VideoAn overview of BlueVia in Spanish by Jose Valles | Right then time for Jose Valles, top man at BlueVia, to feature again. This time there's a bit of a change to the normal interview style though. I just changed one tiny aspect. The language! I asked Jose if he could introduce BlueVia entirely in Spanish. My Spanish is limited to basic two and three letter words -- therefore I briefed Jose not to expect any questions whatsoever from me -- and to just give us a continual stream. Aaaaaand I think that's what he's done. I heard various key phrases in amongst the Spanish so I think it's all good. If you're a native Spanish speaker or if Spanish is one of your languages, could you let me know what you think? ;-) Thanks Jose! And for MIR's Spanish readers, here's a wee explanation courtesy of the Google Translate engine: Estoy utilizando la herramienta de Google Translate para escribir este texto. Por favor, perdona el mal español. Este video muestra a José Valles de BlueVia nos da una visión general de la empresa. | 9 | VideoJosé Valles: The background to BlueVia | It's time for the third episode of our BlueVia Introduction series (kindly supported by BlueVia). This time we hear from BlueVia's top man, José Valles. I was initially planning on doing a 5-6 minute interview with him just to make sure we had his perspective. We spoke together on camera for 20 minutes at Mobile World Congress -- and goodness me, it was fascinating. I think perhaps the most exciting element of the interview was the refreshingly direct and hugely enthusiastic manner in which José presented BlueVia. In this episode, José describes how mobile operators (including Telefonica) have a pretty poor track record when it comes to working with mobile developers. He then sets the scene for BlueVia and describes why Telefonica has introduced the programme. We'll have more from José on Monday. For more information on BlueVia, Telefonica's developer programme, please visit www.bluevia.com. | 18 3 11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoFounder of Twitea.me, Arturo Garrido, discusses BlueVia | In the first of our BlueVia Introduction series (kindly supported by BlueVia), we meet Arturo Garrido, the founder of Twitea.me -- a mobile developer who's already heavily using BlueVia, Telefonica's developer programme. Arturo's service is a Twitter-by-SMS service for Mexico where there's a high proliferation of feature phones -- but also high demand for services such as Twitter. Arturo's service enables consumers to use Twitter via SMS. All well and good. The problem for him used to be the business model. Sending and receiving SMS used to cost him a lot of money and Arturo used to have to support the service with advertising (or, in some cases, pay for it himself). That's until Telefonica's BlueVia came along and changed his world for the better. Have a watch of the video to find out more. In particular, take note of his comments around the BlueVia business model -- Arturo is now generating revenue instead of losing it! Plus he's got carrier-class reliability and the capability to launch into lots of other countries using the same BlueVia API. For more information on BlueVia, Telefonica's developer programme, please visit www.bluevia.com. | 16 3 11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoJames Parton introduces BlueVia from Telefonica | In the first of our new video series, we meet James Parton, Head of Marketing for Telefonica's developer programme, BlueVia. I asked James to introduce BlueVia to us and to highlight it's key offerings for developers. If you are working in mobile development, you should be intimately aware of what you can do with BlueVia. The team there have basically put an API in front of the Telefonica global network -- which offers some phenomenal opportunities, in terms of user experience, market access and developer revenue potential. Their services are live and usable for 80 million Telefonica subscribers right now. I will be going into a lot more detail with BlueVia, particularly on the revenue side, in the coming posts -- but in the meantime, please do get a cup of coffee and watch this introduction from James. For more information on BlueVia, Telefonica's developer programme, please visit www.bluevia.com. Everything you need to get started with BlueVia is right there on the site including all the API documentation -- however if you'd like an introduction to James and the team there, just drop me a note. | 12 | VideoEpisode 218: Nokia's Marco Argenti on the growth of Ovi | At the MEF Americas 2010 Content & Commerce event in Miami recently I sat down with Nokia's top Ovi man, Marco Argenti, to ask him about how things were going with the platform. In a measure of