Le Jongleur De Notre Dame Preview | Hebrides Ensemble, Scotland’s foremost contemporary music group, makes its debut at Opera North at 7.30pm on Friday 21 May in the Howard Assembly Room, in a programme of works by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. The Ensemble will give the Opera North premier of Maxwell Davies’ remarkable music-theatre work, Le Jongleur de Nortre Dame, directed by Joshua Armstrong. The concert is part of Opera North’s first full season at their new arts hub, the Howard Assembly Room situated within the beautifully restored Leeds Grand Theatre in the centre of Leeds. Le Jongleur is based on an ancient French legend and tells the tale in music of a juggler who enters an abbey and the exploits that ensue. Maxwell Davies’ work is a ‘sacred comedy’ written for instrumentalists, a singer, a juggler and a children‘s band. The role of the abbot is sung by baritone Håkan Vramsmo, and the juggler is played by the acclaimed acrobat, Chris Patfield. The work is extraordinary in that the other parts are written for the musicians and the flautist, clarinettist, percussionist and violinist all perform the roles of the monks and the Virgin Mary.
