VideoArt of Spectra 'Boundaries' | Sweden comes to Article19 today in the shape of Art of Spectra and their current touring work 'Boundaries', a work that is, as you would expect, all about the boundaries in our lives or the lack thereof. The company have been creating and touring since 1999 (the same year Article19 came into existence coincidentally) and if the current piece is any indication then we have all been missing out on a lot of great movement. Art of Spectra features a company of dancers so grounded you couldn't knock them over with a bulldozer, this is a good thing. AoS say this much; "Peter Svenzon has for Art Of Spectra created an exciting and dynamic new creation with an international cast. In an atmosphere inspired by the worlds of David Lynch, he examines general human issues in this physical, expressive and uploaded performance. The multi cultural background of the dancers bringing different experience of boundaries and environments has influenced the creation of Avgränsat." Touring is ongoing so check the company website for more details. Our feature brings you a feature on the work itself as well as an interview piece with company AD Peter Svenzon and company manager and dancer Ulriqa Fernqvist. 'Boundaries' is performed by Ulriqa Fernqvist, Sosso Harryson, Morgan Karlsson, Hannes Lundin and Raymond Roa. With choreography by Peter Svenson and additional music by Sharooz Raoofi. (Peter Svenzon replaced Morgan Karlsson for this performance). Filmed at @Space, University of Leeds on March 30th 2012. | 17 | VideoBallet Lorent 'Underneath the Floorboards' | Safe to say that the wacky world of dance is not overrun with dance works for the "wee folk", that is small children aged 5 and under. Step forward Ballet Lorent with 'Underneath the Floorboards' to fill that particular void. Instead of creating a work and then sitting uncontrollable little ones in an auditorium this particular show creates a very small, very safe place for the kids to get so close to the show they are actually a part of it. The work tells the story of a young boy who falls asleep and dreams of discovering his old toys underneath the floorboards of the house he is about to move away from. High jinks ensue. 'Underneath the Floorboards' neatly intertwines movement, music and adorable costume and set design that keeps even the most hysterical children hypnotised for the full 45 minute run. The company say this much; "Underneath The Floorboards is a new work from balletLORENT's award-winning choreographer Liv Lorent and co-produced by Northern Stage. Liv has worked with a compelling range of collaborators to create this enchanting production for under 5s with costumes designed and realised by Paul Shriek, story and songs written by Ben Crompton, music and songs composed by Kit Haigh, set designed and realised by Andy Stephenson" Our feature brings you an interview with company AD and show creator Liv Lorent along with an profile interview with dancer Philippa White. | 20 | VideoAkash Odedra Company 'Rising' | We have said often, here in TheLab™, that the solo is perhaps one of the most difficult tasks a professional dancer can undertake, especially when you are performing four solos all by different dance makers in the same evening. Step forward Aakash Odedra who takes on the work of Akram Khan, Russell Maliphant and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui alongside one of his own pieces. What emerges is a diverse mix of ideas and movement styles all channeled through one dancer. The company say this much about the work; Aakash Odedra Company is a new venture led by performer and artistic director, Aakash Odedra intended as a vehicle for his own choreographic work. Trained initially in the classical Indian styles of Kathak and Bharatanatyam, Aakash has performed with a diverse range of local and international artists. He has been the recipient of several awards including a bursary by Akademi to develop his choreographic skills and a professional development grant that allowed him to travel and train in New York, Europe and India. Aakash was invited by Akram Khan to perform a solo choreographed by Kumudini Lakhia at Sadler's Wells. The piece was commissioned by Akram Khan Charitable Trust and Sadler's Wells and subsequently, Aakash was invited to join Akram Khan Company for the R&D phase of 'Vertical Road'. 'Rising' is the first work to be presented by the company. Our video feature includes footage from all four works along with an interview with Mr Odedra himself where he discusses the arduos task of putting this programme together. On a cold January day we ventured south to catch the show as it was intended to be seen. If you are very lucky you will also catch the music live played by the Belgian music ensemble Aranis. The company tell us this much about the work; Layers of Skin is a unique contemporary dance performance project that can exist in different formats and size. | 22 | VideoCompany Chameleon 'Gameshow' Interview | Manchester based Company Chameleon have been working and touring for years now but just recently they became one of three newly anointed "National Portfolio Organisations" for dance by the big bad ACE. Their latest work, as the title might suggest, is a riff on the cheesy game show format deployed by many television companies to keep audience glued to their goggle box so they can watch advertising. Advertising, commercialism and consumer culture are in fact the central theme of this particular work as the protagonists Kevin Turner and Anthony Missen explain in our interview with them. The company say this much; "Gameshow focuses on desire, seduction and manipulation. Anthony Missen and Kevin Edward Turner invite you to watch and pass judgment, as contestants test their luck against the big man J.O.Z. the personification of excess itself. A show packed full of physical movement, fearless dancing and athletics, with prizes, power, money, fame, celebrity and a cult following, up for grabs, or at the very least a new pair of trainers. Missen and Turner ask what needs to be sacrificed in order to win big." This new work will be touring throughout the new year, check the company's website for more details on that. 'Gameshow' is choreographed and performed by Anthony Missen and Kevin Turner with music by Dieb13. Performance was filmed at the Lowry Theatre in Manchester on November 17th 2011. | 26 | VideoParlor Dance 'Step Forward' | Almost a year to the day since we brought you another site specific work from the stable of dance maker Helen Parlor. Now she's back along with three dancers this time with a work inspired by the science of movement. Working with actual scientists, otherwise known as boffins from Oxford Brookes University, the company haver created a work based on scientific research conducted into human walking and stride patterns, also known as "gait'. The company tell us this much about the piece; "The emphasis for the medical monitoring of Neurological diseases is based on measuring physical movement, but this is just one component that has a huge effect on the patients. The Movement Science Group at Oxford Brookes University, led by Professor Helen Dawes uses novel digital sensor systems to monitor patient progress. The clever bit is that from this they build complex algorithms to translate this immense numeric data into something more than just physical information, providing answers on how a neurological disease like Parkinsons or Strokes should and can be treated." For our feature we bring you, of course, film of the work itself alongside interviews with dance maker Helen Parlor, scientist Dr. Ryan Pink and company dancer Chris Bradley. At present there are no immediate plans to tour the work but research and development is underway to expand the scope of the project and expand the scientific research. You can check the company's website for further details. 'Step Forward' is performed by Effie McGuire Ward, Jamie Roberts and Chris Bradley with music by Dr Paul Whitty and choreography by Helen Parlor. | 27 | VideoInterview with Peggy Jarrell Kaplan | Peggy Jarrell Kapplan, a New York based photographer, has been taking portraits of dance makers since the 1970's. From Trisha Brown to William Forsythe there is barely a choreographer she has not captured on her (film based) camera. The Coda Oslo International Dance Festival is hosting an exhibition of the photographers work with many participants, both past and present, being part of that exhibition, In our interview Ms Kaplan talks about getting her start in photography and the ongoing project to capture every dance maker there has ever been in a portrait. You want to know the craziest thing? It's not even her job! It's all about the passion. Peggy Jarrell Kaplan's photographs have been exhibited in international dance festivals, most recently at Tanz Im August and Dublin Dance Festival. Her portraits were selected to be part of Pina Bausch's 2004 Festival and were included in the Mikhail Baryshnikov White Oak Dance Project's PASTforward international traveling tour. Her portraits of Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, and underground artists from the Soviet Union have been widely reproduced. Her work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Museum in New York. From an historical point of view Ms Kaplan has been there from almost the start of the post modern movement in New York back in the day through the emergence of Pina Bausch and many other luminaries of the dance world. Unfortunate there is no website for further information but if you want to see of her work in exhibition then they do pop up all over the world from time to time so keep your eyes open. Filmed at Dansens Hus, Oslo, Norway on October 20th 2011. Video brought to you with the support, in part, of Arts Council England and Coda Oslo Dance Festival. | 6 2 12 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoCarte Blanche 'Corps De Walk | The national dance company of Norway was once again in attendance at the Coda Dance Festival in Oslo for 2011. This year brings a very unusual work from the stable of Israeli dance maker Sharon Eyal. The costumes and the lighting design make this work look very old school but the movement and the sound score bring it firmly into modern times. What you can't see on the video is the bright blue contact lenses all the dancers are wearing that makes for a slightly surreal experience when you see the work in theatres. They say this much about it; "Corps de Walk is about walking, about moving, about a static condition of unique moments and tiny, subtle changes in body posture. The 12 dancers are uniformly dressed in flesh-coloured suits, with white hair and white contact lenses. Sudden, individual sallies in the choreography and muscular dynamics are glimpsed only to quickly vanish within tightly controlled lines or seemingly chaotic formations in which the dancers nonetheless have complete control. Sharon Eyal has collaborated with the Israeli musician and DJ Ori Lichtik for many years and his soundscape reinforces her potent language for the stage also in this production." 'Corps De Walk' is performed by Camilla Spidsøe Cohen, Caroline Eckly, Guro Rimeslåtten, Jennifer Dubreuil Houthemann, Christine Kjellberg, Rebecca Hytting, Christopher Flinder Petersen, Ole Martin Meland, Simbarashe Norman Fulukia, Shlomi Ruimi, Yaniv Cohen, Edhem Jesenkovic with choregraphy by Sharon Eyal with Gai Bachar and sound design by Ori Lichtik and many others. Performance filmed at Dansens Hus, Oslo, Norway on October 20th 2011. Video brought to you with the support, in part, of Arts Council England and Coda Oslo Dance Festival. | 6 2 12 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoErvi Siren 'VIITA' | At the last Coda festival in 2009 one of the stand out performances was from the Finnish dance maker and dancer Terro Saarinen and this year this is no different. Mr Saarinen isn't back but Ervi Sirén is along with her all female company with the work 'VIITA'. This is a pure dance piece with just a hint of backstory. They speak of this work thus; "Viita is a celebration of femininity, vitality and the art of dancing. Seven powerful and expressive women captivate the audience with their flowing dance, full of energy and bodily memories. The title of the piece, literally meaning a birch forest that just came out, refers to something new, unexpected, wild and mysterious. Choreographer Ervi Sirén is a renowned dance artist and teacher who has had a wide-spread influence on the development of contemporary dance in Finland. Sirén is performing herself in Viita." The work is performed by Ervi Sirén, Jonna Eiskonen, Anne Hiekkaranta, Tuovi Rantanen, Terhi Vaimala, Hanna Ahti, Eeva Muilu with choreography by Ervi Sirén. Performance filmed at Dansens Hus, Oslo, Norway on October 20th 2011. Video brought to you with the support, in part, of Arts Council England and Coda Oslo Dance Festival. | 6 2 12 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoBatsheva 'Horra' | Back in the day Ohad Naharin was responsible for creating one of our favourite pieces of dance, that piece of dance being 'Axioma 7' performed by Rambert when Christopher Bruce was in charge. These days Mr Naharin is the AD of Batsheva in Israel and 'Horra' is a very different kind of work. What we have here are a dozen or so dancers trapped in a green space from which there is no escape. We also have one of the weirdest collections of music ever heard and that's saying something in the wacky world of contemporary dance. The company say this much; "Horra is performed by 11 dancers who are always on stage, always present, always available. Their rich movements encounter a tantalizing soundtrack arranged and performed by pioneering synthesizer musician Isao Tomita. In Horra, Naharin and his dancers present a sequence of climaxes with almost no rest in between." 