high pressure days - april 10 | Here’s a hour of indie-funk and nu disco for butt-wigglin’ through the Easter break. Dont’ be put off if you were hoping for some house tunes.... you’ll love this :-) It’s one of two sessions I’ve had on the backburner for a while, hence the tunes being cherry-picked from the past year or so. This mix is quite upbeat, there’s another to come that’s deeper and more spaced out. We start with Beth Ditto’s reflective vocal on Cruel Intentions, cut up here by The Edit Master himself, Greg Wilson. LCD Soundsystem take us into orbit with Padded Cell’s funk-chugging take on 45:33. Other highlights include a spacey disco groove by Curses!, a Crazy P track dropped by Unabombers at Big Chill 09, electronic disco from Lifelike, Chris Menace and even the Pet Shop Boys beefed up by Trentemøller. And of course, two iPod favourites of last month: the best track from New Young Pony Club’s slightly disappointing second album, and the Talking-Heads-on-M-Kat ripper, High Pressure Days by The Units, a top track I discovered on a Mixmag covermount CD mixed by Mylo. blisstech glisten vol 2 | Something I prepared earlier... A little treat for Kat on her birthday. She texted me one evening just before Christmas saying she was listening to Blisstech Glisten and it was pushing her buttons, so I pulled together a playlist of similar vibes in her honour. We start blissfully Bent, slide through some familiar Soulsearcher vocals before being impaled on a glitchy Hobo track with its twisted Jabba The Hut bassline. Sebastien Leger turns a corner and turns up the sparkle as we float through a new take on an Orbital classic and on to the triumphant, hands-in-the-air piano finale by Tony Lionni. Enjoy! It’s one that’s been sitting ready to be laid to tape for a good few weeks now, sorry for the delay. Giom kicks off the session with a slice of his usual funky French bump stuff. Fake Blood’s Fix Your Accent serves up a wacky brew Mad Hatter-style. Crazy P’s Stop Space Return is a favourite from the summer, with Unabombers tweaking their 303 on the mix. Other highlights include the nu disco/retro house stomper from The Juan Maclean, and Dennis Ferrer’s massive Hey Hey. perfect motion: roach motel and fire island | I had a week off recently and whilst digging around for tunes online I rediscovered a chunk of early remixes by Terry Farley and Pete Heller of Junior Boys Own fame. In the early 90s I was a big fan of their work under the Fire Island and Roach Motel monicas. This session pulls together some of my favourite FI/RM looped bassline grooves and brass stabs. We open in 1992 with Sunsreem’s classic Perfect Motion, slide through dubs of Juliet Roberts and Monie Love (two records I foggily recall mixing back-to-back continuously one morning after Flesh at the Hacienda), In Your Bones reminds me of dancing downstairs at Paradise Factory with Selina, and as one of the finest house tunes ever produced, Movin’ On has to be one of my Desert Island Discs. Transatlantic was a tune Ted used to play at post-Strangeways chill outs, and we close with a blissful Balearic take on New Order’s Regret - not a great dance floor moment, but a regular on the car stereo driving to work in my Key103 days. All this seems pretty fitting as Junior Boys Own hosted their own event in London last night (according to the Guardian Guide, their first in 16 years) and much of the catalogue is now reissued through Defected, although I’ve tried to steer around some of those more obvious classics. Most of the tunes are from ’92 - ’95 so I’ll also upload this to the Classic Archive podcast. Apologies if you get duplicates. Enjoy! update - july 09 | Here’s the latest ‘update’ instalment. The tunes are mainly from July with a couple of stragglers from May/June, plus the usual rediscoveries thrown in for good measure. Giom’s mix of As Darkness Falls has been in the box a lot this summer. It was on a CD I bought whilst shooting in LA in January but only found a few weeks back, hence it’s cropping up on a few Noël mixes. The Wawa track is an old favourite that’s resurfaced since Defected reissued the Fluential catalogue earlier this year. KneeDeep’s All Night doesn’t disappoint, but it’s trumped by Tony Lionni’s Found A Place - my current top tune, which leads us into the heart of the mix’s commercial dancefloor stompers. A few slices of electro towards the end including a different mix of La Roux’s breakthrough single and the theme from the Orange RockCorps tv ad. beach beats - june 09 | Here’s a sunshine session I mixed a few weeks ago but needed to get through The Big G before I found time to chapter the tracks and upload it for you. The attached file is 75 minutes of deep and classic house for poolside toe-tapping, helping to make those sunbathing hours slip by a little faster. codeine coma kick back | I had my lower wisdom teeth removed on Monday. I had my upper ones out a few years ago and thought this would be a similar experience: bit of discomfort and back to work in a couple of days. I didn’t believe the dentist when he said it would take me over a week to recover. It’s now Saturday and I still have a numb jaw. Why am I telling you all of this? Well the dihydrocodeine pain killers I’ve been prescribed have kept me floating through the week and they have inspired the title of this latest sleepy deep house session. The attached file compiles an hour of vocal and tech grooves, perfect for drifting off in the sunshine. tedalicious techno trip | It’s been years since I laid down a mix especially for Ted, and he deserves much more appreciation! In fact I mat be correct in saying that I’ve not done a totally 100% Ted-dedicated mix since I first met him 14 years ago. I had hoped to get this together in time for his recent birthday but was too crap. Better late than never, here’s a selection of glitchy minimal cuts and hypnotic techno grooves, blended with Tedford in mind. update summer 08 | Here I am posting a summer mix in October - *blush*. Hopefully it’s worth the wait, and at just