Podcast Description
The history of Celtic Football Club is littered with tales and ballads in either celebration or mourning of the highs and lows, triumphs and tragedies, successes and failures of a hundred and twenty-plus years of roller-coaster competition. No club has a richer cultural heritage of fact, fantasy, myth and legend, of poetry, song and story than the famous Glasgow Celtic. Arguably the highest high of all was the unprecedented season of 1966/67, the glorious so-called “Season in the Sun”, which culminated in that euphoric day in Lisbon when ‘The Celtic’ conquered the very peak of European club football by defeating Inter Milan 2-1 to become European Champions at first time of asking. This podcast is a compilation of spoken highlights of that and other memorable moments in Celtic history, which are guaranteed to warm the heart of any Celtic-minded soul.

CleanMoonlight Over Paradise – Neil Lennon Tribute | Neil Lennon graduated with honours as Celtic manager at Rugby Park last Saturday, when his exciting young squad shook off its recent lethargy to romp to its first SPL title under his stewardship. As he himself said, he can now walk shoulder-to-shoulder with earlier managerial icons, rather than in their giant shadows. On the night of the historic day he was officially appointed Celtic manager, 9th June 2010, the proud Lurgan Bhoy took himself quietly away from the draining negotiations that had dragged on into darkness. He wanted some time to himself to get some fresh air and reflect on the enormity of what had just happened to him – and where better to do that than in the silent solitude of the vast, empty bowl of his spiritual football home, Celtic Park? Alone in that theatre of dreams, that towering monument to Walfrid … the founding fathers of his club … and generations of others like himself, Lennon was struck and moved by the stillness and the awesome atmosphere, as shafts of moonlight angled across the stands, starkly illuminating the space and the stage that had showcased Celtic legends for 118 glorious years at that time. It truly was, “Moonlight Over Paradise”; and in Lenny’s own words, the haunting vision, “… took his breath away – he’d never seen the old place look that way.” Suspended in time, that magical moment seemed to him, somehow, to stir the ghosts of history in Celtic Park. Clearly taking inspiration from that strangely emotional and rather eerie experience, Neil has since led his beloved Celtic to victory in the 2011 Scottish Cup and to an astonishing comeback to claim a first league championship as Celtic manager, despite horrendous off-field pressures that would have daunted lesser men. Reading contemporary press reports of the then new Celtic manager’s moving account of the above episode prompted the following monologue/song (our hundredth post), reproduced here in acoustic demo form to honour, early doors, a Celtic manager who has come of age – and to celebrate a truly astounding 2011/12 SPL triumph. Watch out for the full-blown studio version in the near future. THERE’S ONLY ONE NEIL LENNON! Johnbhoy | 10 4 12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanPMB … QC … RIP (Our Tribute to the late Paul McBride, QC) | A few respectful words on the passing of a good friend … a good friend to Celtic … to the Celtic manager … and to all the Celtic-minded. Johnbhoy “PMB … QC … RIP” (A Tribute to Paul McBride) Forthright; fearless; peerless … no back seat for him - and none for us. Flamboyant boldness … steadfast under fire - cool, calm, no fuss. Unfazed; remorseless … intellect supreme - a man you’d trust. Stout friend; feared foe … no caped sub on the bench - go on we must. Our voice; his choice … The Law undone - a force of nature hushed. So, laud; applaud … but be he not in vain - move up the bus! Copyright © 25thMay1967, March 2012 | 6 3 12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanThat Hearse … | A few words of explanation for any apparent dearth of sympathy. That Hearse … (A Litany of Grievance) That hearse … those sick headlines … us trod underfoot; crack’d crests and tombstones to stick in the boot. Tenners for fivers, casinos and malls; the moonbeams, the taunting - it all still appals. Tramps … thieves … thugs … beggars - our mem’ries are long; famine and blight, cruelly mocked - that vile song! Slurs on our icons, a slanderous game; no substance, no basis - pure libel, no shame! Dignity hijacked, its essence demeaned; delusions of grandeur illicitly gleaned: Taxes, what taxes? … that’s fine for the rest - just don’t expect us to pay to be simply the best! Well, the game’s up - the chickens have come home to roost; there’s a fox in the hen-coop - ‘ra peepil’ are goosed. But don’t look for pity, those deep scars still gnaw; the insults still rankle … our wounds way too raw! Copyright © 25thMay1967, February 2012 | 18 2 12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanBorne On Wings (The Legend, “Henke”) | Today, in Helsingborg, Sweden, the home town of Celtic legend, Henrik Larsson, a bronze sculpture will be unveiled and dedicated to the great man, whose career with Helsingborg, Feyenoord, CELTIC, Barcelona and Manchester United earned him a worthy place in the pantheon of world football greats. Fittingly, another Celtic giant, “Lisbon Lion”, Bertie Auld, will represent the Club (and all of us) at the unveiling ceremony. To mark the occasion and in particular to commemorate Henrik’s unforgettable reign as Celtic’s “King of Kings” and “Magnificent 7″, 25thMay1967 is proud to pay him our trademark poetic tribute. Thanks a million, “Henke”! “Borne On Wings” (the legend, ‘Henke’) dark destroyer, borne on wings born to let the people sing swift to smite foes overawed put usurpers to the sword touched by