'Horra' is performed by Shachar Biniamini, Iyar Elezra, Shani Garfinkel, Chen-Wei Lee, Ori Ofri, Rachael Osborne, Shamel Pitts, Guy Shomroni, Bobbi Smith, Adi Zlatin, Matan David with choreography by Ohad Naharin. Performance filmed at Bærum Kulturhus, Oslo, Norway on October 17th 2011. Video brought to you with the support, in part, of Arts Council England and Coda Oslo International Dance Festival. | 6 2 12 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoBallet Preljocaj 'Empty Moves Parts I & II' | Some, if not most of you, may never have been subjected to an hour long piece by infamous composer John Cage, he of the Merce Cunningham collaboration. Well, we, here in TheLab™, went through that experience this past Tuesday with a performance of 'Empty Moves [Parts I & II] from Ballet Preljocaj. Check it out for yourself above and all we shall say is this. Mr Cage is certainly an experience to remember, especially when you counter point it with movement from Angelin Preljocaj. We managed to film some of this work in rehearsal when the soundtrack was not being used. It's amazing how different it looks when you see it in silence. The company say this much about the work; 'Empty moves is composed of actions and movements inspired by the words and phonemes read by John Cage at the Teatro Lirico in Milan, recorded live on December 2. 1977. The notion of the alienation effect, of the disintegration of the movement and of a new manner of choreographic phrasing takes precedence over their meaning and essence. Through these means this dance work connects with the text by Henry David Thoreau which was John Cage's starting point, and attempts to reach the unflappable pugnacity of the mastermind behind that evening in Milan.' This work no longer tours but you can garner more information from the company's website. 'Empty Moves' is performed Gaëlle Chappaz, Fabrizio Clemente, Julien Thibault & Yurie Tsugawa with choreography by Angelin Preljocaj. Performance filmed at Dansens Hus, Oslo, Norway on October 11th 2011. | 33 | VideoAce Dance and Music 'Ice' | Ace Dance and Music are back on tour with their brand new, co-created work 'ICE', performed for the very first time this past Saturday in a very sunny Leeds. For this season the company have brought in Japanese dance maker Akiko Kitamura to collaborate with the company's AD Gail Parmell. What emerges is an eclectic mix of movement styles and video graphics projected on to the floor and back wall of the stage. All of these choreo-electronic shenanigans are designed to take a long hard look at the world of electronic communications and what happens when you take them away. The company say this much about the work; "ICE reflects on how technology infiltrates our lives, set in a clinical white space with powerful visual projections, fast paced streams of movement & bodies frozen in time. As the performance starts & the temperature drops to freezing point, ICE allows us to preserve the moment & dream together of how the future might be. As the thaw comes, do we cross over & become something else? Or are we forever crystalised. Is this our future? Be touched & amazed. ICE is raw, vibrant and full of expression. With cutting-edge Japanese style, precise timing, strength, control & fierce execution. Music & dance to elevate the soul. " Our video features include an interview with two of the company dancers, Kajza Ekberg and John Ross where they discuss 'ICE', working with two very different dance makers on the same work and life in the wacky world of dance. 'ICE' is performed by Kajza Ekberg, John Ross, Sade Alleyne, Letty Mitchell, Jerome Wilks, Laura Vanhulle, Claire Burell and Eleanora Pennacchini with choreography by & Akiko Kitamura. Music is by Hiroaki Yokoyama. Touring continues through the autumn and into the winter, you can find complete tour details on the company's website. | 37 | VideoGary Clarke 'Bagofti' | Coming to Article19 for the first time with the rather oddly titled 'Bagofti' (the reason for the name is explained in the interview) is dance maker Gary Clarke. Having performed with many dance companies across the UK and Europe as well as choreographing work for a diverse range of groups Mr Clarke comes to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for the first time with dancer Gavin Coward with a brand new solo work. This particular solo (the dance world's most difficult of challenges) is inspired by the painter Francis Bacon. They say this much about the work; "Bagofti is a one man solo show that delves deep into the bold, austere and highly expressive art work of iconic figurative painter Francis Bacon. Part dance, part sculpture, Bagofti is a mesmerising display of sheer physicality in response to the personal life and and art works of one of the world's greatest 20th century artists." Further touring plans are as yet unconfirmed but after a dozen or more shows at the Fringe they may well be looking to rest for a while. You can get updates through the company website though. 'Bagofti' is performed by Gavin Coward with Choreography by Gary Clarke. music is from The Michael Garrick Trio, Vincent Galio and Jim Reeves. This performance was filmed on August 19 2011 at DanceBase in Edinburgh as part of their 'Home of Dance' season for the Fringe. | 38 | VideoBalbir Singh 'Decreasing Infinity' | Time for a strange mix of styles both dance and music wise with Balbir Singh Dance Company and their work 'Decreasing Infinity'. We caught up with them at the Fringe in Edinburgh. The mix of styles we have on show are contemporary dance and kathak for the movement and the music comes from the tabla and beatbox genres. All of this is combined into a duet featuring, wait for it, two dancers! (that's funny, Ed!) The company say this much about the work; "Balbir Singh Dance Company's Decreasing Infinity explores the mutual attraction, collision and synthesis of Indian Kathak and contemporary dance. An intensely rhythmic male duet with live musicians (tabla, human beatbox)" Balbir Singh Dance Company have been working now for the last 10 years on works of various kinds. Based in the north of England the company was recently granted NPO status by the big bad Arts Council of England so things are looking peachy for the near future. Our feature brings you footage from the work and an interview with the company AD Balbir Singh himself. 'Decreasing Infinity' is performed by Ezekiel Oliveira and Sooraj Subramanian with choreography by Balbir Singh and music from John Ball and Bigg Taj. | 39 | VideoSmallpetitklein 'Falling Man' | Thomas Small has been creating dance work now for more than a decade with his company Smallpetitklein based in Dundee in the North of Scotland. 'Falling Man' marks their first excursion into the crowded world of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and draws its inspiration from an infamous photograph taken by Associated Press photographer Richard Drew during the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11 2001. During our interview we spoke to both Thomas Small and dancer Tom Pritchard about the work, tackling a difficult subject matter and how audiences here and in New York reacted to the piece. The company say this much "Fresh from performances in New York City, award-winning choreographer Thomas Small presents his hauntingly beautiful new work Falling Man. Inspired by Richard Drew's series of photographs capturing a man falling from the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks. Combining text and storytelling to deliver an inherently emotive piece of dance theatre." 'Falling Man' forms part of a triple bill the company has available for touring. Check their website for further details and future performances. Following the EFF they will be touring to local venues around Scotland. The work is performed by Tom Pritchard with choreography by Thomas Small and music by Max Richter. Interview conducted by Susan Cunningham. | 40 | VideoJack Webb 'Beta Wave Transport' | Although Jack Webb may be new to Article19 in terms of video features he's certainly not new to Article19 itself, having been a blogger here for quite some time. No writing this time however just dance making and performing in Mr Webb's new solo 'Beta Wave Transport' specially commissioned by DanceBase in Edinburgh and Dance House in Glasgow. As he explains in the interview this work is not at all about pure dance. Rather, this particular work is more at home with the more post-modern of contemporary dance pieces. The press release text tells us this much about the piece; "Beta Wave Transport is an extraordinary solo from a rising new star in Scottish dance. Scrambling between the jellylike mass of the subconscious mind to the destruction of the tamed man, it is a breeding ground for the freedom of body, mind and instinct." Also during interview Jack tells us about creating the new work, the life of a freelance independent dance maker and living and working in the frozen north (Scotland). | 41 | VideoCharles Linehan Company 'The Fault Index' | Time to kick back with a cold drink on a comfy sofa because Charles Linehan is back with two new works in the dance makers signature, very laid back style. Nothing happens in a hurry in Mr Linehan's world and 'The Fault Index' and 'The Clearing' are no exception, you can practically feel the pace being measured as the work progresses from one deftly created slice of movement to the next. 'The Clearing' was originally commissioned by Dance Umbrella in 2010 as a site specific but has been trimmed and re-worked for life on the road. So if you know the work from before, check it out again for a different take, you know you want to. Both works feature specially commissioned scores. The company say this much; "The Fault Index is a series of connected and unconnected incidents. Juxtaposed along 'fault lines', the random alignment of where the episodes fall underpins the themes of displacement, discontinuity and unity. At its heart is a bedrock of ensemble pieces that weave together disparate and independent choreographic elements in a percussive and spirited tour de force. In The Clearing, slow transformations evolve within a complex weave of interlocking melodies, off-rhythms and beautiful sonorities. A commissioned score by Richard Skelton features in a sonic and lighting environment that is unique to each setting." 'The Fault Index' and 'The Clearing' are performed by Luke Birch, Theo Clinkard, Grieg Cooke, Claire Cunningham, Rachel Lopex de la Nieta and Rahel Vonmoos. For this year the graduate company from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds has assembled Charles Linehan, Debora Jonhson, Thomas Noon, Peter Mika and Ben Wright to craft the movement. | 49 | VideoInterview Luca Marazia | As you may guess from the title we have for you, our dear readers, a video feature from one of the premiere Scandinavian dance companies and living proof that our Nordic friends have more about them than good health care and progressive social policies. On their soon to be completed UK tour the company are performing three works by the in-house AD Tim Rushton. Namely; 'Enigma', 'CaDance' and 'Kridt'. What we have here is a solid mix of contemporary with a hint of the classical extension (get you! Ed!) but no so much that we descend into the madness of William Forsythe. The company say this much about themselves; "Established in 1981 the Danish Dance Theatre is one of the major forces in contemporary dance in Denmark. The British born Tim Rushton took over the artistic leadership in 2001. Under his direction, the company has gained an international presence and enjoyed acclaim throughout Europe, North America, Australia and the Middle East. The vision of the Danish Dance Theatre is to push the borders of the perception of dance. The gap between contemporary and classical dance is the signature playground of Tim Rushton and the company. " Our feature brings you a segment from each of the three works and an interview with company dancer Luca Marazia with whom we discuss the work, touring and the oddities of teaching in this weird little country of ours! Danish Dance Theatre's triple bill is performed by Luca Marazia, Adi Armit, Minna Beirglund, Stefanos Bizas, Bjorn Nilsson, Milou Nuyens, Erik Nyberg, Alessandro Sousa Pereira, and Ana Sendas with choregraphy by Tim Rushton. This time the company's creative protagonist, Luca Silvestrini, is taking aim at social networking and all of its related foibles. With video animation by Rachel Davies, lighting by Jackie Shemesh - co-creators of Protein's Dear Body - and with an original music by Andy Pink, LOL (lots of love) mixes social comment, provocative humour and engaging performances." Our video feature brings you some of the work and an interview with the shows creator, Luca Silvestrini himself. 'LOL' is currently in the midst of a national tour with their next performance at the Curve Theatre in Leicester on February 28th. Check out the tour website for more dates. Dancers are; Sally Marie, Fernanda Prata, Stuart Waters, Omar Gordon, Kip Johnson and Patsy Browne-Hope with choreography by Luca Silvestrini. | 53 | VideoTilted 'Masquerade' | In the wide world of dance there are few that can create a world in a box like Maresa von Stockert. Deftly crafting audio, movement and narrative to tell a good yarn whilst never over staying her welcome on stage. Tilted Productions new work is ideally suited to this particular dance makers creative prowess because 'Masquerade' is all about exploring the weird world of dreams. Adding to the mix this time out we have some crazy, and some scary, masks and prosthetics created by John Schoonraad, one of which is a giant replica of one of the dancers heads and when we say it's giant, we mean it! It'll blow your mind man! The company say this much about the work; "Masquerade is inspired by Freud's interpretation of dreams and the Surrealist movement of the mid 20th century and its fascination with the subconscious, eroticism & death and the mystery of time. Feasting the eyes and provoking the mind, six outstanding dancers aged between 25 and 60 will turn bone structures liquid and de- & re-construct bodies and their secrets." 