how quickly things are progressing, the stat he gave in this video (over 3 million downloads per day) is now out of date -- and that's in just 3 weeks! The Ovi Store is now getting in excess of 3.5 million downloads each day. | 23 12 10 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoEpisode 211: The Smartphone Obsession Part 2, Mark Freeman of Movement | Following on from the first episode of The Smartphone Obsession in Marketing Series it's time for episode two. I caught up with Mark Freeman, one of the founders of mobile agency, Movement, at the recent IAB Mobile event. Given Mark's company has been working with many of the leading lights in the mobile industry, I wanted to see what he thought about my assertion that the mobile marketing industry is far too obsessed with smartphones. I especially liked Mark's comments on brands writing for the medium of SMS. Have a watch and see what you think. | 23 7 10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 210: A look at Qualcomm's Mirasol display technology | During a walkabout of the Uplinq Soutions Showcase floor, I bumped into Cheryl Goodman, Director of Marketing for Qualcomm's Mirasol screen display technology. I asked if she'd be keen to show us a demonstration on camera and she readily agreed. The technology is phenomenal. It has super-low power requirements and looks utterly amazing. Although it's already in-market in many devices on a small scale, we should expect to see it integrated into some larger (and rather well known) consumer devices toward the end of the year. Mirasol technology is based on what's known as 'biomimicry' -- that is, it mimics features found in nature to display the colours you see. Ok, over to Cheryl for more information... | 20 7 10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 209: Future of Voicemail Series, Part 4 | I've been getting emails from people wondering when the next episode in the Future of Voicemail Series was going live. Tah dah! It's here. Episode 4 features the co-founder of HulloMail, Andy Munarriz. Andy's no stranger to Mobile Industry Review -- indeed we first interviewed him on camera about two years ago when HulloMail first launched their iPhone application and service. Having co-founded a company supplying next-generation voicemail services to consumers (and operators), you'd expect Andy to have something to say on the subject. I'm pleased to say you won't be disappointed. In today's episode you'll see Andy talk through his perspective and experience on the background, development and next generation of voicemail services. It's particularly interesting given HulloMail's history delivering voicemail services to mobile operators around the world. I should point out that it's down to Andy's generous support (and the rest of the team at HulloMail) that I've been able to produce and publish this series in the first place, as HulloMail are the series sponsor. So thank you Andy. Right then, have a watch and let me know what you think! | 19 7 10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoEpisode 207: The Smartphone Obsession Series, Part 1 | Here's Part 1 of the Smartphone Obsession Series that I'm producing thanks to the support of mobile messaging giant, OpenMarket. In this first episode, I talked with Alex Meisl, Chairman at mobile marketing specialists, Sponge Group. Alex is also joint-Chairman of the Mobile Marketing Association so I thought it would be fascinating to get his viewpoint on whether he thinks there is too much obsession with smartphones in the mobile marketing arena. | 20 | VideoEpisode 206: Future of Voicemail Series, Part 3 | I'm delighted to bring you the third part of the Future of Voicemail video series featuring Shawn Barber, Director of Product for Voice Messaging at global messaging provider, Acision. To say Shawn is 'Mr Voicemail' is to put it mildly. He lives and breathes the medium, although he was clear to point out that it's no longer referred to as simply 'voicemail' but instead, 'voice messaging'. Which is good news. Because that's where I'd like the medium to as well. I'd like us to get away from the 'mail' aspect (i.e. having to dial in to retrieve messages in sequence) and move to some kind of messaging-based facility. But what does the future look like? Well, Shawn set out some rather stimulating points in today's video -- including discussing the possibility of simply providing operators with the building blocks to create their own voice messaging systems to fit any consumer scenario. So if you want the mobile operator to recognise that you're driving and thus it should pipe the voice messages down to your car stereo, no problem. Or if you want to be called with my voice messages as a matter of priority, no