CleanHomegrown Programme 69 | This programme is a compilation of my audio blogs from 24th Feb till 5th March 2007 while I have been participating in the Slam Idol Open Writing Challenge. The premise of the competition is to get 6 poets to create an original poem over 10 days, while audio blogging their creative process and progress. You can find out more about the competition by following the link below to the Slam Idol website and listening to the other competitors. I had a great deal of fun and a little frustration in creating my poem, which took up quite a bit of time. Hence no typical Homegrown this week. But I hope you enjoy this all poetry programme and insight into my own creative process. There will soon be a voting process on Slam Idol to find listeners favourite poem. ExplicitHomegrown Programme 62 | Special studio guest Giovanni Esposito aka Spoz the 11th Birmingham Poet Laureate ‘Spoz' being the bit between the ‘E' and the ‘ito' (kind of). Spoz describes himself as a sort of poet. The sort, in fact, that has been published, recorded, been on the radio, won awards, is a member of the renowned ‘New October Poets', taken part in so many festivals, he's lost count and even had a commission from the BBC. The sort of poet that isn't quite everybody's cup of tea, though, could be yours. He's a singer, songwriter, playwright and musical writer. He has produced and directed self penned musicals in Birmingham and Edinburgh. He's written and recorded albums with several bands as well as a solo artiste and appeared before the Queen mum (RIP). In this interview I talk to Spoz about his many achievements including the Birmingham Poet Laureateship, his work with bringing poetry to children, and his self written "karaoke" musicals. Spoz also performs the poems : Vodka Catalyst, Identity Poem, Dying For A Dump In The Car On The Way Back From Cheltenham, Disco Dad and I Met Jesus At St Andrews Football Stadium You can aslo check out Spoz's Myspace site which has examples of his work. The process is a rewarding experience for the listener as you come away with a feeling of kinship, that here is someone here who can put into words what you are feeling, who can express a certain moment in your life through his music. CleanHomegrown Programme 53 | Special Studio Guest Paul Murpy This weeks podcast is given over entirely to my special guest Paul Murphy, a singer and songwriter who has been writing and performing over the past four decades. He was born in Belfast and came to England in 1966 as a 16 year-old-with just a guitar and a handful of songs. From the beginning he was determined to write songs that had integrity and drew on real experience. During those formative early years on the road he hung out with the likes of Lemmy from Motorhead and Van Morrison. Paul has called Birmingham home for over 30 years and has been a vocal supporter of songwriting and live music in his adopted city. In 1996 he established SongwritersCafe, which for several years provided a valuable showcase for up and coming artists as well as featuring turns from more established acts such as Ocean Colour Scene who invited Paul to support them on an Irish tour. Until recently Paul has focused almost exclusively on live, intimate performances that allow for his huge capacity for spontaneity. 'On the spot' songs have long been a hallmark of his gigs. So also is spoken word, poetry or talking blues. He says: "The thing with live performance is that like theatre it's in the moment, unique, unchangeable and for a procrastinator like me that is huge liberation." In this interview Paul talks about his full and varied career in music, from his beginnings in Ireland, coming to England in 66, performing at the Marquee Club, developing his songwriting / poetry skills, setting up the now famous Songwriters Cafe in Birmingham to his present live work, including raucous guest slots with gypsy and klezmer influenced 14 piece band The Destroyers. Paul has recently been working on recording four decades worth of original songs. Here he performs new songs College Square & Hometown, as well as spoken pieces Shoplifters Talking Blues & Dark Road. You can find more information about Paul at http://www.myspace.com/paulmurphysings & at C21Vox You can also view a video of Paul performing with the Destroyers on Halloween at Google Video | 13 11 06 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitHomegrown Programme 30 - Special "Bedroom Works" | Music & Poetry from Nic Treadwell For this edition of Homegrown I have decided to dust off a few of my more mature songs and poems, which have not seen the light of day for some time. All these performances were recorded at Home, and in some cases took more than one take to get down. I think these works serve as a good introduction to my writing and my character. I had a lot of fun recording them and I hope they inspire some kind of reaction now that they are out in the electronic wires. The links below will take you to the song lyrics and poems at my own site. Next week we will be back to our regular eclectic mix of independent music and poetry from around the web. Music Tripping Indian Portrait Dear Time Can Really Screw You Up Sine Storyville Poetry Atmospheres New Jesus Time Silences Mention in the programme - Slam Idol Podcast (Please vote for all the poems in the latest competition including me) Want to contribute to the programme? I'm looking at maybe producing an occasional special Homegrown Song Circle whereby we focus on 2 or three artists performing a couple of stripped down versions of songs. The other idea is for a small weekly spotlight on songwriting/music creation with an artist explaining a little about how a piece came to be. Both of these ideas need your contributions to work. If you an artist who has sent stuff into me or planning to send stuff and you have the ability to either record a short audio file about the writing process or drop down an explination in an e-mail then please do. Equally if you have acoustic versions of songs please send those. I will see what the response it like and keep you posted. | 26 5 06 | Free | View In iTunes |

What do you think of a monthly songwriting challenge, whereby a theme is set and artists try to write songs specifically around that subject and submit the results to me for inclusion in the programme? Do you know a poet? If so get them to contact me with material for immediate inclusion. E-mail me with your thoughts or post messages on the In Roads forum. HomeGrown : A music podcast worth a listen
This podcast is one of my favourites. Nic guides the listener through a varied mix of musical offerings in a very proffessional and entertaining way. The choice of music ranging from rootsy rock and pop to accoustic folk and dancey electronic mixed with poetry really does create a unqiue atmosphere to every programme. I would recomment this podcast to anyone who has an ecclectic taste in music and enjoys listening to new music. This is what podcasting was invented for!