'Masquerade' is performed by Amy Bell, Joy Constantinides, Jake Ingram-Dodd, Simon Palmer, Natalie Thorn, Anna Richmond and Roseanne Anderson with choreography by Maresa von Stockert and sound design by Jeremy Cox. The next performance is on Saturday 12 February, 8pm, at Déda in Derby with national touring continuing after that. Check the company's website for further details and don't have nightmares. | 54 | VideoCompany Chameleon 'Search and Find' | Company Chameleon, comprised of dancer/choreographer combo Anthony Missen and Kevin Turner have been quietly making and touring work for several years in the murky depths on Manchester. Not only does the company create but the duo are heavily involved in teaching and outreach work with a specific focus on getting young men involved in dance. 'Search and Find', on this occasion, was performed as part of the Urban Moves festival last summer, an outdoor only dance festival. Despite the flag stone floor, on a main street in Manchester city centre, the two dancers perform with the same physical dexterity and professionalism you expect on a nice cosy stage. The company say this much about the work; "Search & Find explores the idea of connection and disconnection between people, as two protagonists search for a way to find a sense of shared understanding and purpose.Physically awesome and sensitive, the work invites you to consider your connection with others. This new work features an original sound score from renowned composer and musician Miguel Marin. Search & Find was commissioned by Dance Initiative Greater Manchester." 'Search and Find' is scheduled for it's next performance in June but the company has several other works on tour to various venues. '7' will be performed at the Contact Theatre in Manchester on February 5th. Check the company's website for more details. | 55 | VideoFootwerk 'A Fools Journey' | Quite a lot of dance work in this cold and often unpleasant land, takes place not in the warm confines of the theatre but in the harsh outdoors. ' A Fool's Journey' created by Footwerk is one such piece of dance. Created by dance maker Helen Parlor, alongside writer Sally Annette the work takes a long hard look at the Tarot cards for inspiration to create the movement and the small vignettes of the story. 'A Fool's Journey' featured seven professional dancers and several dozen young folk to form a climatic flash mob at the end of the twenty minute work. Despite freezing temperatures in the shopping mall in Milton Keynes, a city best known and rightly so for its multitude of roundabouts, the pros were, well, professional and the youngsters didn't even flinch. The piece was part of the larger FringMK festival held in Milton Keynes that covers a wide range of art forms. The company say this much about the work; Annett has developed a circular dance narrative based on the historical representation of Alphabet and Archetype, based loosely on Petrach's Triumphs, ideas of 'Theatre du Memoir' and the Renaissance game of 'Tarrochi' but contemporises these ideas by linking them into a'genetic alphabet'. Footwerk will then choreograph the piece, working with professional international dancers and martial artists to produce simple, set pattern movements, which can then be distilled further and taught to groups of any level and ability. We will be working with community groups which will include regional dance groups, schools, martial arts clubs, senior citizens and women's groups, attracting and encouraging a much wider demographic to not only watch, but participate. At the time of writing there are no plans to perform the work again but check the company's website for further details, because it may re-surface. 'A Fool's Journey' is performed by Anette Meiltoft, Chris Bradley, Kate Mason, Sioda Martin, Dean Reeve, Adam Rutherford and Michael Naylor with music by Nathaniel Reed. | 4 1 11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoInterview with Jasmin Vardimon | The previous work to come from Jasmin Vardimon Company was the retrospective piece 'Yesterday'. This time up with '7734' we have an altogether darker work that plays on mankind's ability to be unspeakably cruel and unreservedly kind Although Ms Vardimon draws on her personal experience and research of the holocaust the work itself is not specifically about that time in history, although the title, '7734', does refer to a specific date and, more obviously, when turned upside down and read backwards it spells out 'hell' The work takes place on a stage adorned with an enormous watchtower and a large pile of discarded clothes, used for both comic and sinister effect throughout, perhaps leaning more toward the sinister. Also on show is the company's trademark movement style with a lot of high intensity and extremely difficult movement performed, as ever, by a group of world class contemporary dancers. The company say this much about the work; Throughout her body of work, Jasmin has illustrated the power to grip and seduce audiences; exciting with athletic prowess, lulling through quiet beauty and tearing our emotions with a gutsy voice of intention. Man's inhumanity to man never ceases to stun each generation. 7734 questions the human forces and weaknesses that have manufactured hell on earth whilst illuminating both our capacity for survival and the poetry of hope. If you're going to see the show live then prepare yourself for a two hour stay (plus interval). Our videos bring you some sections from the work and an Interview with Jasmin Vardimon where she discusses '7734' and her motivations for creating the piece. '7734 is perfromed by Mafalda Deville, Luke Burrough, Sam Coren, Tim Casson, Olga Clavel-Gimeno, Estéban Fourmi, David Lloyd, YunKrung Song and Elena Stavropoulou. Choregraphy by Jasminn Vardimon and music from various sources. The work continues to tour both nationally and internationally for the forseeable future, check the companies website for more details. | 3 1 11 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoCandoco Dance Company 'In Translation' | Candoco Dance Company took to the road once again this past April with their new touring triple bill entitled 'Renditions' with continued touring ever since. As triple bills go this is about an eclectic mix as you are likely to find in the wacky world of dance. Featuring 'In Translation' from Israeli dancesmith Emanuel Gat, 'Imperfect Storm' created by dance/theatre bod Wendy Houstoun and finally 'The Hangman' crafted by the lesser known (to these shores at least) Sarah Michelson. If we could sum these collective works up in the simplest terms how would be we do it? Well, this 'aint Richard Alston, that much is certain, so if you're looking for something fresh and challenging then make your way to a live show. The company say this much about 'Renditions'; "Candoco Dance Company presents three varied new works that show audiences in one evening everything that dance can be. Visually striking, intensely physical, but with great theatrical humour the evening is spectacularly entertaining and full of artistic flair." Our video features include an excerpt from 'In Translation' by Mr Gat. An interview with one of the company's artistic directors (they have two) Stine Nilsen, where she discusses what being an inclusive dance company means, funding issues and much more. We also have an interview with two of the company's dancers, Vicky Malin and Dan Daw. The interviews also include footage from the three works. 'Renditions' is performed by Annie Hanauer, Bettina Carpi, Vicky Malin, Dan Daw, Chris Owen, Darren Anderson and Ellie Baker. | 61 | VideoLudus Dance 'Pandemonium' | For the first time here on Article19 we bring you the latest touring productions from Ludus Dance Company, which, believe it or not, is one of the longest running dance companies in these United Kingdoms! Another first is the company's commissioning of a touring triple bill with works from Yael Flexer 'What If?', Nigel Charnock 'Pandemonium' and Ben Wright 'A four'. The three works are all touring under the 'Consequences' banner. Each work brings a mixture of dance, theatre and general chaos, slightly safer than none general chaos, with Nigel Charnock's work in particular going for a hefty mix of madness. Who else in the wide world of choreography would mix music from Vivaldi and Aphex Twin? Not many we'll wager. Ludus say this much about the new triple bill: The triple-bill format is a new departure for Ludus Dance, and Consequences features the work of three of the UK's biggest names in choreography. Nigel Charnock, celebrated for repeatedly breaking new ground, brings you a thunderously chaotic chunk of dance theatre that explores the effects of order and chaos on our lives, whilst poking fun at the self-destructing tendencies of our fame hungry society. Yael Flexer, renowned for connecting with audiences on a human level, reveals a very different interpretation on the theme. Her choreography sees the four dancers caught up in the ripple effect of their own decisions as they create a show before your very eyes. Meanwhile, Ben Wright, director of bgroup dance company and internationally recognised choreographer, explores fragmented histories, and calls us to seize the moment... NOW! Aimed at young people and first-time dance audiences, Consequences has wide appeal and is set to entertain through a pulse-racing mix of jaw-dropping dance, theatre and music. Our video brings you a section from Mr Charnock's 'Pandemonium' (video 1), an interview feature with Ludus Director Di Cummins and Nigel Charnock that includes excerpts from all three works (video 2) and the full unedited interview with Mr Charnock (video 3). Dancers for each work are Ellen Turner, Rebecca Thomas, Neb Abbot and George Adams. 'Consequences' continues touring for the next 18 months. | 64 | VideoCandoco Dance Company 'And who shall go to the ball' | Candoco Dance Company are now in their 16th year of creating and touring a wide range of creative works for dancers with and without disabilities. Their signature theme is not one seeking sympathy but of performing the best work to the highest professional standard. This particular piece is probably not one of their most accessible works, thanks in large part to the music, but the dancers still shine and make the work their own. Created by Rafael Bonachela the press words say this; "With composer Scott Walker setting the scene for a sinister and primal ball, Rafael Bonachela’s choreography cuts through the space, pushing the dancers into extreme connections, entangled in each others bodies, throwing their partners into flight, only to catch and grab and throw again and again and again. Since its inception 16 years ago, CandoCo has aimed high, high in quality of movement, high in integrity of dance as an art form and high in expectations of ourselves as performers. Our focus is on dance not disability, professionalism not therapy." The company's next show is at the Oxford Playhouse on the 13th of February, full details on the company's website. Dancers: Bettina Carpi, Natalie Ayton, Marc Brew, Jorge Crecis, Freddie Opoku Addaie, Nadia Adame Rojas, Zoe Brown with music by Scott Walker. | 16 4 10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoScottish Dance Theatre 'The Life and Time of Girl A' | Scottish Dance Theatre, which has nothing to do with reels or ceilidhs and that's the last time we're going to tell you that, is back on tour with a series of new works one of which we bring you, our dear readers, for your viewing pleasure. 'The Life and Times of Girl A' was created for the company by Ben Duke of Lost Dog fame and features a healthy mix of dance (no surprises there), theatre, a little bit of live projection thrown in for good measure and a stand out acting performance from Solene Weinachter. SDT say this much about their new work; "Lost Dog's award winning Ben Duke brings his 'highly theatrical and subversively humorous style' (Metro) to his new work for SDT. A woman is trying to tell us something important about what is happening now. What she needs is a film crew and a financier, what she's got is a stage and some dancers. A piece about moments of crisis both emotional and financial, when all we need is to use less to say more. Duke's work breaks new ground in his use of improvised performance in exploring emotional states of play at a meeting point between movement and speech." Also on the current tour is the in house production 'NQR' (not featured), 'In The Middle of the Moment' and 'Drift'. The programme you get to see is dependant on the tour date so check ahead of time. Next up is the Eden Court Theatre in Inverness on April 15th, complete tour details on the company's website. Dancers are: James MacGillivray, Toby Fitzgibbons, Ruth Janssen, Jori Kerremans, Naomi Murray, Rocco Vermijs, Solene Weinachter, Natalie Trewinnard, Joan Clevillé, Anna Kaszuba and Matthew Robinson. | 14 4 10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoVerve 2010 'Draw Your Mind' | We have been featuring Verve, the graduate dance company out of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds, for four years now and Verve 10 is here for 2010 with 5 new works and 11 new dancers. Just in-case you don't know what a graduate company is or does then allow us to explain. Before going out into the wide world of dance the major dance schools thought it would be a good idea to give graduates a good idea what to expect in the professional world. So each of the major schools has their own graduate company. The only major difference between Verve and a full on professional company is the dancers don't get paid, so when you think about it it's not really that different from the professional world (little bit of politics, keep it up! Ed!) This year the company have brought in Michael Schumacher (no, not that one the other one), Luis Lara Malvacías, David Zambrano, Laïla Diallo and Kathinka Walter, an eclectic mix, that much is certain. As ever the dancers are superb and the dance making is varied and challenging. For this feature we bring you an interview with two of the company's dancers, Elisabeth Connor and Lucy Starkey which includes material from the complete rep (video 1). We also have a single feature on 'Draw Your Mind' by Venezuelan dance maker David Zambrano (video 2) During