over two hours long, I’m trying my best to make up for it. The usual Update formula is followed here. We start with some deeper vocal cuts, move though some bump and jack Chicago-style grooves and then hit the main room for big electro and tech anthems. And it’s all pretty commercial too - lots of remixes, rerubs and bootlegs. Highlights for me include Matt Shrewd’s Grime Time, which first caught my ear on Unknown FM. Inland Knights make light work of Eric B’s classic rap in Where Ya At, and check out the re-workings of classics like Man With The Red face, Rich In Paradise and Born Slippy. This session also features one of my own edits of Jovonn’s mix of Mary J’s Just Fine, and we wind up with a recently rediscovered Guilty Pleasure: the euphoric 80s sequenced sythns in TFF’s Change remix. sunlounger deep soulful | With the release of Defected’s recent Charles Webster compilation I’ve been delving into his back catalogue and discovering lots of lovely deep gems, which in turn have inspired a couple of new noël sessions. One of warm moody grooves (to follow) and this one of soulful vocal tracks from the likes of Dennis Ferrer, Quentin Harris and Kings Of Tomorrow. Perfect vibes for lounging about in the sun (if we see it this summer) so load this onto your iPod if you’re off on holiday. blisstech glisten | I’m a big fan of the blissed-out minimal trance* tech sound from the likes of Deadmau5 and Glenn Morrison, whose tunes have been appearing on this podcast for the past couple of years. Admittedly, it feels like these producers are something of one-trick ponies, but I’m loving it and thought I’d bang ‘em together on one mix before the sound gets too old and over-played. *When I say ‘trance’, I don’t mean the Ferry Corsten / Paul Van Dyke / Mitsubishi-chomping / Gatecrasher ‘99 anthems... Although painted from the same palette, the tracks in this session are stripped down and laid back. More reminiscent of early ‘90s trance, think along the lines of Age Of Love, System 7, Uncle Bob et al. Besides, the mix opens on more of a chill-tech tip before really beginning to sparkle in the second half. This session is not all about spanking new tunes as I’ve pulled faves from the last two years. saturday night special no 35 | Matt made his DJ debut at Driver Bar warming up the crowd with a special two hour playlist of soul, funk, broken beats, deep house, and general groove-bound chunky stuff. Occasionally Matt challenges me to mix some of his tunes, which is never easy given the mix of genres and varying range of BPMs. My Bank Holiday mission lay in blending his playlist from 19 April, and I’m pleased to say that it’s turned out pretty well. Great summer iPod food! Even though it made things more difficult, I stayed pretty true to M’s original running order. I cheated in a couple of places with cuts and simpler segues - BPM geeks won’t blame me given that things vary between 92 and 133. Whatever, there are some great tracks on here and no doubt I’ll be playing some of these smoother tunes as part of my Glasto sets next month. Jon Cutler’s Groove Me and MJ Cole’s remix of Jill Scott are long-term favourites of ours, but I also like some of Matt’s phatter futureboogie-style selects: Fat John, Rhianna, Sia, Detroit Experiment all deserve a little extra volume. Even Osunlade’s Phil Collins re-rub works. I’m not sure about the Vivian Green / Alix Alarvez section. In fact I admit to cutting the Alvarez track to a single verse and chorus because I find it far too bland. It appears I just have no soul. :-) Something different for the podcast. update march 08 - Driver Bar warm up | I’m getting very excited about mine and Chris Healy’s joint bday bash at Driver Bar in April. I’ve been glued to the web over the last week buying and learning about new lighting gadgets. The plan is to turn the bar into a club. We open with a Rhianna track that Selina mentioned was a current favourite after she found it in another one of my mixes. It’s not the Rhianna of ‘Umbrella-ella-ella’ fame. best of 07 - deep | As ever, it’s been difficult to find the time to lay down some tunes - the last mixes I did were in April ;-/ So, time to reflect on what’s been missed. I’m putting together some ‘best of 07’ mixes, each covering a few genres of house music. First up, part 1 is a selection of laid-back sexy lounging beats. The mix opens with a cover of a Tears For Fears classic, which was actually released early 2006 but it came to my attention in April 07 at a party after a TV shoot in Cape Town. I love this version, but fear it’s just slightly on the wrong side of the cheese knife... Other highlights for me are Miguel Migs’ Mesmerized and the tracks by M-SWIFT and Kerri Chandler. chloe sun sea sex fashion party | Yes, those lovely people at Chloé invited me back as DJ and music consultant for their Spring 2008 show and party in London. The event took place on the top floor of Shoreditch House. The production team covered and heated the roof-top pool area and built catwalks across the water for the show. Guests were then invited to sit down for dinner. I played through welcoming cocktails and also sequenced the music for the catwalk. Preparing for the show was more difficult than last year as I was in LA shooting some cinema commercials. To get things approved by Chloé I posted tracks online from my hotel room and sequenced the music on the Mac during the flight back to London. The night was a fantastic success. chloe fashion show 06 | Here’s a departure from the usual house sessions. I played a gig for French fashions house, Chloé, at Home House in London. Chloé employed me as dj and music consultant for the evening, following distinct briefs for three parts of the night: before the show, the show itself, and the after party. The attached audio is a short 20 minute mix from the fashion show. I recorded this the day after the party. I mixed it live on the night but a few of Chloé’s clients asked for a copy. Gritty contemporary rock cut with hip hop beats and a couple of party faves.