genius, humble yet called to greatness, greatness met with the legends set to dwell litany of ‘Greats’ to swell Nordo-Celtic demigod ranks in unison applaud mighty hero, mighty deeds of our dreams the very seed warrior back in ninety-eight when the hounds were at the gate wellspring of a thousand thrills fearsome ‘Tiger of Seville’ … … dark destroyer, borne on wings dreadlock skinhead, ‘King of Kings’ Copyright 25thMay1967, June 2011 | 2 6 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Clean25th May 1967/2011 – The Legend Endures | Forty-four years ago today saw the birth of Celtic’s most enduring legend – that of the Lisbon Lions. It is a legend that burns as brightly today as did the hopes of the entire Celtic family just over forty-six years ago, on the return of Jock Stein to Celtic Park on 9th March 1965. Exactly fourteen months later, on 9th May 1966, two days after the clinching of Celtic’s first league championship in twelve years, the Big Man made the following prophetic announcement: “It is up to us, to everyone at Celtic Park now, to build up our own legends. We don’t want to live with history, to be compared to legends of the past. We must make new legends and our League Championship win is the first step towards doing that.” The rest IS legend, as recorded in “A SEASON IN THE SUN”, the definitive book on Celtic’s ‘Wonder Year’ of 1966/67, which spawned this blog and is now available as a Kindle eBook, with a proportion of proceeds going to help the wonderful work of the Celtic Graves Society. The Introduction to that book, which you can enjoy here in the accompanying podcast, sets the scene for the tale of an epic journey into Celtic folklore by a squad of young men (and one veteran!) who could never have imagined what stretched before them. CleanThe Big Man (A Celtic Giant) | Has any other figure in the game so comprehensively defined an age and writ his name as large upon the page as big Jock Stein – to many minds the greatest single Celt there’s ever been? The Big Man, ostracised by kith and kin because he wouldn’t toe the bigot line, in time embodied everything that’s fine about this club, of which he was the beating heart and soul – its very hub. Though as a player limited, it’s true, he always gave his all … you can’t ask more. In nineteen fifty-three and fifty-four it proved enough to lead the Celts to glory, doubly sweet – what sterling stuff! A visionary, a man before his time, big Jock replaced our eight-year vale of tears with dominance unknown for sixty years, since Maley’s pomp; transplanted Kelly Kids with Lisbon Lions – unleashed a romp. Now, cast in bronze, he rightly takes his place within the iconic huddle by the door: three legends unsurpassed in Celtic lore, to all endeared – once consummate ambassadors in life, in death revered. CleanWere You There? (The Celtic Huddle-fest) | Were you there when it all came together and we ran the Mob ragged all day? As the Huddle broke out, they were left in no doubt that the Celtic were up for the fray. \o/ Were you there when it all came together and we closed ranks as never before? As we huddled and sang, how the heaving stands rang - and the Dark Side was getting it sore. \o/ Were you there when it all came together and the Green Brigade led us in song? When I hear all that stuff, I just can’t get enough - fifty thousand Tims … one singing throng! \o/ Were you there when it all came together? Something special was happening out there. Even neutrals could sense, something truly intense was unfolding – they wanted a share. \o/ Were you there when it all came together and they knew that their number was up? They were flattered at three, Celtic hot, running free and those turkeys got roasted and stuffed. \o/ Were you there when it all came together, on the day Lenny’s team came of age? How Big Jock would approve - we were well in the groove, on a day only history can gauge. \o/ Copyright 25thMay1967, 21 February 2011 | 22 2 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanI Just Can’t Get Enough – A Celtic Battle Cry | Every city can boast a big ‘Derby’, where the rivalry’s keen, fierce and tough; but in Glasgow it hums, to flutes, whistles and drums - and know what? I just can’t get enough! It’s been dubbed the ‘Old Firm’ – but I hate that, ’cos it’s steeped in sectarian guff; and it makes me feel sick, how we’re tarred with one stick - but know what? I just can’t get enough! When it comes to the hype and the mind games, ‘Walter’ thinks he’s the master of bluff; but in Lenny we trust … he’s the Gaffer, we must – and know what? I just can’t get enough! When it’s time to square up to the ‘Dark Side’, you just know things are gonna’ get rough; time to dig in, stand tall, face them down, give your all - bring it on! I just can’t get enough! (With compliments to the Green Brigade and Depeche Mode) Copyright 25thMay1967, February 2011 | 19 2 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanThe Mighty Atom – A Celtic Homage | Of all the names that linger in the mind, of all the epic feats that still reverb around the Celtic pantheon of greats and legends true, there’s surely none surpasses “Patsy”, who can never die. The cloak of immortality’s reserved for only that elite selected few, so deeply etched into the hearts of those they leave behind, their memory can never be consigned to history. Enshrined within that hallowed litany is one who, though of stature slight and frail, lit up a brutal era, carved his niche and shot to fame, fulfilled his destiny, thus earned acclaim, as was his due. Through anecdote, like minstrelsy of yore, his mighty deeds resound, they echo still and “Patsy”, though no longer in our midst, is with us yet, an icon, cast in lore, lest we forget - an all-time Great!