the tour the company will perform 3-4 of the works for each show so make sure you check beforehand because the choreography you really want to see might not be on. The next show is on March 13th at Builth Wells, Wyeside Arts Centre touring throughout the year. Check the NSCD website for details. Verve 10 is perfromed by Robert Goodby, David Michel, Elina Karimaa, Elisabeth Connor, Letty Mitchell, Lucy Starkey, Kassie Starkey, Gemma Riley, Janice Keith, Joelle Greene and Natalie Duffield Moore. | 14 4 10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoJasmin Vardimon Company 'Lullaby' | A central point of the recent election in the UK was health care and hospitals in this much maligned land of ours. The politicians from all sides could have done themselves a big favour and taken a long hard look at 'Lullaby" from Jasmin Vardimon. This well established work brings us a sometimes disturbing, sometimes funny, but mostly insightful look into hospitals, medical treatment and the relationships between doctor and patient and tells us there is more to fear on the wards than MRSA. Lullaby features some superb physical work from the dancers along with innovative (and we do mean innovative) use of video projection and live camera work. The show is also in two half's with an interval in between so you can go get an ice cream or a piece of fruit or something! The promotional words for this work tell us the following; "Set in a hospital landscape, Lullaby explores our relationship with illness and hospitalisation and the effect it has on these living with it on a daily basis. New and innovative video technology is combined with dark humour, original text and live action to create this thought provoking, multi-layered show." Our video feature brings you seven minutes from 4 sections of the full show. You can see more video footage from Lullaby in our video interview with Jasmin Vardimon, link over to the right. Lullaby is performed by; Mafalda Deville, Kath Duggan, Luke Burrough, Leon Baugh, Fernanda Prata with choreography by Jasmin Vardimon and music/sound design by Ohad Fishof. The show is coming to the end of its touring life, Lullaby premiered in 2003, but you can still catch the live show until the end of June this year after which it will be put to bed for a while. Touring details are available in the listings or by visiting the company's website. | 14 4 10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoMotionhouse Dance Theatre 'Scattered' | What can we say about Motionhouse Dance Theatre that hasn't already been written? Well, probably quite a lot since our book 'Motionhouse The Untold Story, Living The Dream with Very Little Cash' couldn't find a publisher. Having previously toured the country with works involving scaffolding ('Volatile'), mountains of sand ('Perfect'), too many objects for words ('Driven') and huge diggers ('Road to the Beach') the company have decided to make things easy for themselves this time out by touring with a giant half pipe ramp made out of fibre glass! 'Scattered' is all about water which thankfully remains mostly virtual and there are no silly 'Flashdance' moments to be seen. The aforementioned ramp also acts as a projection screen for numerous motion graphics all with a water theme. When all goes well (which is 99% of the time) the dancers interact with said graphics to good effect. Motionhouse say this much of 'Scattered'; "Scattered combines Motionhouse's trademark highly physical dance theatre and mesmerizing aerial imagery with film and graphics, to create a unique visual performance event. Performed on a huge curved floor (think of a half pipe), which disappears skywards upstage, Scattered uses projection technology to create a world in which the dancers move in, on and through the image. Scattered delves into the majesty and savagery of water, a fundamental force in our lives as seven dancers plunge into an ocean, tumble down a waterfall, gasp with thirst under a scorching sun and slide on an avalanche to a frozen landscape of arctic beauty. In Scattered Motionhouse are creating a startling interaction between film and live performance, where dancers glide in the air or rapidly move around the space using aerial silks and harnesses." The work continues touring throughout the year alongside its smaller, more portable, little brother entitled 'Underground'. Check the company's website for touring information. 'Scattered' is performed by Junior Cunningham, Phillip Stummer, Claire Benson, Olivia Quayle, Alistair Stewart, Laura Peña Nuñez and Giorgio de Carolis with music by Sophy Smith and Tim Dickinson. | 11 3 10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoOpen Heart Productions 'God's Garden' | When last we featured the work of Arthur Pita it was wrapped in the cloak that was Bare Bones Dance Company with the '5 Man Show'. This time out Mr Pita has cut loose with a full evenings work entitled 'God's Garden'. Based on the biblical parable 'The Prodigal Son' (or the 'Lost Son') this work brings that story into a more modern era with a few twists, some live music, comedy and a light seasoning of Portuguese heritage (Arthur Pita is Portuguese). The man himself explains the proceeding far better than we can in our interview with him (video 1) and you can catch a nice slice of the work itself in Video 2, just get clicking above. In terms of press speak we have this much; "Arthur Pita's new full-length work, God's Garden (based on the parable of The Prodigal Son) brings to life the intensity and drama of rustic village life through dance theatre, live fado music, design by designer Jean-Marc Puissant and a cast whose ages range from 26 to 82! Set high on a hill looking over the sea lies the magnificent village of Porto Moniz, Madeira. The golden boy of the Costa family flees on his wedding day, jilting his faithful bride in order to sow his wild oats. However, when the prodigal son returns, there is much for his family to celebrate....and though the jilted bride's tears water a hungry garden, a wronged woman must take her revenge!" 'God's Garden' is performed by Diana Payne-Myers, Jose Manuel Figueira, Lorena Randi, Nuno Silva and Valentina Golfieri with live music by Phil King. The work takes to the stage next at the Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House in London on February 11-13 and continues touring throughout the year. | 71 | VideoTero Saarinen 'BlueLady' [Revisited] | Something a little bit different here in the shape of Finnish dancer and choreographer Tero Saarinen with the re-staging of a work by Carolyn Carlson from the 1980's. If you're a dance student and you shudder at the thought of performing a solo for a few minutes in front of your teachers or your class then spare a thought for Mr Saarinen who takes to the stage for no less than seventy minutes all on his own for this piece. The work was originally a solo for a female dancer but in the spirit of experimentation Ms Carlson has handed the work to Mr Saarinen who runs his own company in Helsinki. The company have this much to say about the work; "Carolyn Carlson's legendary solo Blue Lady (1983), has touched thousands of spectators around the world with it's unforgettable images. It is a fascinating gallery of female portraits spanning the space of one life - a tribute to maternity and mysterious Venice. Today the solo is being handed on to Tero Saarinen, the charismatic Finnish choreographer and dancer. Blue Lady [Revisited] offers precious, radiant moments that touch the soul and remain imprinted on the heart. The premiere of this version received standing ovations in Lyon last autumn." Our feature includes an interview with Terro Saarinen as well as material from the work itself performed as part of the Coda Dance Festival in Oslo, Norway in October last year. | 72 | VideoRetina Dance Company 'Antipode' | Retina Dance Company return to Article19 for the third time with their new show 'Antipode' . The company is also celebrating their 15th anniversary this year which is a really long time in this business that we call show (who calls it that? Ed!) 'Antipode' itself is performed by 5 male dancers and explores the themes of "polar opposites" which is, in fact, what the word antipode actually means! This work also comes with live music composed and performed by Joris Vanvinckenroye who plays a mean double bass. The company have this much to say about the work; "Antipode takes its initiation from innate polar opposites in and around the human body. As human beings we are constantly being challenged by opposition, even verticality commits us to engage with gravity, significance, magnitude and energy. How do we counteract the force of gravity and how do we survive in a world of other people and objects, in an unmistakable web and game of opposites? The five individuals share the same stage but are on their own journey, with no shared goals and no fear, challenging their own physicality. They collide, caress, fight, play and reject as they stampede along their own pathway. Quirky solos interrupt feisty duets and athletic group work." Included in our feature is an interview with Belgian dance maker and company AD Filip Van Huffel where we cover such topics as being Belgian, working with live music and why we, here in TheLab™ were not invited to the 15th anniversary party! (you had better not have asked him that! Ed!) 'Antipode' is performed by Robert Guy, Steven Martin, Matthew Slater and Brian Tjon Tjauw Liem with music by Joris Vanvinckenroye. The work continues touring throughout this year so check the company's web site for further details. | 5 2 10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoCristina Caprioli/ccap 'Cicadaremix' | Article19's second feature from the October dance festival that was Coda in Norway features dance maker Cristina Caprioli and company (ccap) with 'Cicadaremix', a word that is surprisingly difficult to remember how to spell! The Swedish dance company (a first on Article19) brings us a deliberate and relentless display of neo-classical shenanigans. Mixing together contemporary and classical dancers, a dangerous business at the best of times, with some off the wall music for 55 minutes of pure dance. No plot, no story and no set. Just movement, music and top notch dancers, that's the way we like it here in TheLab™ The company has this much to say about their work " green dresses and grey out-fits, dancers in line, dancers across. dancing straight forward and in between, by2, by3, by4. glitch, loops and edges, modulation of tone, dissonance, ruffles, and virtuosity. point-work thrills and bare-footed groove, cicadaremix brings classical ballet dancers together with ccap's contemporary dancers in a jointed stylistic extravagance." 'Cicadaremix' is performed by Agnieszka Dlugoszewska, Katarina Eriksson, Annika Hyvärinen, Johanna Klint, Rafael Sady, Eytan Sivak and Kristine Slettevold with music by Alva Noto, Kevin Volans and Pixel. The company are still plotting their next moves (pun very much intended) for 2010 but you can follow their tour plans via the company website which is in English just in-case your Swedish is not quite up to speed! | 11 1 10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoErna Omarsdottir 'IBM 401 A Users Manual' | There are times when you start to forget why you liked dance to begin with. Too many performances seem to sap all the enthusiasm you ever had for the art form. Then there are those pieces of work that bring it all rushing back and you remember just why you love this art form so much. IBM401 A Users Manual performed by Erna Ómarsdóttir and Jóhan Jóhannson is one such piece of work. It may have the most improbable title you ever heard but this piece, performed by the duo based in Reykjavik Iceland, is a powerhouse of superb solo movement and outstanding choreography from Erna Ómarsdóttir and excellent live music from Jóhan Jóhannson. The work was performed as part of the [8-Tension] series for young choreographers at Impulstanz in Vienna. For Article19 it was the best performance on show by a long way and this was in a festival featuring DV8. It is very difficult to do this 35 minute piece justice in the 4 minutes and 30 seconds we have for you here so if you get the chance to see this piece live then we suggest that you take the opportunity, you will either love it or hate it but our money is on the former of those two options. For more information about IBM401 you can contact Johann Johannsson or Esther Welger-Barboza using the email links below. This feature was updated on December 20th 2003 with a new section of video. | 75 | VideoUltima Vez 'Spiegel' | If you get a certain amount of deja vue while watching this video feature of Ultima Vez then fret not because not only is Spiegel a retrospective on some of the company's work from the last two decades but a lot of the movement style you see here has found its way into hundreds of works by many companies over the years. Ultima Vez and its founder, Wim Vandekeybus, pioneered the movement style rather simplistically entitled 'Eurocrash' back in the day. The term 'crash' does no justice to the obvious skills of the dancers though. Yes they do hurl themselves around with an incredible amount of energy but their relationship with the floor and how they get down there is precisely controlled, crashing has nothing to do with it. If ever there was a work to emphasise the difference between classical and contemporary then this is it. 'Spiegel', which means 'mirror', is a composite work with sections taken from 'What the Body Does Not Remember', 'Immer Das Selbe Gelogen', 'Bereft of a Blissful Union', '7 For a Secret never to be told', 'In Spite of Wishing and Wanting' and 'Inasmuch as Life is Borrowed'. The company speaks of the work thus; "Twenty years after the première of What the Body Does Not Remember - and almost as many creations with changing international casts later - Wim Vandekeybus composes Spiegel, an evening with some remarkable scenes from his work. With nine dancers - performers who have already worked with the company as well as some newcomers - Wim Vandekeybus looks in the mirror. No simple collage, but a journey in search of the essence of his movement idiom. A retrospective of the energy and emotions at the base of his creations. Together with the performers, Wim Vandekeybus explores his early works as well as more recent productions." Our seven minute clip includes the infamous brick throwing sequence from 'What the Body Does Not Remember'. Although the blocks appear to be made from some form of chalk-limestone composite, make no mistake, if one of the dancers gets hit then they are going home in an ambulance. 