ExplicitNew Noise - 24.01.12 | The first New Noise podcast of 2012 gathers up some of the songs I've been listening to relentlessly over the past month or so (the tracks from the Bathetic Records Expressway compilation, Sinkane, Hospitality, Altarboy, Amateur Best, Coolrunnings and Way Yes) alongside a few of the best things I’ve discovered within the past week (Constant Mongrel, Schoolboy Q, Cross Record). Originally I'd decided to give over 100% of the podcast to flagging up the songs I'd been enjoying over Christmas and January – principally all the new stuff I'd played on the 6music shows (the main reason for the absence of a new New Noise) – but while putting it together last Friday I couldn't help feeling that it needed a few fresh bits too. So once you've had a listen, head over to http://newnoise.tumblr.com and you'll find another list of all the other songs I played on the radio but didn't have space to include on the podcast, complete with links. Thanks for listening. See you next week. Honestly. New Noise: 24th January 2012 (intro). William Cody Watson 'Hand on My Knee' (Bathetic Records) from free 'Expressway' compilation 1. Constant Mongrel 'Reflex' (80/81 / RIP Society) from album 'Everything Goes Wrong' due April 2. Sinkane 'Jeeper Creeper' (-) from forthcoming album 'Mars' 3. Altarboy 'Crap ft LL Caspi' (Wonder Wet) 12" single out now [via Keytars & Violins] 4. Hospitality 'Eighth Avenue' (Merge) from album 'Hospitality' out 31st January [download track from Fluxblog] 5. Tonstartssbandht 'Dad Beating Up Dudes Downtown (Orlando, 1992)' (Bathetic Records) from free 'Expressway' compilation [download here] 6. Amateur Best 'Be Happy' (Double Denim) aa-side single out now 7. ScHoolBoy Q 'There He Go' (Top Dawg) from album 'Habits & Contradictions' out now 8. Coolrunnings 'Spirit of the High' (LebensStrasse Records) from album out 13th Feb 9. Cross Record 'In A Volcano' (Bandcamp) from album 'Ring Bell' out now [via Bandcamp] 10. CleanNew Noise - 09.12.11 | This is a turbo podcast. I started compiling it at 8am this morning and managed to get it recorded, edited and uploaded etc within 3 hours - a new personal best. I'm most likely now listening to these songs (loudly) on repeat while bombing down the M4 to Minehead for ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas. Obviously, then, you'll find included a few of the many, many things I'm excited to see at Butlins over the weekend (namely Hot Snakes, Caribou, Roll The Dice and Thank You), along with other new stuff, such as the glorious return of AU, a short sharp/daft shock from new Sub Pop project Full Toilet, disturbingly special audio chocolate from Zack Christ, Hookworms (swiped from an excellent new free Gringo Records sampler), and the very welcome arrival of fresh Royalty. There's also something brand new from New Noise favourites Breathe Out – a new aa-side made in aid of Shelter. Spend spare pence in the name of charity if you can. New Noise: 9th December 2011 1. AU 'Solid Gold' (Leaf) single out 9th Jan, from album 'Both Lights' out in March 2. Hot Snakes 'Automatic Midnight (John Peel session version, tx November 18, 2004)' from 'Peel Sessions' 7" (2005) 3. Zack Christ 'Steadybeat Holidays (Old Beat)' [via Soundcloud] 4. Thank You '1-2-3 Bad' (Thrill Jockey) from album 'Golden Worry' out now 5. Royalty 'Cookie Dough' (Five Easy Pieces) from 'Purple Nights' EP out now 6. Hookworms 'Teen Dreams' (Gringo Records/Faux Discx) from ltd. 'Hookworms' 12" EP out now, also from free Gringo Records sampler 7. Breathe Out 'White Chalk Cross' (via Bandcamp) part of aa-side download single out now, all proceeds to Shelter 8. Junior Boys 'You'll' Improve Me (Caribou Remix)' (Domino) from 12" single out now 9. Full Toilet 'Keys, Wallet, Phone, Gun' (Sub Pop) from album 'Full Toilet' out now 10. CleanNew Noise - 03.12.11 | So December arrives and we find ourselves mired in another end of year Best Of list season - a clamourous annual shoutfest which seems to break into its intriguing, yet ungainly and slightly backward stride even earlier with each passing year. With that in mind - and hopefully without sounding like I am trying to flog you a can of Lynx Africa – here are ten new songs cobbled together in an attempt to help you try and maintain at least a modicum of freshness. New Noise: 3rd December 2011 1. Zammuto 'FUC-3PO' (Make Mine) from EP out 26th December 2. Silver Dapple 'M'sorry' (Bandcamp) from album 'English Girlfriend' out now [via Said The Gramophone] 3. J£ZUS MILLION 'Benefits' (Soundcloud) [via Lost Lost Lost] 4. Young Man 'Low' (Frenchkiss) from album 'Ideas of Distance' out now 5. ExplicitNew Noise - 25.11.11 | Here’s a podcast I put together a week ago but was unable to record because I contracted tonsillitis. What a bummer. Having spent half a week in bed, head lifted from the gushing musical stream, to me now this stuff sounds even more fresh and exciting than it did pre gland-swell. The footwork jungle herein should be singled out for special services to recuperation. Tell me when and where you listen: I honestly find your context fascinating. CleanNew Noise - 11.11.11 | Open your ears for another hour-long audio excursion, which in the main seems to reflect a fairly melancholy mood on my part. That is except for two of the most exhilarating musical moments of the year so far, both of which surfaced online within the last few days – brand new songs by Factory Floor and Hans Peter Lindstrøm. As ever, notes, comments and suggestions are gladly received, via @jonhillcock on Twitter or email - ilikenewnoise@gmail.com. New Noise: 11th November 2011 (intro.) ExplicitNew Noise - 28.10.11 | Sea Weeds are a Minneapolis duo, one half of which is Lizzie Carolan of Total Babe, (a band whose chipper, twee-pop songs I played repeatedly on the radio a couple of winters ago). When news of a new project arrived in my inbox from the label this week I anticipated something good, but not quite this good. Fall Boi is one of two free downloads preceding the imminent release of a full length, and loads the front end of this week’s podcast with weighty swoon, drenched as it is with sumptuous orchestral tension. It might appeal to anyone who this week has been enjoying the new Summer Camp album, or perhaps the welcome return of Mazzy Star. From there, I finally get the chance to share the A-side of PET’s second single - Middle Child Syndrome, something brand new from the upcoming Dauwd EP, a brilliantly paced cut from the free Gonjasufi EP which surfaced this week and a Regina-meets-Joanna-meets-Scout album closer from Samantha Crain. Elsewhere Krampfhaft serves up a distinctive hypnotic Dutch blend of rhythmic mastery with Makin’ Magic, there’s a total bruiser from the epic new Altered Natives record, and the heartbreaking chorus of Lover’s Island by Joel Brandt is sure to be swimming around your mind for at least a week. Things come to a close much as they begun: with a duo who deal in swooping crescendo, only unlike Sea Weed’s opener, Slow Dance by London’s Hunt in Pairs grapples with a rising undercurrent of electronic clicks, whirrs and thuds. Finally, I must flag up the complete and utter pop perfection from The Proper Ornaments, who I also ought to thank for indirectly introducing me to a deliciously sinister song by The Free Design from 1967, which presumably gave them their name. New Noise: 28th October 2011 1. Sea Weeds ‘Fall Boi’ (SoTM) from album ‘Fur Coast’ out 31st October 2. PET ‘Middle Child Syndrome’ (Bandcamp) single out 7th November 3. Dauwd ‘What’s There’ (Pictures Music) from ‘What’s There’ EP out 21st November 4. Gonjasufi ‘Eatfish (ft. Blu)’ (Hydroshare) from ‘The Ninth Inning’ EP out now [free via Hydroshare] 5. Samantha Crain ‘Toothpicks’ (Ramseur) from album ‘You (Understood)’ out 7th Nov (in UK) 6. Krampfhaft ‘Makin’ Magic’ (Rwina) from ‘Makin’ Magic’ EP out now 7. The Proper Ornaments ‘Who Thought?’ (No Pain in Pop) from ‘The Proper Ornaments’ EP out 28th November 8. Altered Natives ‘Galactic’ (Eye4Eye) from album ‘Tenement Yard Volume 2’ out now 9. Joel Brandt ‘Lovers’ Island’ (Bandcamp) from ‘The Wind & The Waves’ EP [download via Said The Gramophone] 10. ExplicitNew Noise - 20.10.11 | In a break with recent form it’s a new New Noise on a Thursday. What a novelty. Included in this week’s collection, (ideally suited to chunky listening systems): deep dark sonic exploration from the likes of Pariah, Peaking Lights and LA’s Eras, Cleveland’s Gap Dream invites us to spend time with a mysterious loner on 'My Other Man', Belfast’s Girls Names and Melbourne’s Twerps demonstrate immaculate songwriting chops and Vanilla smoothes out the rough with six minutes of sumptuous space-hop. There’s also more Nova Scotian crunch: a shot of woozy garage blues from duo Cousins - sounding like some sort of delicious Clinic/Thickfreakness-era Black Keys hybrid - and brand new Zomby. That’s brand. New. Zomby. New Noise: 20th October 2011 1. Doldrums ‘I’m Sitting Up Here in My Satellite’ (No Pain in Pop) from ‘Empire Sound’ EP out 31st October 2. Zomby ‘Labyrinth’ (4AD) from ltd. edition white vinyl ‘Nothing’ EP out November 3. Gold Panda ‘An Iceberg Hurled Northward Through Clouds (Peaking Lights Vocal Remix)’ [d/l via Soundcloud] 4. ExplicitNew Noise - 14.10.11 | There’s quite a bit of guitar on this week’s podcast. Nova Scotia’s masters of cracked indie pop Quaker Parents make a thrilling return, along with five combined minutes of bouncing garage surf pop from the LA’s Fidlar and Hollows of Chicago, plus an outstanding, (and previously unheard) track from the awesome imminent debut album from True Panther’s Bay Area trio Wet Illustrated. Sufjan fans might be fond of ‘Maps’ by underground lo-fi folk man Little Kid, which makes a neat bedfellow alongside a somewhat topical pick off the new Sea Pinks record. There’s also something meaty and electronic from a remote corner of Russia courtesy of Art Crime, the weird, warped and sprawling future hip hop of Pyramid Vritra, an electrifying cover of Portishead’s ‘Chase The Tear’ by No Pain in Pop’s Doldrums, and the very (very) welcome return of Ela Orleans, who provides what I think might be my favourite ever New Noise opener. Oh, and I also need your opinion about some music that I can’t quite make up my mind about. I’m anticipating an extreme response either way. New Noise: 13th October 2011 1. Ela Orleans ‘Planet Mars’ (La Station Radar/Atelier Ciseaux) from album ‘Mars Is Heaven’ out 19th October 2. Doldrums ‘Chase The Tear’ (Portishead cover) (Amnesty International/XL) b-side of ltd. ‘Chase The Tear’ 12” out 14th November 3. Wet Illustrated ‘Saints’ (True Panther Sounds) from album ‘1x1x1’ out 25th October 4. Pyramid Vritra ‘Untitled ft K.C 2.0’ (Stroll On) from album ‘The Story of Marsha Lotus’ out 21st November [via Prefix] 5. Quaker Parents ‘Teeshirt’ (Hot Money) from forthcoming split cassette with Dream Friends [via Weird Canada] 6. Art Crime ‘Nobody Can Breathe on the Moon’ (716) Forever & Never’ [via Unholy Rhythms] 7. Fidlar ‘Oh’ (White Iris) from 7” album ‘DIYDUI’ out now [via Everybody Taste] 8. Hollows ‘Hot Sand’ (Soft Power) ltd 7” out 17th October 9. Little Kid ‘Map’ (-) from ‘Map’ EP out now [via Bandcamp] 10. ExplicitNew Noise - 09.10.11 | "This is the creature we made and then dressed in the winter. Laughing at looks we would get with true even tempers. It would sleep in our beds and would sit at the table content. And on car rides it never whined about stupid cassettes. Even if we spent all day lounging on couches, for better or worse its presence made me feel accomplished. When it posed for our parents their pride just came bubbling out. With a stunning awareness it put the right words in my mouth. This is the creature." This week’s New Noise podcast is dedicated to Jessie ‘Babs’ Read, who would most definitely have hated the music it contains, but nevertheless maintained a dignified silence. New Noise: 9th October 2011 1. Happy People ‘Brooklyn’ (-) from free ‘HP EP’ out now [via Soundcloud] 2. Stay + ‘Fever’ (RAMP) single out 10th November 3. Thee Ludds ‘Where To Begin’ [via Song, By Toad] 4. Xavier León ‘Slow Down’ (-) [via Lost Lost Lost] 5. Chris Read 'Sons D'Afrique' (Breakin’ Bread) single out now 6. King Krule ‘The Noose of Jah City’ (True Panther) from ‘King Krule’ EP out 8th November 7. Gem Club ‘Twins’ (Hardly Art) from album ‘Breakers’ out now 8. Crushed Beaks ‘Sun Dogs’ (Too Pure Singles Club) b-side of single out 21st November 9. Bwana ‘When There Is Nothing Left’ (-) 10. ExplicitNew Noise - 30.09.11 | “..and then you step outside in the sunshine, and you can’t believe you would ever go underground… that’s crazy!”, sings Eleanor Friedberger on 'Roosevelt Island', a song on this week’s podcast. Though I’m most likely taking the line utterly out of its intended context, it’s one that resonated with me as I walked along in the London sunshine today. Every week I fret enormously over the music I include. Is it too bleak? Is it too pop? Is it too awkward? Is it too try-hard? Is it too limp? Is it too straight? Is it too grandiose? Is it too underground? Is it too overground? My podcast is called 'New Noise' (a name I regretted approximately a week after choosing it in 2006). I’m sure there are plenty of people who arrive hoping to hear something more akin to the Refused classic - after which it is named - and quickly leave. I know there are people who fast-forward the vocal-free electronic inclusions each week, probably wondering what on earth it is I like about them. Then I’m sure there are those who baulk at even the merest hint of a hook or melody. That’s if they listen at all. Last night, in a mildly drunken, frustrated humid haze at about 1am, having fruitlessly searched all week for the goods, I reluctantly placed what I’d found into playlist, stuck it on my phone and called it a night, pretty unsatisfied with my haul. This morning, travelling into London on a phenomenally bright and beautiful Autumn day, I listened to the 15 songs again. Jesus. Each and every one sounded amazing. This all proves a few things: 1) context is everything. 