This week starts our look at the fourth ever story of Doctor Who – Marco Polo. Bit of a tricky one this one. A bit of a first for MMM – this is the first time ever we have done a commentary for a story that has never had an official release, anywhere. It’s a missing story you see, the BBC decided in their wisdom to get rid of it. But luckily some enterprising chaps took many photos of the actual video when it existed, and a lot of other enterprising chaps made audio recordings of the episodes. Put them together and you have a missing episode reconstruction, which you can quite easily get hold of if you are handy with a particular type of search engine and know how to type in the words Marco Polo. In the episode, alien time traveller the Doctor (Matt Smith) takes his companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and her husband Rory (Arthur Darvill) to the planet Apalapucia for a holiday, but the find that the planet is on quarantine as the two-hearted natives are susceptible to a deadly plague. Amy accidentally gets separated from the Doctor and Rory but when they try to rescue her they arrive 36 years later in her timeline. The older Amy does not trust the Doctor, who is forced to remain on the TARDIS as he also has two hearts, and will not allow the Doctor and Rory leave and rescue her at the correct point in her timeline. MMM Commentary for Breaker Morant | MMM is proud to present a commentary track for a film that not a lot of people know about, but a a film that a lot of people should. During the Boer War, three Australian lieutenants are on trial for shooting Boer prisoners. Though they acted under orders, they are being used as scapegoats by the General Staff, who hopes to distance themselves from the irregular practices of the war. The trial does not progress as smoothly as expected by the General Staff, as the defence puts up a strong fight in the courtroom. It is a truly powerful film, which not only shows the brutality of war, but the unfairness and inequity of war. So we felt it opportune to revisit the way we do things and re-evaluate what we want to do with our time in the caravan speaking into microphones. We have decided to concentrate more fully on that, our first love. Now that doesn’t mean that Fantragic is disappearing, far from it. MMM Commentary: Iron Man | When Iron Man hit the screens in 2008, he was a lesser known super hero who had not enjoyed neither a cinema career before hand nor a legendary origin talent nor been upstaged by an adversary played by Jack Nicholson ( “I told you…thirty million PLUS the toy concession or I don’t come Monday!”). In short, as far as cinema heroes, Mr Man was a bit of a cleanskin (no pun) In the opinion of MMM, that was a distinct advantage. The full MMM panel covers this bed wettingly popular film that impressed the hell out of millions who had never heard the ‘pepper”potts joke before. Robert Downey Jr is on fire, pretty hard with all that scotch in you, and Messrs Favreau, Bridges and Mrs Martin are also doing a great job in this very fresh take on the man who becomes a marauding machine. Learn about Iron’s comic book origins, spot the three forgettable uses of the old TV theme tune and see if you agree that the Stan Lee cameos are reaching thier use by date. MMM Commentary: Blake’s 7 – Terminal | Trev’s greatest hour, or one of them came with this sensational climax to the third season of Blake’s Seven. End of season cliffhangers had become part and parcel of the show but this is the story that really shook the fans up. Trev was one of those fans and he still shakes today (but that may be the vertical hold). When Avon takes the Liberator to a secret the location the rest of the crew are puzzled and suspicious. But his final goal shocked everyone. Meanwhile an apparently innocuous space cloud brings a threat that takes the greatest casualty so far. And what has it all to do with Servelan? Podcast #66: Water | Things get slightly damp in the Fantragic caravan this episode as Tony takes over and organises the programming duties and guides our podcast through its paces. Erudite, Intelligent, Funny and Good-Natured
I actually just created an iTunes account solely to write this review, because it's a crime they haven't had one before. Consider that a recommendation in itself For their field - alternative DVD commentaries and discussion of Genre TV and Film - MMM are the very, very best. Sure, there might be a better podcast of this kind out there, but I haven't found it yet. The MMM team bring laconic humour, erudition, and intelligence to a variety of genre subjects, producing some of the best DVD commentaries available, and a fortnightly podcast that is like a pop culture lecture in a good friend's living room - in the best possible way. The occasional sound of the Australasian birdlife squawking enthusiastically outside deserves a special mention - I hope they never decide to filter it out! Frankly, if this podcast wasn't free I'd gladly pay to subscribe to it. But it IS free, so I figure I owe them this review instead.