'Spiegel' is performed by Laura Aris, Elena Fokina, Robert M. Hayden, German Jauregui Allue, Jorge Jauregui Allue, Mala Kline, Thi-Mai Nguyen, Manuel Ronda and Helder Seabra. Choreography by Wim Vandekeybus and Music by Arno & Ad Cominotto, David Byrne, Thierry De May, Pierre Martins, Marc Ribbot and Peter Vermeersch. | 10 12 09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoPanta Rei 'We Fiction' | It has been more than 3 years since we last featured the goings on at one of Norway's brightest dance companies. With their latest touring efforts we have 'Private Rite' (video 1) from Canadian dancesmith Hélène Blackburn and 'WeFiction' (video 2) created by the company. With Panta Rei we have a company that's all about the movement and custom built music, provided by Nathaniel Reed. Yes we have some themes and variations, and adorable mini-pianos in Ms Blackburn's work that reminded us of Schroeder from 'Peanuts' but Panta Rei is old school and we, here in TheLab™, like that! The company have this much to say about their work; "Dette er en koreografi som har vokst fram i nær dialog med danserne. Right about now you're wishing you had paid a lot more attention in those Norwegian classes at school right? We're all in Europe kids so let's get used to it! The premiere of these two works took place on October 22nd at the Coda Dance Festival in Oslo, Norway. | 78 | VideoPair Dance 'Rush' | Pair Dance, helmed by dancer/choreographer Harriet Macauley and soundsmith Richard Leonard, last appeared on Article19 about eighteen months ago with the superbly crafted 'Silent Steps' one of the highlights of the Big Mission festival. That particular work is soon to be retired but the company have two new pieces in the pipeline for future touring. A solo entitled 'Insideout' (video 1) performed by Ms Macauley and a work in progress called 'Rush'(video 2), a trio, for three dancers.............. (you're fired! Ed!) 'Insideout', the solo for one dancer (stop it! Ed!), was created in the frozen wasteland of Edmonton in Canada earlier this year when Ms Macauley was a visiting artist. Ok, so it's not a wasteland but it is frozen, literally! 'Rush', the trio (don't do it! Ed!) is a work in progress, for the moment, but will grow over the coming months into a full blown piece of work. The company have this much to say about it; "In the evocation of commuter chaos, garbled speech cloaks movement with contextual explanation. Confined labours take on the realism of a packed tube at rush hour. The distinctive, collaborative style was celebrated by an invitation to premier this new work at the John Ryan Theatre, New York as part of Wave Rising Series. Created with the support of Swindon Dance and performed at the Siobhan Davis Dance Studio." Touring is over for the moment but the company will be back in the new year. What we have here is a striking mix of well crafted movement and some animated background visuals that really do work without causing the poor audience to seek medical treatment upon leaving the theatre. Each work covers a very different theme from the pure movement aesthetic of 'Switch' [Video 1] to the effects of conflict on the human mind in 'Listen' [Video 2]. The company says of these works; "Switch draws inspiration from ancient practices and their relevance to our lives now. Dancing from the heart, ACE will pull energy from its oldest, purest source and transform it into something fresh, new and pulsating - flipping on its head the notion of tradition and the ancient. Set in a black and white space, this is an exciting new collaborative work by ACE's directors Gail and Ian Parmel with choreographers Douglas Thorpe (ex Phoenix Dance Company) and Andile Sotiya. Switch promises to be an exciting blend of sophisticated dance, music and visuals, accompanied by a robust and agile cast of six international and UK based dancers." | 82 | VideoMK Raw 09 Jazz | MK Raw is back for 2009 and once again we have a collection of three strong works from those crazy kids at the annual youth dance program right here on Article19 in miniaturised video form. Lest you be unfamiliar with the goings on in England's darkest city let us enlighten you. Some 50 or so young dancers gather in Milton Keynes and spend 10 days working with professional dance makers on three distinct styles of dance. You only get to play in one group though, either Jazz, Contemporary or Street. Each year there is a theme running through the work and this time out it was "Why do I dance" or words to that effect. Following the 10 day stretch a performance is given at the vast Milton Keynes Theatre and the rest, as they always say, is history. For three years in a row we reckon MK Raw is by far the best youth dance project around simply because they produce great work, full stop. If it's not about that dear readers then, we ask you, what is it about? Choreographers for MK Raw are Nikki O'Hara, Helen Parlor and Andy Instone on Jazz, Contemporary and Street respectively. | 85 | Video2Faced Dance 'Still Breathing' | We have seen, many times, an attempt to fuse together street/break dancing and contemporary work into a recognisable show. Most of the time it fails for one reason or another, has 2Faced Dance figured out the magic formula? The all male dance company, helmed by Tamsin Fitzgerald, has brough 'Still Breathing' to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The Zoo Southside, competing with DanceBase and the Traverse for the home of dance shows in Edinburgh, is the venue for the show. 2Faced began ten years ago with professional status coming along in 2004 and true to their claim 'Still Breathing' is a mix of forms and we have to say, here in TheLab™, that it works a lot better than most, mainly because the dancers are top drawer. Also on the "Spooky but True" front; The company is based in Hereford, England, the home of the SAS! Coincidence? They say of this work; "STILL BREATHING will break new ground for visceral contemporary dance company 2FaCeD DaNcE and pioneering Artistic Director Tamsin Fitzgerald, whose original juxtaposition of contemporary and street dance has won acclaim across the nation. Playing Edinburgh's top dance venue at Zoo Southside from 7th-31st August 2009, the show is sharper, sexier and more soulful show than ever before, promising new heights for the company's legacy of critically acclaimed Edinburgh sell-outs." Dancers: Johnny Autin, Nathan French, Dan Lowenstein, Mathew Chambers, Taylor Benjamin, Robby Graham and Jake Nwongu 'Still Breathing' is running at the Zoo Southside in Edinburgh until August 31st then touring around the country. | 86 | VideoScottish Dance Theatre 'A Visitation' | Continuing the theme of "it's all gone a bit Norwegian" Scottish Dance Theatre's latest work 'A Visitation' was crafted for the company by Norwegian dance maker Christel Johannessen. This work is a bit of departure for SDT, but not that much of a departure, as the company meanders into the world of storytelling with ghosts, mannequins and all manner of strange goings on. It's all a bit spooky! Here in TheLab™ we reckon this work would look a treat filmed in an old Scottish castle on halloween with thunderous local weather brought in for added effect. SDT say of this work; "A Visitation is the first commission for SDT from Ina Christel Johannessen, one of the most influential and inspiring creative forces in Norwegian contemporary dance. The work is inspired by the vivid descriptive writing of Bruno Schultz and The Street of Crocodiles, a collection of his short stories and realised in collaboration with designer, Kathrine Tolo, drawing on the interior designs of Rennie Mackintosh. A Visitation features 5 wooden mannequins, 5 ghosts and 5 people in a lost and forgotten room. Haunting work: literally." So there you have it. We were planning an on camera interview with the company's AD, Janet Smith, but time constraints meant that couldn't happen unfortunately. Maybe next time! Dancers for 'A Visitation' are : Toby Fitzgibbons, Ruth Janssen, Jori Kerremans, Naomi Murray, Rocco Vermijs, Solene Weinachter, Natalie Trewinnard, Anna Kszuba, Mathew Robinson and Joan Clevillé. SDT will be performing the work in Edinburgh at Zoo Southside until August 30th with touring to follow. Check their website for more details | 5 9 09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoMotionhouse Dance theatre 'Scattered' [preview] | As promised we have a preview feature for you from Motionhouse Dance Theatre and their ongoing rehearsals for their brand new work 'Scattered' which will premiere in October. Just like we told you in our photo feature early last month the work features a giant ramp, placed at the back of the stage, as well as bungee assisted slings that pull the dancers up and down said ramp whether they like or not. Our feature includes an interview with the company's Artistic Director, Kevin Finnan and three of the company's dancer, Laura Pena Nunez, Junior Cunningham and Philipp Stummer. During the interview they discuss the work, its challenges and how it will evolve during MDT's very long tour. The company say of this work: "Scattered combines Motionhouse's trademark highly physical dance theatre and mesmerizing aerial imagery with film and graphics, to create a unique visual performance event. Performed on a huge curved floor, which disappears skywards upstage, Scattered uses multiple projection technology to create a world in which the dancers move in, on and through the image. Scattered delves into the beauty and absurdity of water in different elements. Seven dancers dive into a moving stream, wrestle a raging tide and slide on an avalanche to a frozen landscape of arctic beauty." The dancers for 'Scattered' are: Luara Pena Nunez, Philipp Stummer, Junior Cunningham, Olivia Quayle, Fernando Pasquini, Claire Benson and Alasdair Stewart 'Scattered' bows on October 2nd at Warwick Arts Centre then goes on to tour nationally, probably until the end of time! | 22 7 09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoTilted Productions 'Trapped' | Maresa von Stockert is not a dance maker to be trifled with. Ms Stockert can craft a movement, write a line or two and direct some of the best dance/physical theatre around and all before lunch, so be careful. When last we featured Tilted Productions it was way back in 2004 with 'Adventures in Black and Green' a sublime duet featuring the company's signature top drawer writing and performances. 'Trapped' is a very different work, in terms of scale and story, but it is no less impressive in every respect. With minimal set and exposition the company create a convincing world of pervasive surveillance, government interference and subtle intimidation. It speaks of both today's world, covered in CCTV cameras and government snooping, and the almost comical behaviour of the East German security services before the Berlin Wall came down. We, here in TheLab™, are also happy to report the return on Russell Raisey who's voice featured heavily in 'Adventures in Black and Green'. Tilted say of this work; "Imagine a place where thoughts are overheard and dreams are monitored; where intimate letters get scanned and a warped sense of reality rules over reason. In our surveillance-obsessed times, TrAPPED explores notions of personal freedom. Unfolding like a film, TrAPPED tells the stories of five characters in a surreal Kafkaesque landscape. Subtly, a commentary emerges on the CCTV-laden world of today and the bygone era of the German Democratic Republic." The company's final show of the current tour is at the Exeter Northcott Theatre on 24th June followed by an 8 performance run at this year's Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. Further touring expected in the Autumn. 'Trapped' is performed by Lise Manavit, Amy Bell, Jake Ingram-Dodd, Simon Palmer and Phil Williams with music by Jeremy Cox. | 24 6 09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoLost Dog 'The Rain Parade' | The end of the world is not going to be pretty. Finding a parking space is going to be a lot easier but on the whole things are going to be rather unpleasant, especially if you like social networking or doing anything that involves more than two people! Lost Dog are exploring just such a theme in their duet 'The Rain Parade' performed for the last time on its current tour at the Lowry Theatre in Manchester. In telling the story the company use the classic cinematic "MacGuffin" principal. We're not told what has caused civilization to come crashing down or where all the people have gone. 'The Rain Parade' concerns itself with how the two central characters deal with the situation and the mysterious folks who appear to be watching them. The company say of this work; This blackly comic and provocative new duet looks forward to the end of the world. Mankind's last three survivors are left trying to make sense of what happened and piece together some kind of coherent history - but they can't remember much and they can't agree on anything. Is this really all there is to show for mankind's great civilization? For the moment 'The Rain Parade' is on a break from touring but may be back later in the year. The company themselves are plotting new works and they should see the light of day in the Autumn. Keep your eyes on their website for more information. | 90 | VideoThe Tell Woman | The average hard-core dance maker has more than enough trouble making work that will engage the imagination of a regular, skeptical adult. Imagine if your life's work involved coming up with ideas to engage the minds of people that paid attention to everything you said and everything you did! Yes, we're talking about children. You know you're on to a good thing with a show like 'The Tell Woman' when, upon hearing the central character say "mummy and daddy are horrible", you get an audible cry of disbelief from the assembled audience of youngsters. 