2) I worry too much. 3) My own fickleness sickens me. I hope you find something you like, even if the sun’s not out while you listen. New Noise: 30th September 2011 1. TEETH ‘Flowers (Gross Magic Remix)’ [via Earmilk] 2. Eleanor Friedberger ‘Roosevelt Island’ (Merge) from album ‘Last Summer’ out 14th November (UK) 3. PZLD ‘Never Better’ (Top Billin) [via XLR8R] 4. Xeno & Oaklander ‘Autumn’s Edge’ (Wierd) from album ‘Sets & Lights’ out over 17th October 5. Great Dads ‘Ladies Knight’ (Bandcamp) from free ‘Crunk Goblins’ EP [via Get Off The Coast] 6. Birdy ‘People Help The People (Two Inch Punch Rework)’ (Soundcloud) 7. xxxy ‘Think Twice’ (free via Soundcloud for limited time) [via Abeano) 8. Tessa & The Typecast ‘Straight on ‘til Morning’ (MGM) from ‘Lemons’ EP out Oct 14th (Australia) 9. Witch Cult ‘Deteriorate’ (Holy Roar) from forthcoming one sided ltd ‘Witch Cult’ 12” 10. CleanNew Noise - 23.09.11 | With Peggy Sue delivering the musical goods on last week’s podcast, a fortnight of adding songs to a New Noise potentials desktop doc. left me with a long glittering list of shiny diamonds. Having sifted out the flawed pretenders we’re left with the following: a glossy slice of bubbling greatness from Lapalux; the very welcome return of Earlies/Late Cord man John Mark Lapham - this time with DM Stith - as The Revival Hour; a scything post-riot beast from DRMCNT and brand new Tough Loveliness courtesy of London’s Weird Dreams. Then there’s Jonwayne, weighing in with killer rhymes laced over a Vanguards sample. Fairewell and TV Girl offer their own unique hints at pop greatness, and Sacred Harp very nearly threaten to complete music itself with distinctive, shimmering Norwegian majesty. New Jersey’s Real Estate also present us with a second taster from their upcoming debut for Domino, included at the 11th hour when I was forced to pull an original selection at the very last minute. For this reason, (being unable to re-record the link at this stage on a Friday night), you’ll notice I mysteriously make absolutely no reference to it whatsoever on the podcast. All that, and I’m finally able to share a brilliantly sinister take on Love Buzz by Edinburgh’s PET, this week’s opener, which I’ve been impatiently spinning to myself with no small amount of repressed glee for a few weeks now. Back in (just!) seven days. New Noise: Friday 23rd September 2011 1. PET ‘Love Buzz’ (Bandcamp) b-side of single out 5th November 2. The Revival Hour ‘Run Away’ (Secretly Canadian) b-side of single out 14th November 3. DRMCNT ‘Ballin’ (T-Reks) free download [via T-Reks] 4. Weird Dreams ‘Holding Nails’ (Tough Love) single out 31st October 5. Jonwayne ‘Just A Minute’ (-) from ‘I Don’t Care’ mixtape [via Sonic Router] 6. Explicitnewnoise160911 - peggysuespecial.mp3 | In January 2007 I contacted Brighton duo Peggy Sue and The Pirates asking to play a song of theirs – ‘The New Song’ - on a new podcast I’d just started making: New Noise. Since then, the band have released an EP, slightly changed their name, gained a member, signed to Wichita records and released an album: 2010’s ‘Fossils & Other Phantoms’. This week, 18 months on, Peggy Sue released the follow up: ‘Acrobats’. The album – produced by John Parish – has been well received, variously described as ‘a brooding monster’, ‘open and honest … deeply shy and brooding’, and ‘a huge step forward’. But do the band agree? Having been afforded the opportunity to interview Katy Young, Rosa Slade and Olly Joyce a couple of times in the past, on this New Noise Special I attempt to dig a little deeper. As well as talking to the band collectively about the new record and its reception I wanted to try and explore more about each member’s individual role in the outfit, and so asked to interview each of them separately, too. Along with a few selections from the new album, Katy, Rosa and Olly also pick songs by the likes of PJ Harvey, Neil Young, Department of Eagles, Townes Van Zandt and Chad VanGaalen. New Noise, Peggy Sue Special: 16th September 2011 1. Peggy Sue ‘Cut My Teeth’ (Wichita) from album ‘Acrobats’ 2. Peggy Sue & The Pirates ‘The New Song’ (demo) 3. PJ Harvey ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ (Island, 1993) from ‘Rid of Me’ 4. Peggy Sue ‘Boxes’ (Wichita) from album ‘Acrobats’ 5. Townes Van Zandt ‘Waiting ‘Round To Die’ (Poppy, 1968) from album ‘For The Sake of the Song’ 6. Throwing Muses ‘Teller’ (4AD, 1995) from album ‘University’ 7. Chad VanGaalen ‘Peace on the Rise’ (Sub Pop) from album ‘Diaper Island’ 8. Neil Young ‘Vampire Blues’ (Reprise, 1974) from album ‘On The Beach’ 9. Department of Eagles ‘While We’re Young’ (American Dust, 2010) from album ‘Archive 2003-2006’ 10. ExplicitNew Noise - 10.09.11 | As I allude to in one of this week’s wind-filled wordburps, (or ‘links’ as some call them) this New Noise contains a last minute replacement, crammed in at the eleventh hour when I realised mustard wasn’t quite being cut - lightly dented even - by something I was going to include. Listen in to hear what got the nod instead, and why. I also mention that this podcast could well have included 10, 10 minute expansive, dreamy instrumentals*. For whatever reason I think I’ve been one of those sort of moods all week. “Jon is a daydreamer,” read one of my old school reports. “He must learn to apply himself and stop wasting time if he is to succeed in any capacity”. As I finally get around to posting this - at 7.32pm on a Saturday evening - I concede that Sir probably had a point. Sadly I couldn’t blame The Field when I was 15. *It doesn’t. New Noise: 10th September 2011 1. Wintercoats ‘Working on a Dream’ (Cascine) from ‘Sketches’ EP out 27th September [download track via Soundcloud] 2. Hospitality ‘Friends of Friends’ (Merge) from album out 2012 [download via Said The Gramophone) 3. Blawan ‘What You Do With What You Have’ (R&S) single out 3rd October 4. The Intellectuals ‘Troppo Odio’ (S**t Music For S**t People) from album ‘In The Middle of Darkwhere’ out now 5. Das Racist ‘Shut Up Man (ft. CleanNew Noise - 02.09.11 | I got back on the horse. Granted it may be a knackered, slightly lame old beast but boy it felt good to fill more minutes wheezing out irrelevant dreck about songs I’ve become obsessed with: ten pieces of music I believe to be filled to the brim with majesty. There’s something sublime from the new M83 double album; outrageously good new new wave from Rats on Rafts; a leg melting piece of dream-house heaven from Recloose; new HEALTH, (that’s new HEALTH); a future classic in the making by Liverpool’s Death Masks; a slice of pop dynamite from Fear of Men; broken romance from Norway’s Machine Birds; dirty bass guitar grinds from Cardiff’s Kutosis and one of the most enchanting pieces of music you’ll hear all year by Tasseomancy. http://newnoise.tumblr.com New Noise: 2nd September 2011 1. ExplicitNew Noise - 19.08.11 | “In Back to Future, Marty