problem. I'd dearly like to see mobile operators offering something like this -- something better than just the same-old-thing. Shawn did a super job of answering my questions and I'm sure you'll enjoy his perspective on the future. Thank you very much for taking the time, Shawn! | 5 7 10 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoEpisode 199: Checking out the FLO TV personal TV device | Here's a look at the rather swish FLO TV personal television device that uses Qualcomm's FLO broadcast system to receive television signals wherever you are, without having to be plugged in to an aerial of cable system. This device allows you to get a selection of television channels anywhere in America. (You do need to be reasonably nearby a metropolitan area -- don't expect FLO TV to work in the middle of a nowhere -- although they reckon they've got at least 200m Americans covered). Have a look at the video and see what you think. I deliberately didn't read the manual when having a look at the device so you'll see me discovering the features naturally. | 30 6 10 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoEpisode 162: Meffys Outstanding Contribution Award for Mr Touchscreen | Every year, the Meffys recognise the outstanding contribution of an industry pioneer. This year, the inventor of the touchscreen, Andrew Tsu of Synaptics, received the award. Here's what the award announcement had to say: Dr. Andrew Hsu created the complex technology “Transparent Projected Capacitive Touch Screen” which is the basis for the modern touchscreen handset. Dr. Hsu’s groundbreaking technology has revolutionised the mobile media landscape, turning the modern day smartphone into a key media discovery and consumption touch point. In 1999, Dr Hsu filed his ground-breaking patent and spent the next seven years trying to convince the industry to adopt the technology. In 2006, handset manufacturer LG trialled it for the first time on their Prada phone, predating the iPhone. Dr Hsu’s employer since 1996, Synaptics, in the Silicon Valley, is one of the leading suppliers of Projected Capacitive Touch technology to handset manufacturers worldwide. Congratulations Andrew... and thank you, I'm absolutely delighted we're able to use the fruits of your labour every day. | 36 | VideoEpisode 160: Hands-on with the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini | I've been loving the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini ever since I caught sight of it at Mobile World Congress back in February. It's all about the size. The Mini really is small -- it's basically the same height and width as a credit card, and about 1.5cm thick. And it's a full featured Android phone with a 5 megapixel camera along with 3G HSPA. Genius. | 39 | VideoEpisode 157: A look at the Sony Ericsson X10 | I sat down with the Sony Ericsson X10 and had a little play with it on camera. I like the device a lot. If you're a standard user, I think you'll enjoy most aspects of the phone. If you are a geek like me, some of the social networking features that work nicely for normal folk don't quite work when you've hundreds of tweets flying past every minute, so I aimed to evaluate the device in that regard. I also pointed out that you should definitely consider keeping a charger at work if you're aiming to use the X10 'in anger' -- like most phones of it's calibre, it needs a lot of juice across the day to keep it's gorgeous screen bright and the data feeds flowing. | 2 6 10 | Free | View In iTunes

| 49 | VideoEpisode 149: David Wood speculates on the future of (mobile) technology | In the previous episode, 148, we talked to David about Mobile World Congress and the trends and themes he was witnessing. After we finished the interview, he had a little bit more time so I grabbed the opportunity to ask David what his top 3 sci-fi movies were. What follows is an absolutely fascinating 'real-time' riff from David on where he sees the future going -- in terms of technology augmentation -- and what to do about the human race becoming far too reliant on technology that may well turn against us. Or that we simply couldn't do without. You can find out more about David and his technology consultancy at DeltaWisdom.com. Get him on Twitter: @dw2 David's got a fascinating event coming up this month called Humanity Plus. I took advantage of the opportunity to put him in front of the camera and ask him some questions, including: * What was his first mobile phone? * How did he get interested in Symbian? (There were some broken bones involved) * Why do you like the community-led approach of open systems? * Just how frustrating does he find it when the uninformed ask, 'Is Nokia/Symbian dead?' * Who won the Smartphone wars?