'The Tell Woman', aimed at 4-10 year olds, is the story of the keeper of all stories (straight away we love it) and her endless struggle to keep those stories from the forces of darkness. "Evil Confuser Hands", "Sproings" and "Snufflers" all come along for the ride as "Sam" fights the good fight in search of a compelling yarn or two. The company say of this show; "The Tell Woman is a visually stunning theatre show combining dance, puppetry and sound to create a fantastic fairy tale for the under tens. Funny, mysterious and sometimes a bit yucky, The Tell Woman draws on children's own experiences to ask: where do stories come from? The world of The Tell Woman is a magical place full of weird creatures, some friendly, and some not so friendly. These creatures live in a land made from the enormous skirt of The Tell Woman. Here they come and go, appear and disappear, through folds and flaps, tunnels and trapdoors." 'The Tell Woman' is performed by Nikky Smedley, Emma Burns, Holly Denoon, Sioda Martin and Bryony Perkins with music by Kathy Hinde and Mathew Olden. | 30 5 09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoDOT504 'Holdin' Fast' | If you want your dance/physical theatre edgy then look no further than mainland Europe. There's a lot of angst, a lot of pent up energy and they've got the skills to pull the whole thing off. Enter, stage-left, DOT504 from the Czech Republic. Formed in 2006 the company have created and toured several works. 'Holdin' Fast' is coming to the end of its touring life for now but is a striking example of the company's craft. We have no idea why they are called DOT504, we could ask of course but there has to be some mystery left in the universe! If you like your movement grounded and taught then this is the company for you. All those hours in contact improvisation class will pay off if you persevere. This company provide a masterclass in just how two or three dancers work together sans "awkward elbows". A sizable amount of the spoken word (in both Czech and English depending on where you see the show) adds a great deal to the mix. Using press speak the company tell us this; "Three couples in changing possibilities of sexual relationships. A dream of desire and dependency, where dancers´ bodies fall under the pressure of the other, to bear testimony to passion, dynamics and the intensity of relationships." Short and to the point just the way we like it. The last scheduled performance is in Dundee at The Rep Theatre on May 19. After the that the company will be touring new work around Europe. Keep an eye on their website for details. 'Holdin' Fast' is performed by Helena Arenbergerová, Michaela Ottová, Lenka Vágnerová, Petr Opavský, Pavel Mašek, Daniel Raček with Choreography by Jozef Fruček & Linda Kapetanea. | 20 4 09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoTavaziva Dance 'My Friend Robert' | Zimbabwean dance maker Bawren Tavaziva and Tavaziva Dance come to Article19 with two works from their brand new touring production featuring four pieces of work. Three of them new and one them, 'Silent Steps', created by Harriet Macauley for her own company Pair Dance. Tavaziva have been up running now for the last four years and the current tour brings a fair bit of diversity in terms of tone and content. We have some out and out dance making with 'Kenyan Athlete' and some heavy political comment from 'My Friend Robert'. The other two works that form the complete our are 'Sinful Intimacies' and the aforementioned 'Silent Steps' First up we have 'Kenyan Athlete' of which the press speak tell us; "This new group work takes it's starting point from the expression "the sun is beautiful people" that inspired Bawren's highly successful Beautiful People for the Without Walls festivals consortium. Kenyan Athlete is set to a fast-paced soundtrack, exploring the beauty and physicality of Kenyan people and their surroundings." It might be hard to believe but Robert Mugabe, the "sort of" President of Zimbabwe, was once a hero to many of his countrymen before the power went straight to his head and his country went on a seemingly endless downward spiral. 'My Friend Robert' takes a long hard look at Mr Mugabe and the havoc he has brought upon Zimbabwe. Politics is a tough subject to cover with a dance work but Tavaziva bring brevity, clarity and class to the stage. Press wise we have this: "Bawren draws on his personal experiences and memories of growing up in the newly-independent Zimbabwe of Robert Mugabe, a leader of promise and vision, adored by his people. So what went wrong? Where do the visionary dreams, empowerment, redistribution of resources and flag-waving shade off into megalomania, economic meltdown, corruption and violence? Bawren's latest group work offers a deeply personal comment on the challenges facing Africa today. " 'My Friend Robert' and 'Kenyan Athlete' are performed by: Amanda Lewis, Anna Watkins, Ingrid Abbot, Everton Wood and Gerrard Martin. The companies next performance is at the Carriage Works Theatre in Leeds on March 17th touring through to the end of March. Full details on the company's website. | 17 3 09 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoVerve 09 'Niners' | Sometimes when you go to the theatre to see some new work all you're really looking for is the opportunity to see someone enjoying their craft. We often use the term "dance maker" on Article19. We like it because it suggest to us, here in TheLab™, people diligently working to piece together movement, phrase by phrase like a Swiss watchmaker building a Tag-Heur. That's what we have here with Verve 09, a group of dancers and dance makers enjoying their craft. Verve is a graduate company, based at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds, but they could probably give most seasoned dance companies a run for their money. For their tour Verve have a collection of 6 new works by Milan Kozánek, Filip Van Hufel, Glenn Wilkinson, Katie Baldwin, Jennifer-Lynne Crawford and Leanne Pike. For you, our dear readers, we have 'Niners' (video one) by Glenn Wilkinson and 'This is not a love song' (video two) by Filip Van Hufel. During their long tour the company will perform a mixed bill of various combination's of the six pieces. for 'Niners' the press speak says; Divided into nine equal sections the choreography derives its inspiration from the 'Family of Essences'. Each section of the sound score corresponds with a colour; the movement is a direct response to the sound and the colour it represents. This gives each segment its own particular mood, lending the whole an almost disjointed yet united structure. 'This is not a love story' has this to say; In This is not a love song eleven dancers meet, interact, play and struggle. They are assembled on a physical playground, performing abstract movement material layered with theatrical intention and extreme physicality. Dancers are: Christina Robinson, Jaeyun Kim, Jessica Hothersall, Jimin Park, Judith Clijsters, Kristina Alleyne, Leigh Pearce, Nathalie Wahlberg, Nicholas Keegan, Peri Warren and Robert Goodby. Verve will be touring through July. Their next show is at the Mermaid Arts Centre on March 7th followed by the Showroom Theatre in Chichester on March 11th. | 96 | VideoMad Dogs Dance Theatre 'Beast' | With a name like Mad Dogs Dance Theatre you can throw out any expectations of demure, wafty dance making. 'Beast' is a good old fashion throw back to the days of Euro Crash, when choreography was, to be blunt, just a little bit brutal. It's hardly surprising considering the theme of the work which is all about rage and what happens when it takes over and the beast of the title is released. The style of dance making is a little bit surprising however since Douglas Thorpe, the creator, has spent his time working with the likes of Arthur Pita, Javier Du Frutos and Henri Oguike, non of whom you could describe as being brutal in their dance making in any way! The work was derived from an extended residency at Yorkshire Dance and is, as yet, not a full blown touring work. If and when it does we will let you now but for the moment you should bug Yorkshire Dance in Leeds if you want some more information about this particular creation. 'Beast' is also a good illustration to dance students about why you need to do your cardio work. If you don't, you're never going to make it to end of a work like this. It would be great to see it extended and fully fleshed out, a great addition to the mix in the UK's wacky world of dance. 'Beast' is performed by Lisa Welham, Kevin Turner, Ana Lujan Snchez, Tiia Ourilla, Anthony Missen and Dane Hurst with music by Jaydev Mistry. | 2 2 09 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoCandoco 'Still" | Candoco Dance Company kick off 2009 with their new works by Hofesh Shechter and Nigel Charnock. An interesting mix of the new and old, a bit of calming chaos versus the slightly unhinged! We all know about Mr Shechter, if you don't then where have you been for the last 12 months? With Candoco he's showing a different side though with 'The Perfect Human'. It's a more subtle work that never raises its voice beyond a whisper but retains some of the ubiquitous dance makers sense of humour. In press speak we have this; "The piece starts by presenting us with the perfect human and ends with an anxious getaway with helicopter sounds looming above. Apart from its dense character other strong aspects of this piece are the contagious music - which alternates between rhythmic drums and lyrical classical music - and the relentless movement that is carried throughout." Nigel Charnock on the other hand is, after 20 years in the dance world, still raising hell with his signature blend of comedy, loud music, bad language and sharp movement and the audience, to their credit, still love it. It's appropriate then that his work for Candoco is called, simply enough, 'Still'. Press jargon describes this work thus; "In the piece Still audiences get the chance to experience a very theatrical style of contemporary dance. Still is anything but. Nigel Charnock's patchwork of ideas takes the dancers in a constant whirl guided by his eclectic choice of music. There are microphones and music boxes, knickers and bondage, love and death." 'Still' and 'The Perfect Human' are performed by; Annie Hanauer, Chris Owen, Bettina Carpi, Victoria Malin, Elinor Baker, Darren Anderson and Cornelia Kip Lee. Candoco will continue touring through to April. Their next show is at The Brewhouse in Taunton on January 29th. | 99 | VideoScottish School of Contemporary Dance 'Hard Rain' PT Two | Almost during the last breath of 2008 we, here in TheLab™, caught our final show of 2008, the end of year show from the Scottish School of Contemporary Dance featuring the 3rd year and degree level students from the Dundee based school. SSCD took a slightly different path with an evening length work 'Hard Rain', running to almost 90 minutes, choreographed by the schools director Peter Royston and former student Sara Blanc and taking full advantage of the schools cavernous performance space. As you would expect with two choreographers there is a mix and match of creative ideas going on in here. You have theatrical set pieces, straight up dance making and more besides all tied together with a mix of pre-recorded and live music the latter of which was provided by local band Whiteheath. SSCD excels at giving its students the chance to get their teeth into a lot of choreography and prove their performing prowess to a live audience. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't (as with most evening length works) but the dancers hold their own and show a tremendous amount of skill throughout. Also, how many times do you see a dance school performing with excellent live music? Or live music at all for that matter? Obviously there will be no touring (SSCD does have a graduate touring company called The Space Cadets though!) but keep your eyes on the schools website for future shows. Dancers. | 101 | VideoDance Theatre Ireland 'Under the Roof' | Part two of our feature from Dance Theatre Ireland's new touring repertory is 'Under the Roof' created by South Korean dance maker In-young Sohn as part of the collaboration between DTI and Now Dance. This works shares a very similar dynamic to the first piece of the evening 'Parallel Horizons' and includes dancers from both companies interacting as if they had been working together their entire working lives! Classy performances all round. The work really does need to be seen live to appreciate the expansive nature of the thing. Music is, as with the other piece, performed live by a small ensemble of musicians. DTI say of 'Under the Roof'; "Under the Roof represents home, a place where we rest, wrap our solitude, or can be soothed and revitalized. In the course of one day the work unfolds exposing the nature of our collective and individual spirits. Under the Roof is where we learn to share (or not) and where it's possible to be supported. From under the roof we go out into the world, and from under the roof we learn it is possible to achieve the impossible, we receive our sustenance. What other things happen under that roof?" 'Under the Roof' is performed by Lise Manavit, Jazmin Chiodi, Alexandre Iseli, Byung Hwa Kim, Jon Morley, Min Young Park, Ju Jin Shin and Seung Kwan Yoo. Music is by RII Woo Lee performed by Nick Bailey, II Woo Lee, Bo-mi Kim and Rory Pierce. DTI are currently touring the Republic of Ireland for the next month. Check their website for updates on 2009 performances. NB: The programme credits this work to Dance Now. | 102 | VideoDance Theatre Ireland 'Parallel Horizons' | Almost two years ago to the day we last featured Dance Theatre of Ireland (DTI) with in house works from the company directors Loretta Yurick and Robert Connor, Charles Linehan bringing up the rear with his outside influence. This time out DTI have hooked up with Now Dance from South Korea for a new double bill. 