In the valley of the blind...

Just what is Monocle? A style bible for urban planners - or an in-flight magazine for people who don't fly? Sometimes, it plays at reporting serious news, but Monocle lacks the gravitas or timeliness to keep pace with serious news outlets. It defaults, therefore, to being a lifestyle publication, mixing bulletins on consumer items with pretentious lists, trying to define what is fashionable for impressionable readers. It may be the only magazine that has invented its own country, just so that the editors could populate it with fantasy citizens utilising make-believe public transport, and put it on the cover. It's horrible - and yet you can't look away.

A fantiastic new media brand

I purchased the very first edition of the Monocle magazine on a business trip. I had heard nothing about it, but just thought it looked interesting. I recognised the publisher as the creator of Wallpaper magazine, which I have long admired. Well, I was blown away. It was superbly designed, intelligently edited and structured, and offered an excellent range and quailty of reading material. I devoured the entire thing, and ever since have loved this publication. But of course Monocle is more than a magazine - it's web presence is just as rewarding as it's printed media, and these pod casts are a superb compliment to the articles and images elsewhere. I cannot recommend the Monocle experience enough.

Nothing else quite like it

Some people just don't get Monocle but that's what's so great about it. Diverse, always original and focussed on the stories the rest of the media deem unworthy for audiences hooked on a diet of celebrity culture and tales of human misery. Monocle is fresh, forthright and not afraid to present a different point view to the mainstream. Monocle joins the FT, Economist and Casa Brutus as my essential media picks.