McFly goes back to 1955,” said Danny Baker this morning on 5Live. “But it was a mistake. He'd actually set the controls to arrive in the future: the 26th October 2010.” On a related note, I would now like to ask you to spin your own minds back in time. But not very far. It is the afternoon of Friday 19th August 2011. You’ve just had an amazing sandwich for lunch, a hefty, unhealthy beast glooped in mayo, but what the hell, it’s Friday! You’re dreaming of the weekend: a night out tonight; a bit of football tomorrow, perhaps. As an Arsenal fan you’re envisaging a welcome change in fortune, a long-awaited right turn for Arsene and a glorious home win against Liverpool! Imagine! All you’ve got to do before heading off is tie up a few loose ends and, oh… what’s this? It’s 2.20pm and a new New Noise podcast has arrived. Enjoy the rest of your Friday, and make sure you don’t spend your entire night editing, only to forget to back up your work. You might lose the lot and then have to start all over again tomorrow. That really would be irritating, you might even end up missing Danny Baker on the radio. New Noise: 19th August 2011 1. ExplicitNew Noise - 12.08.11 | A barn-full of beautiful music is gone. Support PIAS and critically affected independent record labels however you can. CleanNew Noise - 03.08.11 - Field Day Special | Now in its fifth year celebrated annual music festival Field Day returns to London’s Victoria Park this Saturday with its largest, most eclectic bill yet. On this week’s New Noise Podcast I spend an hour in the company of event organiser Tom Baker, during which I look to find out a bit more about the man himself – his background, passions and personal music taste - and also ponder what on earth might drive a person to get involved in setting up such a musically bold music festival in the middle of the capital. Along with a few of the bands included in this year’s line up Tom also shares the kind of music that inspired him to move to London and get a job in the music industry in the first place, plus a few songs that helped him on his way to establishing his own event promotions organisation; Eat Your Own Ears. New Noise Field Day Special: 3rd August 2011 1. The Horrors ‘I Can See Through You’ (XL) from album ‘Skying’ 2. Aphex Twin ‘Alberto Balsam’ (Warp, 1995) from album ‘I Care Because You Do’ 3. ExplicitNew Noise - 14.07.11 | Holidays are brilliant. Except for the fact that you usually find yourself with twice as much stuff to squeeze in before you finally get to sod off to wherever it is you’re going. And so I find myself sat watching a slow upload bar edge across the screen at 2.04am Thursday night. I had planned to head off at around 8am Friday morning. Before I go just a quick mention that I'm on BBC 6 Music next week – covering Tom Ravenscroft on two July Fridays: 22nd and 29th, more details about which can be heard in this podcast. I also wrote my first new New Noise Live column for Clash Magazine this week which should appear in the next issue, out soon. No podcast next Thursday so this is a bumper bonus holiday version. See you on the 28th with what should be a Field Day Special. New Noise: Thursday 14th July 2011 1. Blue Belt ‘E.Y.B (Eff Yr Blog)’ (via Ear Milk) from album ‘Blue Belt’ out 26th July 2. ExplicitNew Noise - 08.07.11 | Ok, so I’m not exactly finishing Friday inwardly stricken with the knowledge that 99.9% of the British population believe me to be the indestructible epitome of modern moral bankruptcy, but still, I've had a long ol’ week. Since we last spoke I’ve been to quite a few gigs. About nine live ‘experiences’ in all. And somewhat helpfully - for a knackered, cold-ridden sloth the wrong side of 30 – it felt like the giddy, gaudy essence of tribal teen spirit teased me at every turn. From the anarchic ADD menace of the OFWGKTA circus to a gladdening resurgence of explosive razor sharp guitar pop courtesy of Evans The Death, I. Felt. Old. At one point an audacious grinning little foetus quite blatantly and unapologetically took the p**s out of me for ordering a water at the bar. Before I had the chance to explain myself he’d bounded off like a demented Relentless-injected kitten. I contemplated leaving this callous gig game for good. Age concern aside, this week’s NN has also taken about three times as long to edit together because I’ve been forced to use a different bit of software. Horrifically boring but true, and more than a bit bothersome for a tired, grumpy old gimmer like me. Ultimately, it’s now Friday night. I’m running behind by approximately 24 hours, and I dribble out this blurb whilst sat on the sofa with a cup of Lemsip and half a Dairy Milk. Man, it feels good. Hopefully you’ll feel the same when you hear what’s lurking in this week’s tardy but fresh collection of life affirming, ageless new music. Thanks to any listeners or subscribers who’ve newly chanced upon this podcast via last week’s Sub Pop special. Hopefully you’ll not be put off by the fact that someone as erudite, funny and interesting as Megan Jasper isn’t here every week. And congratulations go to Kenny Close of Richmond, Virginia who correctly emailed to say that the business located beneath the Sub Pop offices is a bakery. Kenny bags himself a lovely bunch of shiny brand new Sub Pop albums New Noise Podcast: 8th July 2011 1. Virgo Four ‘It’s A Crime (Caribou Mix)’ (Rush Hour) from 12” EP out now 2. ExplicitNew Noise - 30.06.11 - Sub Pop Special | Of her stint as receptionist at Sub Pop in the early 90s, Megan Jasper says, ‘I knew everything that was happening all the time… the good, the bad, and everything in between’. Over 20 years later, and now vice president of the label, Megan was good enough to spend an hour with me in London last week to discuss all manner of Sub Pop-related business. From first getting in the door as ‘a crusty punk with a big ass mohawk’, to surviving and learning from the best and worst moments of the label’s tumultuous history. From sharing a cigarette on the roof with the boss every night to holding office parties when the bosses were away. Discover which band was so explosive on stage that the owner of the Seattle club in which they were playing took it upon himself to risk his own livelihood (and the lives of his punters), to lock everyone in past curfew, thus keeping the police out. And which legendary 90s frontman had the nickname ‘Chemo Boy’ at school? Find out in this, the New Noise Sub Pop Special podcast, which also features 10 incredible songs picked by Megan herself from Sub Pop’s past, present and future. To celebrate the Sub Pop New Noise Special here’s an added bonus: a competition to win yourself a bag of delicious Sub Pop swag including a bunch of new releases, stickers and the like. To enter, answer the following question: The Sub Pop office is in a shared brick building in downtown Seattle, but what sort of sweet-smelling business can be found downstairs, as referred to by Megan in the podcast? Email your answer and address, with ‘SUB POP COMP’ in the subject line, to ilikenewnoise@gmail.com by 12pm Thursday 7th July 2011. One winner will be chosen at random from the correct entries. CleanNew Noise - 23.06.11 | There seems to be an air of menace about this week’s New Noise podcast. I’m not entirely sure why. From the off we sink into the other-worldly swirl of Planningtorock’s astounding rework of Creep’s ‘You’, and from there the clouds never really manage to part. Once The Twerps are done sticking their own twist on garage rock, we’re knee deep in dark disco with Guy Andrews, gasping for air in the thick funk of Hot Head Show, and downright petrified of the outrageously exciting Black Flag-sampling Death Grips. Even Little Eva’s pop classic ‘The Locomotion’ is given it’s own sinister chug thanks to U.S Girls, The British Public are all riffs and wry eyebrows, while Gala Drop at least try to tease out the sun with their textured Portugese patterns. By the time Thousands prettily ponder sewn up mouths and the onset of rain and age in their enchanting ‘Everything Turned Upside Down’, it feels like we’ve literally reached the end. Thank God then for the song’s climactic mantra, ‘See the sun go on and on’, which finally provides us with that lingering, hopeful hug we’ve so desperately craved. Those in need of a further pick-me-up should hang in there. Today I recorded another special edition New Noise podcast. It includes stunning music, inspiring tales of rock and roll legend, fantastically bad language and lots of laughter. See you in a week. New Noise Podcast: 23rd June 2011 1. Creep 'You (Planningtorock remix)' (via RCRD LBL) 2. The Twerps ‘She Didn’t Know’ (via Altered Zones) 3. Guy Andrews ‘Recollect’ (-) stream at Soundcloud 4. CleanNew Noise - 16.06.11 | With Toronto’s NXNE Music and Film Festival taking place this week, along with the announcement of this year’s Polaris Prize longlist earlier tonight, I suppose this New Noise was always destined to include a sizeable chunk of Canadian goodness. Accordingly Pat Jordache and Volcano Playground make for an exceptional pair of musical bookends. Elsewhere, absorb intense electronic pleasure by virtue of Holy Other, Tropics and Samaritan, allow the cold-handed massage of Soft Metals to ice your stifled blood, and be bundled into a boot (or trunk) for a euphoric freeway joyride with The War On Drugs. There’s also brand new Washed Out and the most talked about band/man of the moment – Brighton’s Gross Magic, but I've just lost the will to spin out any more hyperbolic bullcack. Your ears are appreciated. New Noise Podcast: 16th June 2011 1. Pat Jordache ‘Get It (I Know You’re Going To)’ (Constellation) from album ‘Future Songs’ out now 2. Gross Magic ‘Sweetest Touch’ (Sounds of Sweet Nothing) from ‘Teen Jamz’ EP out 8th August 3. Holy Other ‘Know Where’ (Tri Angle) from ‘With U’ EP out now 4. CleanNew Noise - 10.06.11 | Late last Sunday night, with a crackle, a hiss, and the unmistakable opening plucks of Pavement’s Stereo, the Domino Radio soundsytem whirred into action. And what a week it’s been. Wall to wall incredible music - new, old, weird, wonderful and, in some cases, exclusive. Most of all different. Just today I’ve been awed by the Alex Chilton-inspired show by About Group, a fifth and final breakfast show with a difference from James Endeacott, the concluding selection of sublime future music courtesy of Jack Shankly’s Liquid Lunch and a guest spot from Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood, which kicked off with Thomas Mapfumo and ended with Four Tet, by way of J Dilla and Ween. There are still two full days to go, and once it’s finished the whole lot - all 168 or so hours - will be available to hear on listen again for at least a month. See it as a challenge. I too was fortunate enough to be invited on to present a two hour New Noise, on Tuesday lunchtime, a 10 song portion of which comprises this week’s podcast. New Noise Podcast: 10th June 2011 (Intro.) Scott Churchman ‘Things Will Always Go Your Way’ (self-released) out now via Bandcamp 1. Little Black Ant ‘I’m Happy To Be Sad’ (Soundcloud) 2. CleanNew Noise - 02.06.11 | I’ve been struggling to work out what to write here for a couple of minutes now. Regrettably my train of thought has been comprehensively derailed by a slow, creeping nausea, brought on by inadvertent exposure to ‘The Lazy Song’ by Bruno Mars, which is currently being piped into the canteen I am in. It truly is a lyrical marvel. Today I don't feel like doing anything I just wanna lay in my bed Don't feel like pickin' up my phone So leave a message at the tone 'Cause today I swear I'm not doin' anythin' I'm gonna kick my feet up Then stare at the fan Turn the tv on Throw my hand in my pants Nobody's gon' tell me I can't Yes, that really is Bruno loudly and very proudly declaring his private right to go knuckle to knacker. Screw you, Mummy Mars! But the line that truly jolts my core is that which documents his audacious and resolute determination to escape the pressures of modern life by retreating to his room to ‘stare at the fan’. I think this song is a cry for help. Bruno is lost. Somebody needs to help Bruno. I’m scared for Bruno. Anyway, after last week’s marginally heavier foray into the Pink Mist universe the first New Noise of June gets back to the simple business of plucking and placing ten incongruent songs in a row, spanning a mere 45 minutes. Among the nuggets, something brand new from 19 year old Londoner Slime and a cut from the upcoming Battles album, featuring the vocal talents of one Gary Numan. Lyrical references to the meditative merits of household appliances are few and far between. New Noise: Thursday 2nd June 2011 1. Super Wild Horses ‘Black Book’ (Goner) split 7” out now 2. Caged Animals ‘Girls on Medication’ (Lucky Number) single out 4th July 3. Slime ‘First Cape’ (Tough Love) from ‘Increases’ EP out 27th June 4. Weekend ‘End Times’ (Slumberland) single out 6th June 5. CleanNew Noise - 27.05.11 - Pink Mist Special | In the second New Noise Special I’m joined in the studio by Kev Douch (Big Scary Monsters), Simon Morley (Blood & Biscuits) and Alex Fitzpatrick (Holy Roar), who have together formed new umbrella collective Pink Mist. Along with individual interviews with each label boss - exploring the history, ethos and practicalities of running their own staunchly independent imprint - the three Pink Mist founders discuss all manner of topics, including the origins and ideology of the new project, plus secret meetings, embarrassing musical histories, looking after legends on the road, tackling a bloated modern music industry head on and the notion of being DIY, but as part of a group. Among the ten songs included: new tracks from the likes of Tall Ships, Daggers, Three Trapped Tigers and Rosa Valle, alongside older favourites chosen by each guest, including Bear vs Shark, Torche and Björk. New Noise Pink Mist Special: Friday 27th May 2011 1. Tall Ships ‘Hit The Floor’ (Big Scary Monsters/Blood & Biscuits) single out 13th June 2. CleanNew Noise - 19.05.11 | Contending with a gargantuan ATP comedown and a busy week in super humid London was never going to be easy, and thus this week’s New Noise trundles home like a wayward adolescent, out long past their bedtime. Pretty much all usual avenues of discovery seemed a bit flat and barren this week, (probably down to me more than them), which makes this 50 minute trek through the ten I liked the most just a little bit sweeter. Right now, to my retuned, normal ears, they sound bloody incredible. Along with the songs, I also shout about a couple of highly exciting music events taking place this weekend in both London and New York. Events driven by the notion of music that challenges the norm and refuses to exist in the background. Michael Azerrad. Indie label bosses everywhere. I salute you. Outsider music ftw. New Noise: Thursday 19th May 2011 (Intro.) Delicate Steve ‘Welcome-Begin’ (self-released) from album ‘Wondervision’ out now 1. ExplicitNew Noise - 12.05.11 | Tomorrow (or later today, even) I’m off to Minehead for the last ever Spring ATP Festival, this time curated by Animal Collective. In anticipation of that find in this week’s New Noise a couple of the artists I’m hoping to see, among them Ear Pwr and Zomby, whose excellent ‘Natalia’s Song’ is finally coming out officially as a limited 10” on 4AD on Monday. Alongside beguiling and brilliant new songs by the likes Family, Michael Kiwanuka, Stealing Sheep and I Break Horses, there are also tasters from highly anticipated incoming albums by Memory Tapes, Trouble Books & Mark McGuire and Austra. And probably most exciting of the lot – I get to play the utterly killer new remix of Junior Boys’ ‘Banana Ripple’, by The Field. New Noise: Thursday 12th May 2011 1. ExplicitNew Noise - 05.05.11 | Just got back from seeing PS I Love You play at the Lexington in front of an audience of around 50 people, tops. But what a lucky 50 we were. Audacious axework, incredible songs and a very fine line in sweatbands. Between us, a friend and I made off with two 12”s, one 7” and a t-shirt (and only that was because they’d run out of mediums meaning we couldn’t have one each). Further illustrating our gleeful reaction to the show we were even compelled to ask somewhat bashful frontman Paul Saulnier to sign our plastic at the merch stall. Thrillingly he obliged, though it should be noted his indelible, scant ‘P/S’ does look like someone’s scrawled ‘PIS’ on the label. What a band. Of course ‘Facelove’ appeared on last week’s New Noise, I only hope I get to enjoy witnessing one of the tracks from this week’s podcast performed live at some stage in the next few weeks. Anyway, sorry for the garbled words, it’s late, I’m hungry, and I’m buzzing on empty. It’s all I’ve got in my brain. Hope you find something you like, and cheers for listening. Jon P/S - Unbecoming and marginally obscene as it is to openly beg for stars, if you enjoy the New Noise podcast I’d hugely appreciate an iTunes rating, or even maybe a sentence review, however brief. It all helps. New Noise: Thursday 5th May 2011 1. Fixers ‘Another Lost Apache’ (Young & Lost Club) from ‘Here Comes 2001 So Let's All Head for the Sun’ EP out 9th May 2. ExplicitNew Noise - 28.04.11 | This week’s New Noise podcast is brought to you in association with copious amounts of dark chocolate, the sulky, slightly pathetic yet often inspirational skill of Spain’s finest football teams, an eight hour DJ masterclass from Erol Alkan, a week that never seem to get going, a deliciously dark and engaging Timber Timbre gig, the United film, the Mojo Ramones issue, a brilliant new album from The Leisure Society, yet more obsession with the recent album by The Wave Pictures, and lots of ice cold gin and tonic. Tips, hints and suggestions of both the musical and professional variety are encouraged - ilikenewnoise@gmail.com / twitter.com/jonhillcock Cheers Jon New Noise: Thursday 28th April 2011 1. ExplicitNew Noise - 21.04.11 | Perhaps the most fun, (and often overlooked) aspect of Record Store Day is the bit where you get home and carefully remove each of your beloved new records from their sleeves, place them on the deck and drop the needle. On this week’s podcast I invite you to share in the crackles and grooves of a few my own RSD purchases, and to have your mind politely blown by brand new music from the likes of Chad VanGaalen, Gardens & Villa, Amusement, Triptides, Iceage, and a quite beautiful rework of a recent Austra single by Vondelpark. Enjoy the long weekend. New Noise: Thursday 21st April 2011 (Intro) Metronomy ‘Picking Up For You’ (Because) b-side of ‘The Look’ ltd. #rsd11 7” 1. ExplicitNew Noise - 14.04.11 | After last week’s foray into Captured territory this week’s New Noise podcast returns to a familiar format, namely 10 (or 11) slices of confrontational, divergent magnificence, unwillingly bundled together and forced to try and make the best of it. Not unlike Manchester City. Only with considerably less cash and sulk. Within! Heavenly instrumental jams courtesy of Old King, Gyratory System and Three Trapped Tigers, who burst in with a knockout first airing of a track from their long awaited debut album. That’s alongside a few roasted gems made to stare at the sun to, courtesy of All Tiny Creatures, Sun Glitters and Sepalcure (messing excellently with School of Seven Bells), plus Californian majesty from Young Hunting. Bang in some dynamite bars from obscenely talented 18 year old Lewis and two guitar pop belters from either end of this fine island - in the shape of Bos Angeles and Copy Haho - and you’ll be 50 minutes closer to the end of the day. This week’s edition also marks the return of weekly service. Having dabbled (badly) with being a 10 day affair, I’ve decided that Thursday’s are now the new New Noise day. Until Thursday, then. New Noise: 14th April 2011 1. Old King ‘Sun Down Finger’ (via The Pigeon Post) 2. All Tiny Creatures ‘Aviation Class’ (Hometapes) from album ‘Harbors’ out now (download track via Glo-Fi Must Die) 3. ExplicitNew Noise - 24.03.11 | The subject of weather is often regarded the preserve of those who have little else to talk about so I apologise unreservedly for my upcoming words, devoid as they are of illuminating sav, world widening wit or imagination. HOW sunny is it?! Seriously, though? Jesus it’s lovely out there. F*cking love the sun. Some of the songs on this week’s New Noise suit the Spring sun more than others, particularly those from Dream Hits, Idiot Glee and London Elektricity. Fortunately, for those who run from hot daylight faster than you can say ‘ginger goth’, there’s a healthy bit of contemplative darkness and angst in there too from Timber Timbre, D. Paris and Elliot Whale Boy. Also, I forgot to mention this week, the next podcast, (due next week), is going to be a little bit different. Just a one off. See you then, enjoy the sun. ExplicitNew Noise - 02.03.11 | Dark and light. Warm and cold. Bleak and bright. CleanNew