'Parallel Horizons' is the in house part of the puzzle and the first part of our double feature. Created by Loretta Yurick and Robert Connor the piece features dancers from both DTI and Now Dance. It's a swirling mass of dance making with dancers taking advantage of the entire stage as they move in intricate patterns in and around one another accompanied all the while by some excellent live music (a rarity these days for contemporary dance). DTI prove without doubt that they are very much the hidden gem of contemporary dance in Europe (one of many we might add). Since the company are based in the Republic of Ireland overseas touring, even just across the Irish Sea to the mainland UK, is a huge expense. If someone at the British Council could, let's say, do their job then DTI might be able to make it over the water and share this work and 'Under the Roof' with the UK public at large! Make it so! DTI say of this creation; "In beginning the work of Parallel Horizons for this project, we were influenced by several things: the common experiences in the history of both the cultures (both have been occupied, both have a North/South division, both have experienced separation). Musically, we wanted to draw strongly on elements of Irish and Korean music, sounds and instrumentation. We identified with strong Korean and Irish rhythms and noticed as well the sense of melancholy or sadness that is common to both Korean and Irish music. We share this in our musical heritage....and both the sadness and the strong rhythms are part of this work. The rhythms are strong, the people are strong. Resilient. That's what that means to us. Soft and strong both. Both countries share a rich poetic history. On our first trip to Korea we read Ko Un one of Korea's major poets and we took inspiration from a particular book of short poems by Ko Un translated in English as "Flowers of a Moment". There are several poems that inspired this work, one particular poem that influenced a section we made for the women, they are on cushions... "If I Lie down I'll be done for...an ailing animal desperately staying standing all day long. It's been that kind of a day in the world, my dear." Don't we all know this feeling? We wanted to visit the interior. The survivor. And show the face of it. The music is composed with elements of traditional instrumentation placed in a contemporary context. In some cases the music was created in response to the dance, in other places the music informed the mood of the dance. The music supports the dance, and deeply influences the way the audience experiences the dance; much in the way that image and sound work in cinema." 'Parallel Horizons' is performed by Lise Manavit, Jazmin Chiodi, Alexandre Iseli, Byung Hwa Kim, Jon Morley, Min Young Park, Ju Jin Shin and Seung Kwan Yoo. Music is by Rory Pierce performed by Nick Bailey, II Woo Lee, Bo-mi Kim and Rory Pierce. DTI are currently touring the Republic of Ireland for the next month. | 103 | VideoGalili Dance 'Upper Room' & 'Fragile' | First time feature alert here on Article19 as Galili Dance from Holland, run by Israeli dance maker Itzik Galili, bring not one, or two, or even three pieces of work for us here in TheLab™. You can catch 'Peeled' (the fourth work) performed by Diversions Dance Company, created by Mr Galili, over there on the right and 'six' is available in a video feature all of its own as well. In this feature we bring you two short segments of video. The first is the 'The Upper Room Project' a "specially crafted" version of a solo piece; "developed through a residency with Merseyside Dance Initiative and Galili Dance. For four days in September this year, six locally based dancers worked with Itzik and Helena to develop the piece. Normally a solo, this evening sees the work performed as a quintet for the first time." The second work featured is a striking duet called 'Fragile' that takes place almost entirely within a thin strip of light on the center of the stage. Some old school, unhurried dance making is in evidence as the two dancers move smoothly in and around one another. It's the kind of choreography that makes many a professional wince because you know how hard it is. 'The Upper Room Project' is performed by Holli-Ann Coleman, Fenfen Huang, Jenna Jungbluth, Jenny Rees and Jennifer Smith with choreography by Itzik Galili and music by Percossa. 'Fragile' is performed by Natalia Rodina and Leonardi Centi with Music by Gavin Bryars You can catch this work live in the UK at the Taliesin Arts Centre in Swansea, Wales. The company perform in Holland on December 6th. Check their website for details. | 3 11 08 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoGalili Dance 'Six' | Our second feature from Galili Dance of Holland features the work 'Six'. As you might expect there are six dancers in the work but also, as you would not expect at all, 5 dancers pushing large black boards around. The boards have the effect of breaking the space up into smaller segments so the dancers can appear or disappear at will. A signature part of Itzik Galili's dance making involves precision timing to the music which is in evidence throughout this piece. Also in evidence is the superb lighting design that gives Peter Mumford (of Siobhan Davies Dance Company fame) a run for his money. Many dance works are ruined by poor lighting but in the Dutch company's pieces the design is spot on (I sincerely hope that wasn't a pun? Ed!) As the company's own press blurb states, the dancers never stop, continuing to move throughout the 16 minute work, barely even pausing for breath. In press speak the company tells us this much; "Through an ever changing architectural 'modernist' landscape bursts human energy, warmth and earthy passion. The dancers move incessantly, playing with form, structure and time - a visually beautiful work to mesmerize and carry you far away. The accent is on the position of the individual in space. With this, Galili refers to two elemets often used in his work through different means - perspective and perception." You can catch this work live in the UK at the Taliesin Arts Centre in Swansea, Wales. The company perform in Holland on December 6th. Check their website for details 'six' is performed by Gaetano Badalamenti, Leonardo Centi, Arnaud Macquet, Marco Purcaro, Aimee Lagrange, Jahana Lemarchand, Natalie Rodina, Silvia Albanese Valle, Helena Volkov and Natalia Zinchenko with choreography by Itzik Galili. Music by Steve Reich. | 3 11 08 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoDiversions Dance Company 'Peeled' | Last time we featured Diversions Dance Company was back in 2006 with a feature from British Dance Edition in Leeds. This time out we caught up with them in Liverpool performing 'Peeled' created by Israeli (based in Holland) dance maker Itzik Galili. The work is best described, we think, as a relentless piece of choreography defined by some superb lighting design (by Mr Galili himself). As the dancers shift through the space they are guided, or so it appears, by blocks of light. It's all very reminiscent of a sliding puzzle game, giant size with live dancers. Exhibiting superb timing throughout the dancers weave their way through the illuminated puzzle piece with precision. Although the work is just 18 minutes long by the end the dancers are exhausted which illustrates just how tough this work is mentally and physically. The company say of this piece; "Peeled is a dynamic choreography for ten dancers. Coming from a subtext/solo about the search for self confidence which was developed through improvisation and provocative manipulation by dancer Jussi Nousiainen and Itzik Galili. Musical typewriters provide and insistent atmospheric backdrop as well as a powerful lighting plan. This latter accentuates space, scenarios and perception." At present there are no plans for any more performances of this work but keep your eye on the company's website for more touring details as we go into the new year. 'Peeled' is performed by; Lee Johnston, Karol Cysewski, Eleesha Drennan, Stefanos Bizas, Maria Hayday, Sun Hee Dieben, Yuval Lev, Viivi Keskinen, Riccardo Vitello and Nancy Nerantzi with choreography by Itzik Galili and music by Percossa. | 3 11 08 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoRosie Kay Dance Company 'Supernova' | For those of you that don't know a 'Supernova' occurs when stars (the planetary objects not those losers from American Idol), explode as they collapse in on themselves because they've used up all their fuel and there's nothing left but to go BANG! What has that got to do with this piece of dance making from Rosie Kay Dance Company? We, here in TheLab™, have no idea because we are especially dense when it comes to the deeper meanings of choreography, we shall leave it up to you, and your science teacher, to figure it out. Rest assured though that none of the dancers actually explode! Exploding stars and cosmic shenanigans aside what we have here is some solid old school dance making. That is; dancers, costumes, music, movement. As we always say, if in doubt, do that!. The company say of this astronomatological (that's not even a real word! Ed!) piece; "Taking inspiration from time, space, energy and matter, Rosie Kay translates huge cosmic ideas into the physical, the personal and the emotional. Supernova is a journey of five extraordinary female dancers who translate the macro into the micro sensations inside us all. A work of personal discovery, comment upon the state of the planet and dreams of the wider universe." 'Supernova' is currently under a warm blanket until touring resumes in the new year along with its sister work 'Double Points K'. Check the company website or your local arts listings, if you can find them to see when the work is coming to a theatre near you. The company's latest work keeps up a strong track record of outstanding dance making and the best collection of dancers currently in the wild. 'Yesterday' is both a collection of previous choreography, from works such as 'Lullaby', 'Park' and many more, as well as brand new and revised material for this work. The idea behind the piece is all part of their ten year anniversary as well as making a practical effort to create work that is more viable for touring internationally (to keep costs down). The company say of 'Yesterday'; "Yesterday features some of the most breathtaking duets, striking solos and iconic moments selected from the company's repertoire, reprised with new choreography and multi media integration. Contrasting flashes of daring athleticism with moments of touching beauty, Yesterday interweaves scenes of intimate and vulnerable tenderness with provocative and playful choreography, remaining as stirring and socially relevant as ever." Our video feature includes interviews with Jasmin Vardimon, director of the company, hence the name, and dancers Mafalda Deville and Luke Burrough. Of course we have extensive footage from the show itself for you to enjoy. Be warned, there is some gunfire in the show and although it's not scary on the video, when you're in the theatre it makes your heart skip more than a few beats! 'Yesterday' is performed by Paul Blackman, Luke Burrough, Tim Casson, Mafalda Deville, Christine Gouzelis, David Nondorf, YunKrung Song and Elena Stavropoulou. The company's next performance is at South Hill Park in Bracknell (which is a real place) on Thursday October 2nd before touring nationally. | 108 | VideoChase | It's that time of year again as MKT Raw 2008 comes back into view, just as summer slips over the horizon! MKT is short for Milton Keynes Theatre but that's about as catchy as something that's not really very catchy at all so you can understand the initials. Lest you be unfamiliar with the annual dance shenanigans that take place in the less than glorious city of Milton Keynes (just outside London for you non-UK folk) then let us remind you. Every year about 50-60 young people gather, some experienced, some not so much, and get split into three groups. Contemporary, Hip Hop and Jazz. They create work, over about ten days, based on a common theme and then perform that work in front of a live, very noisy audience at the superb Milton Keynes Theatre. This year the common theme was "The Movies" and we have; 'As I Journey Through' choreographed by Helen Parlor, 'CHASE (chãs)' with Nikki O'Hara at the helm and 'Love Dance. Funk Life' created by Andy Instone. What makes this show stand out, as it did last year, is the undisputed quality of the dance making and the performances. We've said it before and well, we're going to say it again. This is what all youth orientated shows should aspire to be. It has energy, creativity and commitment in spades. There are more than a few professional companies that could learn a lot from these guys. | 111 | VideoAll Play 'It's Rude To Point' | Summer is usually not a good time for dance, the theaters are all closed and most of the good companies are on holiday or filling out 400 pages of funding applications. However, it's also the time for the new companies to come to the fore and show what they're made of. The summer months are the time for the new to push the old out of the way and say 'look at me'! One such company is All Play, a dance theatre outfit that has put together an ultra portable piece of dance comprising movement, theatre and a touch of comedy. The ultra portable side stems from the fact that "It's Rude To Point" can be performed anywhere with little or no technical backup, lights, or even an indoor venue. This obviously keeps the cost down but the quality of the work is sky high. Think New Art Club but with comedy that's actually funny! The company speaks of their work thus; "An exploration of the function and dysfunction of friendship, personal space and communication, the performers tumble, wrestle, fly and laugh through the 20 minutes that is the current performance piece, otherwise known as ‘It’s Rude to Point’. Capable of anticipating each other’s responses, the performers test each other’s limits, appealing to the audience as a mediator for their game-play. As confidences are broken the relationship starts to fragment. Physical and verbal banter become simultaneously ridiculous, entertaining and uncomfortably compromising." "It's Rude To Point" is performed and created by Vanessa Cook and Nikki O'Hara and the work will be touring to almost anywhere you can think of in the Autumn. If you want some more info about the company check out their website for more video and imagery. | 112 | VideoBare Bones Dance Company 'Magnification' | The title of the show isn't all that but Bare Bones are back for version 6 of their campaign to keep dancing as square as possible, meaning the shape of the performance space! Things are a little bit different this time because we have one more dancer than usual (six instead of five) and the show is not quite finished at the moment. At the time of writing two of the works are finished or almost finished. One of which we feature here. 