Podcast Description
An exhibition of experimental 3d digital art with each piece delivered as a podcast episode all work here produced by BA Digital Arts students at Kingston College. These animations were designed with the iPod Touch/iPhone in mind and benefit from the small but hi res screen however they also play equally well directly within iTunes. Given an open brief to create a digital animated artwork using 3d software the work here is the result of 4 weeks conceptual, technical and visual experimentation and development. Software used is Maxon's Cinema 4D R11 Studio Bundle, final editing used Final Cut Express and After Effects. | 2 | VideoryanTyler > changes over time | This piece of experimental 3d work called Changes over time was created by using C4D (Cinema 4D) but using a different side of 3d that a lot of people underestimate . My whole idea was to create something that represents change or changes overtime. This is because over the past 4 years I myself have changed and have a better lifestyle then before with more confidence, abilities and friends. Becoming older you are able to explore more of the world and all its different experiences and this piece of work hopefully shows change. To show change in a experimental way I went with focusing on the shadows of objects rather than the objects them self, this is because it gives a different look that not a lot of 3d movies or short animations show off but in the same way is every important to 3d in creating realism. Also shadows move and change in different ways to what any object can and it gives the user a whole new dimension to 3d that most people wouldn’t even think about using. | 15 4 10 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 3 | VideojamieTyler > of black and white and organic | Of Black, White and Organic This piece was made using C4D, Realflow and Adobe after effects most of my projects were rendered out in slow motion, with this I wanted to create something so simple but yet looks effective and this is how I came up with the idea of organic movement so everything flows, this piece is a few different animations of simple objects moving in a simplistic style so for instance I would of used a default object in different kinds of animation styles, also the colours of the piece is all black and white as this also gives the illusion on 2d look in some cases but also is so simple as well, I used the cel render option in all my renders for the white background and black objects. I did it like this way because I have always liked the styles of art which are so simple and slow they stand out to me from the rest im not sure why this is maybe it is just different from regular animations, the black n white colours always go well together I felt that I didn't want to get all complicated and confused with colours so I completely removed them. it's a slow calm pieces which is reflected within the music choice I made which I feel is a great piece of music and it fits into my piece really well, this pieces represents me a lot I feel in that it's just going with the flow. I hope this pieces shows that animation doesn't need to be complicated at all to get good results. I do feel that the appearance of this pieces will stand out as there are not many animations that are like this form removing all colour and flowing animation. The type of animations that I used are a range from realflow which is dynamics to manual key framing and particles, I did do quite a few test renders to try and get the frame rate right for the slow motion effects on some of the clips. | 15 4 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

| 5 | VideonickMartin > reach For The Stars | There is nothing more romantic then being alone with someone you love and getting lost in the vastness of the universe. The idea was to capture this moment and slow it down. I’ve played around with lights and emitters for so long now, I’ve never really mixed them together, and this is the result. I particularly chose to do this piece, as I wanted to focus on the simplicity of it, which in particular has a major effect on the rendering time, which has proved to be a problem for other students. Although as I have seen before, simple things can look stunning if done correctly, and I feel this is one of those pieces. It is aesthetically pleasing and actually has a story behind it. It makes the experimentation more interesting when there’s a story behind it, because it makes the viewer think more as opposed to simply watching it and going “yeah, it looks good” and then forget about it. It should be something that sticks in your mind for a while. You could argue that it doesn’t quite fit into the “experimental 3d” category as they’re stars, but they’re really just lights. As I said before, the idea only really came about from doing a simple experimentation with putting lights in an emitter, and this was the result. It wasn’t until this point did I put a storyline to it. | 15 4 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

| 7 | VideojacquesCorbyTeuch > friends Of Father | My experimental 3D piece was really an exploration in the feelings of the song I’ve picked, Friends of Father, by Ad-ver-sary. To me, the song is about organised chaos, things start out gently, slowly, and then. Everything breaks out, the song gets heavier until it reaches a crescendo, but even then, it’s restrained, tame, and minimalistic to a degree. So with that in mind, I set about trying to create a visual representation of that core concept. The song starts out slowly so I had to start the same way, things then start to build up, get busier, while still staying constrained by the music. The beats kick in and things start to happen, the music starts to alter the shape of the objects, makes them react, interact. The tempo’s starting to get a little faster, but everything is still staying restrained, I didn’t want hugely fancy effects getting in the way of the song, which is the driving force of the video. I chose to keep a simple blue, white, orange colour scheme because I didn’t want to distract from the minimalist theme in the song or video. I didn’t want any big fancy effects, unnecessary reflective or transparent materials, etc. The video was made primarily by using sound effectors in conjunction with thinking particles in C4D, with XPresso providing the backbone of the random animation. | 28 3 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

| 9 | VideojamieCreamer > loops 5 and 7 | Straight edges, squares and geometric shapes. This is what I like. They form the ideas behind my work. I created this piece after looking at the Rule of Golden thirds and the relationship between the number and the images that you can form with them. I feel that the piece represents my love of all things square, the decided upon a pale, pastel palette of colours as I feel that this mixes well with the sharp , hard edges of the shapes in the video. The video does include a more spherical shape but the shape was actually created with cubes, almost a form of disguise for the squares. The piece was created using C4D, PHOTOSHOP, FINAL CUT PRO & AFTEREFFECTS. The final piece is constructed from 5 separate each created using a separate method but all with a common sound track. So although the final outcomes all differ they are all connected by the idea of the structure and form of a square.cube and the sound track. I think that the parts of the piece seem almost mechanical and feel very industrial. This mixed with the pastel soft colours creates a interested contrast. I choose the colour scheme for this very reason, rather then go for a similarly strong, bold colours to match the strong edges of the shapes the soft pastel colours also add an almost feminine quality to the male shapes. hope you enjoy it. | 28 3 10 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 10 | VideojoshMinhBui > Perfect Day | I tend to look at the bright things in life; weather, landscape and the smell and colours of flowers. As some of the key things that I come across in a daily basis it made sene to try to represent these ideas and feelings in a 3D virtual object. I am interested in the language and the meaning of different types of flowers. The form is designed to look like a flower, starting from a very simple line or two, its twist, and turns into something glorious. The rounded and the semi transparent shapes representing each and every petals, and to help the viewers resolve the state I am trying to recreate. The speed of the animation is crucial; I want the viewers to be engage in the simple purposely slow animation and resolve the rich detail of the piece. | 28 3 10 | Free | View In iTunes |