Noise - 18.02.11 | Fellow Kent dweller Charles Darwin apparently once said “If I had my life to live over again, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once a week... The loss of these tastes is a loss of happiness, and may possibly be injurious to the intellect, and more probably to the moral character, by enfeebling the emotional part of our nature.” I wonder what he would have made of 'Bizniss' by tUnE-yArDs? If you haven't heard it then press play right now. If you have heard it, then you'll have already pressed play and be 40 seconds in. Charlie Darwin also gets a shout on this week's podcast, along with 10 (11) pieces of music that knocked me sideways over the course of the past ten days. Speaking of which, because I'm desperately rubbish at keeping up at the moment and constantly feel like I'm behind, I've decided to lengthen the time between each podcast to ten days rather than seven. Not the best, but I hardly think you'll suffer a major loss of happiness, an injured intellect or enfeebled moral character. At least you won't if you listen to tUnE-yArDs. ExplicitNew Noise - 29.01.11 | Amid tax return hell, treats on hold and cash-strapped slacking a brand new New Noise appears on a Saturday night. (Yes, this is how I spent my Saturday night). New Women. A drummer’s project. Big Pants. A Young Man and a band I’m anxious to see on Monday night. It makes for an up and down sort of listen. And the last 30 seconds of Brokenchord’s ‘Girl of 13 Summers’ makes me well up. Full details and links at http://newnoise.tumblr.com Jon New Noise: Saturday 29th January 2011 (Intro.) CleanNew Noise - 21.01.11 | Late again. Does it matter? Probably not. I consider the opening song of each New Noise podcast to be of vital importance and use a song's 'opener potential' as a bit of a barometer to work out if I like something enough to include it. If I don't think it'll work up front, it probably shouldn't go in. This week, for whatever fussy reason, I struggled for openers. The search for sufficient material took far longer than usual, and thus partly explains this delayed arrival. The plus side is that I'm stupidly excited about each and every one of the beautiful little nuggets I eventually found. And the opener? Jeez, WHAT an opener. Hope you agree, and thanks for listening. ExplicitNew Noise - 05.01.11 | The first New Noise of 2011 arrives with a bit of a sniff, a couple of moans and ten new songs chosen specifically to make your ears glow. To begin, two unannounced Christmas treats from Gorillaz and Pete and the Pirates (whose new album finally lurks on the horizon *resists urge to use multiple exclamation marks*). That’s before the enigmatic Deptford Goth slobbers vocoder all over dreamy synths, Nicole Schneit (aka Air Waves) delivers a gem made for radio, the beginning of the end for Stricken City (sniff.. wail) and a popping, bouncing stroll in an LA park from Tokimonsta. Bringing things into the home straight Nottingham’s finest Fists, a sun drenched closer from the new Ducktails album (out next Monday), more beautiful r n b-based mystery from Surrey/London’s Vondelpark (with crackles straight from my record deck) and a ramshackle hint of whimsy from New Yorkers The Beets. Happy New Year. Jon New Noise: Wednesday 5th January 2011 1. Gorillaz ‘California and the Slipping of the Sun’ (Parlophone) from album ‘The Fall’ out now 2. CleanNew Noise - 15.12.10 | On the whole I find Christmas a bit of a drag when it comes to music. I think working in various retail outlets in the past has withered my enthusiasm for festive songs to such an extent that I instinctively and irrationally baulk at anything with a sleigh bell on it (except for Sleigh Bells). And this endless End of Year List attack is getting to me too. Silly moaning aside, such lists at least provide us with an opportunity to flag up things we may have missed. The twisted rhythms of Altered Native's excellent album 'Tenement Yard Volume 1' helped it land at number Nine in FACT magazine's excellent list, and I've included its closing track on this week's New Noise. Other than that (nearly) everything on the new podcast is fresh and new, (at least to my ears), and might hopefully provide 50 minutes or so of festive respite. Thanks for listening Jon New Noise Podcast, 15th December 2010: Tracklist 1. Puro Instict ‘Stilyagi (ft Ariel Pink)’ (Mexican Summer) 2. Yuck ‘Holing Out’ (Fat Possum/Pharmacy) 3. CleanNew Noise - 29.11.10 | Before setting off on my latest 50 minute sound ramble, your ears should be greased and primed for the following: A slab of pioneering vintage 1991 Detroit techno from Martin Bonds - aka Real by Reel. Gloriously fresh new mutant house courtesy of Joy Orbison. Unknown Mortal Orchestra's joyous yet enigmatic slice of thrilling garage soul pop. Thuds and startling Hammond organ grinds from London Trogons. A killer lead single swiped from the breathtaking new Deerhoof album. Off key Velvets-indebted psycho hippy jangle from Atlanta's Carnivores. LoAF Recordings' new Edinburghian signing Ben Butler & Mousepad with a popping, fizzing, wonky synth wonder. Further 80s bassline borrowing pop thrills from the debut Games EP. An odd, almost sinister strange old uncle of a lounge tune by Cheapskate. My absolute favourite moment from Dagger Paths, the debut collection from the Wirral's dark lord of minimal, r&b-led heartbeat drone: Forest Swords And something else. Obviously. CleanNew Noise - 22.11.10 REMASTERED | **NOTE - REMASTERED VERSION** My absolute favourite song from Girls' new EP Broken Dreams Club is Carolina, which nestles right in the middle of this week's free New Noise podcast. Also making the final ten this week: oddball El Guincho-a-like samplers The Fantasies,a chrome and glitter pop beaut from Niki and The Dove, strung out slacker garage from highly exciting Atlantans Balkans, a looping, buzzing stomper from East London's James Delay, a genuine epic sliced right outta the middle of the ace 'new' Stereolab album, absorbing and intriguing warp hop electronics from Maryland's Maxmillian Dunbar, and to close; a dusted down Northern Soul nugget from 1966 by Motor City legend Melvin Davis. All this plus Ox Scapula weigh in with a shuddering slab of their Stoke hardcore, which conveniently follows something from a new album titled Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, by Mogwai, which was announced out of the blue on Friday of last week. Thanks for listening. Jon blog - http://newnoise.tumblr.com subscribe - iTunes twitter - @jonhillcock email - ilikenewnoise@gmail.com New Noise Podcast - 22nd November 2010: Tracklist 1. CleanNew Noise - 15.11.10 | This week's New Noise is brought to you with the help of a hangover from John Kennedy's The Remedy all dayer, Blue Moon Beer, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon in The Trip, porridge with the fruit bit from a Muller Corner chucked in, being finally comfortable with wearing big 'LOOK AT ME! I'M LISTENING TO MUSIC!' headphones in