'Maginification', choreographed by the AD of Australian Dance Theatre Garry Stewart is a bit of a weird one because it explores, in some detail, the in and outs of the way the human body moves and the noises it makes when it does so. Intrigued dear reader? Then read on! "In this innovative new work from Australian choreographer Garry Stewart, the inner workings of the body are put under the magnifying glass. Minute bodily functions such as the growth of cells, the cracking of bones and the stretching of muscles are amplified and explored through inventive choreography and an evocative sound score using Foley sound effects. Beginning with small detailed movements, the work evolves into acts of highly charged physicality as the dancers discover the unlimited functional capabilities of the human body." The soundtrack, by Luke Smiles, can be a little bit unsettling at times, especially when you here it live in the theatre, but it fits the work perfectly and you can't help but admire the innovation. Touring for 'In Action' will not begin until next year so you have plenty of time to organise a viewing of this particular show when a third piece will be added, alongside this one and 'Container' by Rui Horta. 'Magnification' is performed by Celine Alwyn, Robert Bell and Robert Clark with audio by Luke Smiles and Choregraphy by Garry Stewart. More info on The Bones (as we call them) website. | 113 | VideoACE Dance and Music 'Letlalo' | Our second feature from The Big Mission festival, more to follow next week, shows ACE Dance and Music in full flight performing one their works from the 'Skin' tour. 'Letlalo', choreographed by Vincent Mantsoe, features about 5 minutes of gentle adage work and 30 minutes of hard core dancing performed at full speed by the cast of six dancers. Work for the faint of heart this is not! The promotional speak says; "The second piece is Letlalo by Vincent Mantsoe. The word Letlalo is Mantsoe’s native mother tongue for Skin. With its roots firmly planted in African culture and spirituality, Letlalo takes you on a journey through time, reflecting on the natural patterns of people, exploring energy and change. As with Blind Trip, Letlalo explores what lies beneath the skin, the spirit of unity and those things that we all share. Letlalo is about human power and spirit. One of post-Apartheid South Africa’s leading choreographers, Vincent descends from a long line of Sangomas (his mother, aunts and grandmother are healers/diviners) and draws his inspiration from ancestral worship as well as contemporary world cultures." The tour of this particular show has just ended but it will be back in the Autumn and the company are also plotting new works for next year. Keep an eye on their website for more details. 'Latlalo' is performed by; Marcia Edwards, Keisha Grant, Gywneth Noot-Griffiths, Thoko Seganye, Luyande Sidiya and Elena Zaino. | 15 5 08 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoPair Dance 'Silent Steps' | The recent Big Mission Festival that took place in Swindon last week is living proof that the festival circuit is the best place to look for new hidden gems from dance makers. Harriet Macauley's Pair Dance brought 'Silent Steps' to the table and provided the morning audience (the festival started in the morning and kept going until nightfall) with a wake up call. Created for Resolution in 2007, the assured dance making and precision performances by the three dancers proved to be one of the top three shows in the whole festival. Not much is written about the work itself, a wise choice if you ask us, less writing more dancing we say, but what is written is as follows; "The work is highly physical as dancers trace steps, tumbling and falling with laughter and giggles. Silent Steps delves into thoughts, memories and the internal dialogue between our inner and outer self The spiral serves as a light house or guide which leads the way..." The "spiral" referred to is the hanging sculpture you can see at the back of the stage. Pair Dance are most definitely a company to keep your eyes on and if ACE ever manage to implement a funding system that actually works then this company needs to be on the list. 'Silent Steps' is performed by Harriet Macauley, Brenda Nassali, Charlotte Price and Grace Hann (there are only three dancers on stage we'll clarify which ones) with music and sound by Richard Leonard. The company's next show is part of the First international Competition in Denmark this coming June. You can check out their website for further details. | 13 5 08 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoHofesh Shechter 'Uprising' | There is very little in the way of press information for 'Uprising' and after you watch the show you realise there doesn't really need to be any. If you enjoy your dance work with detailed choreography, excellent dancers and percussive music then this is the work for you. Hofesh Shechter is being commisioned to make work for companies all over the country and it's not hard to see why. Adding excellent lighting to the mix and a spectacular venue (The Liverpool Empire) and you have the perfect recipe for one of the strongest pieces of work currently out there. Hofesh has recently completed a commission for Scottish Dance Theatre and with two more commissions on their way for the International Dance Festival in Birmingham and CandoCo. Dance Company you can expect to see a lot more work with this type of attention to choreographic detail in the near future. The press info does tell us the following; "Seven men emerge from the shadows to bombard the stage with their edgy energy, bonding and sparring, making up and falling out. A highly charged short work with a propulsive, percussive score, Uprising leaves audiences buzzing." Dancers: Bruno Karim Guillore, Christopher Evans, Leon Baugh, Gavin Coward, Elias Lazaridis, Young Jin Kim, Hofesh Shechter. With choreography and music by Hofesh Shechter. | 118 | VideoJonathon Lunn Dance Company 'Self Assembly' | 'Self Assembly' is the beginnings of a much larger piece and if this small segment is anything to go by then were in for a treat when the thing finally gets finished. Featuring the dulcet tones of Anthony Minghella, director of the English Patient among others, on the soundtrack Mr Lunn constructs a sublime duet which appears to be exploring the nature of human relationships, we could be wrong about that though. The full length work, called 'Reading-Room', will be along later in the year in the interim the company has this to say about itself; "Jonathan Lunn is a choreographer working in dance, opera, theatre and film. He spent ten years with London Contemporary Dance Theatre as dancer, choreographer and Associate Director. Jonathan has collaborated with writer and director Anthony Minghella to create a fifteen minute duet with a layered sound score narrated by Anthony Minghella. Self Assembly is the preliminary part of a full length, non-narrative based work, Reading-Room, that will fuse music and the spoken word with that unspoken language , creating a multi layered experience. The full length piece will be touring in the interim." The piece is performed by Carly Best and Christopher Evans with music by Kate Weiland. The company does not yet have a website but they will be touring later in the year, more details to follow. | 6 2 08 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoShobana Jeyasingh Dance Company 'Faultline' | Following our interview with Shobana Jeyasingh a happy coincidence means we can now bring you a video feature on one of the company's current touring productions 'Faultline'. In the Interview Ms Jeyasingh said of the work; "There was a summer when suddenly people thought someone was going to blow up planes by smuggling liquids in bottles [onboard], there was increased security and there were raids on houses in the East End [of London]. Generally, I felt very disturbed by the problematic nature of being Asian and young and male or actually Asian and male or even female. Some of my dancers, who look particularly Asian, young and male or dark skinned, I know there were random checks on them [by the Police], they were stopped in underground stations. I think we all felt very disturbed and there was a lot of tension and anxiety around that issue so 'Faultline' really came from trying to grapple with the sense of anxiety." These scenarios are played out with superb dance making and some live opera singing. The company's ensemble of eight dancers providing the perfect compliment to the movement. Dancers: Avatara Ayuso, Jose Agudo, Rashpal Singh Bansai, Kamala Devam, Yamuna Devi, Mandeep Raikhy, Deveraj Thimmaiah, Jay Patel. Soprano: Patricia Rozario. Music by Scanner and Errollyn Warren. 'Faultline' along with "City:Zen' can be seen next at the Contact Theatre in Manchester on February 27th. Full details on the company's website. | 6 2 08 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoScottish Dance Theatre 'Tenderhook' | Scottish Dance Theatre's second appearance on Article19 follows a very different path from the last work that appeared on this site. 'Sorry for the Missiles' by Vanessa Haska and 'Tenderhook' by Liv Lorent are not examples of flashy choreography, rather, both works are more thoughtful studies of complex issues. This is dance making for the thinker. Both works are just two out of SDT's current touring repertoire which also includes 'In The Middle Of The Moment' by Uri Ivgi and Johan Grebe and 'Second Storm' by Michal Zahora. With their current crop of creations the company are building quite a formidable arsenal of work under the directorship of Janet Smith. Where you see the company perform determines which two pieces of dance you will see. 'Sorry for the Missiles', according to the program notes, is; "Set to a lively mix of Eastern European folk music, Sorry for the Missiles! is an emotionally charged work that looks at the impact of conflict on communities and individuals." In particular the work draws from the dance maker's own personal experiences of the invasion and subsequent division of Cyprus in 1974. 'Tenderhook' created by Liv Lorent, from Ballet Lorent, follows a slightly more traditional narrative; "When I begin a piece I like to authenticate something from a biographical place, some feeling that I am living with, then making the connection that it's not special or pertinent to just me, [and] explore just how personal that emotion is. I'm interested in an emotional commonplace." Both works are performed by: James MacGillvray, Toby Fitzgibbons, Ruth Janssen, Steven Martin, Naomi Murray, Victoria Roberts, Raquel Gualtero Soriano, Rocco Vermijs, Solene Weinachter, Phillipa White, and Michael Zahora. Music for 'sorry for the Missiles' is by Banta de Zegata and The In Laws. Music for 'Tenderhook' is by Ezio Bosso. Update 7th February 2008: This feature was re-shot at the British Dance Edition in Liverpool. 'Sorry for the Missiles' is no longer featured. | 21 10 07 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoJasmin Vardimon Company 'Justitia' | Jasmin Vardimon Company are back on the road after a long break with their brand new work 'Justitia' which brings court room drama to the stage along with some acting and a lot of high quality dance. Following a murder the audience are taken through the lives of the various protagonists through flashbacks and vignettes as the lawyer for the defense, played by Victoria Fox, narrates the proceedings until we arrive at the shocking conclusion. OK, it's not that shocking but 'Justitia' does a fine job of transfering the 'court room drama' into a dance work. The company continues to innovate by incorporating a giant revolving stage into the mix which the dancers have to physically push round, no fancy motor powered stuff here. The company says of this piece; "JUSTITIA invites the audience on an investigative journey as it unravels the multiple truths concealed behind a gripping crime story. Presented on a revolving stage, the audience will witness the action from different perspectives - at the crime scene, in the court house, inside an intimate group therapy room - revealing new realities as a series of secrets unfold. Punctuated with provocative and insightful humour, JUSTITIA treats us to Vardimon's unique brand of highly acute physical theatre. Fiercely athletic, and beautifully detailed, this new production re-unites the creative team behind PARK, delivering a generous mix of energetic dance, a sharp script and exhilarating music. " As ever, the company demonstrate some of the finest dance making you will see anywhere in the world with a good mix of styles and techniques and stand out performances from every member of the cast. 'Justitia' is performed by Paul Blackman, Luke Burrough, Tim Casson, Victoria Fox, Christine Gouzelis, Athanasia Kanellopoulou and YungKrung Song with choreography by Jasmin Vardimon and sound design by Ohad Fishof. The company will be touring until the end of May with more touring to follow. You can keep up to date with performances on the special 'Justitia' website and through the main company website. | 1 5 07 | Free | View In iTunes
