of weeks, meaning that next week's episode will coincide with the release of the next Fantasticast. The Marvel Moratorium is in full effect, and we have four episodes free of Marvel to redress the balance. We're starting with Batman: Streets Of Gotham #3, one of Paul Dini's new titles that launched in the wake of the Battle For The Cowl, with art by Dustin Nguyen. The main story is supplemented by a Manhunter backup strip by Marc Andreyko and Georges Jeanty. But it turns out I hadn't been paying these lovely chaps at libsyn any money and they wouldn't let me do very much until I paid them! But the show is here, looking at the famous team-up of Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley on the New Avengers spin-off title, Mighty Avengers. Secret Invasion is looming large, Tony Stark is skrull-paranoid, and Bob Reynolds has just met himself. Oh, and they've been flung back in time as well. The audio quality for most of the episode is lower than usual. After last week's special diversion, we return with a look at 1988's Wolverin #3, written by Chris Claremont and with art by John Buscema. I recorded this after breakfast this morning, and as a result, I sound like a flu virus beat me up. Listen out for the bit where the audio was so bad I had to re-record and I sound like an entirely different person. I challenged myself to produce the entire episode by 10pm this evening, at the time of writing a mere 24 minutes away. It's been great fun, reading the issue, writing about it, recording the show, editing it to within an inch of its life, panicking about the trailer being too long, rendering it, writing this post, and in a few minutes, publishing the show.