public, Dels smashing up the Barfly and rain. Lots and lots of lovely rain. Contained within the metaphorical walls of this week's audio excursion are Snow White samples, defunct Scottish hardcore, one of the most talked about hip hop productions of the moment, a pregnant pause, a couple of brilliant demos, a fair helping of actual noise and a warm, looping pop gem. There is also a song that might make you cry. Thanks for listening. Tell someone if you like it and stuff. Jon New Noise Podcast, 15th November 2010: Tracklist 1. Pogo 'Wishery' (-) download free from Pogomix.net 2. Fickle Public ‘Adam Hocing’ (Smalltown America) from mini album ‘Greatest Hits’ out 13th December 3. CleanNew Noise - 08.11.10 | After a week in the wilderness the New Noise podcast rudely bowls up out of the blue with a further 10 stabs of sonic wonder. At various points you will be recklessly tossed inapt chunks of punk, dub, pop, scratch, thud, jangle, screech, moan and Hammond. A more comprehensive tracklist follows below. As ever engaging correspondence of any note is welcome – launch emails in the direction of ilikenewnoise@gmail.com or bellow staccato missives at me via @jonhillcock. Thanks for listening. CleanNew Noise - 25.10.10 | This week's wholly free collection of New Noisettes include an Andy Votel-produced Gruff Rhys gem, a brand new single from The Neat, a dynamite demo from Leicester's We Three and the Death Rattle and a dreamy debut from Evan Voytas, which is easy listening in the best possible fashion. That's alongside experimental Aussie duo Lazy Dre, a very welcome free download from Kurt Vile, a 1981 underground synth-pop gem from RUTH, a highlight from Suuns recent debut album and a couple of lovely folk pop numbers from Shugo Tokumaru's upcoming fourth record. Also included, a new single from satisfyingly frenetic Leeds lot Pulled Apart by Horses. The band make the cut for two reasons: 1 - I love them like Rooney loves checking his balance, and 2 - I want to shout about a live radio session the band are doing this Friday from 7pm, on BBC 6 Music. With me as host. Tom Robinson is on holiday and I've been asked to cover him, meaning I'll also get to play lots of songs I like live on the radio for a couple of hours. If you can't get hold of me between now and Friday it'll be because I'm in a small room with a record player trying to work out what I should play first. Jon New Noise Podcast - 25th October 2010: Tracklist 1. Gruff Rhys ‘Shark Ridden Waters’ (free download from gruffrhys.com) 2. The Neat ‘Hips’ (Chewing Gum) single out 29th November. 3. ExplicitNew Noise - 18.10.10 | The New Noise bar swings opens its doors once again and lines up ten very different shots of ear liquor. Sip at the warm and creamy Ramadanman Refix of Jamie Woon's 'Night Air', choke on a scratchy kick in the throat courtesy of My Teenage Stride, wolf down a fiery mix of Polar Bear and Jyager, and... and that's enough of this distressing alcohol-based analogy. I think every song on here is amazing, I hope you like the taste of at least one or two. New Noise Tracklist: 18th October 2010 1. Parlovr ‘Heaven, Hell’ (from Said The Gramophone blog) 2. ExplicitNew Noise - 11.10.10 | Let's Wrestle are one of my favourites. Thus receiving news of their brand new single was akin to being invited to watch the rest of season four of Mad Men in one sitting, joined on comfortable sofa by Christina Hendricks and a limitless supply of tea and toasted cheese and ham sandwiches. I was pleased. Crushing Nerves is the sound of LW at their awkward adolescent best and a tantalising glimpse at the kind of thing they may or may not have been recently recorded in Steve Albini's Illinois studio (speaking of whom, this GQ interview in which he discusses the 'death of radio' is worth a look if you haven't already). Thanks to Stephen at Tough Love for letting me include it on this week's New Noise. Also on the new podcast the truly inspired Gun Fun from Warmest Chord's Slow Talk, a first play of a b-side by Seattle's Seapony, a whacked out belter from the new Teeth of the Sea album and the first taste of Darkstar's greatly anticipated debut album North. I also pluck some Randomer from the new Soul Jazz Future Bass compilation, pick a favourite from the Islet EP which is out this week and get to play the brand (brand brand) new Berlin inspired beauty from SEAMS - Hung Markets - which is available as a free download from his Bandcamp as of right now. It all follows something oddly wonderful, and forty years old, from Les Maledictus Sound. I hope you like them all as much as I do. Jon New Noise Tracklist: Monday 11th October 2010 1. Les Maledictus Sound 'Cambronne' (Finders Keepers) from 'Wedding Party' 7" out now 2. Let's Wrestle 'Crushing Nerves' (Tough Love) from split 7" single out 18th October 3. ExplicitNew Noise - 04.10.10 | Finally, in this - the first New Noise podcast of October 2010 - I get to whack out something from the sublime, free-to-download new White Denim album. (Never mind that I spent the days following the recording fretting over whether I picked the wrong one, just download it now and get lost in the lot). It'll be interesting to see how it compares to their official new album due out in a few months. Have they casually tossed away a gem? I'd love to know the politics and motive for the decision. Aside from the heroic Austin three-piece, I've included spliced and sampled briliance from Sweden's En Björnen, another drawn out dream from Diskjokke who's rejigged Crystal Fighters to great effect, and a beautiful, twinkling treat from Glasgow's Remember Remember. Free taster downloads also pop up from Brighton's superb Tall Ships and Montreal's Blue Hawaii, there's a knockout piece of lo-fi pop folk from Kerry Leatham and Peter Lyons, a single released this week from Leeds' DIY boy wonder James Owen Fender, and the most bewitching, intriguing, exciting, groundbreaking 5 minutes and 17 minutes of music I've been obsessed with all week, from James Blake. cheers for listening Jon Tracklist: New Noise - 4th October 2010 1. ExplicitNew Noise - 20.09.10 | This week's free New Noise podcast is full of new musical goodness from the likes of Darwin Deez - albeit reworked by SBTRKT - along with a genuinely brilliant new single from Crystal Stilts (think The Rat by The Walkmen with a slightly more garage noise pop bent. It's got THE BEST driving rhythm). Also former Crystal Stilt Frankie Rose pops up with her fellow Outs to deliver the ace 'Candy', Nova Scotia's Long Long Long become my official 'new favourite band', Warpaint justify the hype with a scintillating new free download, I've picked my winner from the new Das Racist mixtape, there's an eye-widening stomper from Four Tet remixing Brazil's Babe, Terror, a thoroughly stunning new song from The Radio Dept., something lovely from the debut Houses album and one of the most exciting and visceral new British bands I've heard in ages - Bastions. CleanNew Noise - 30.08.10 | Since 2006 Jon Hillcock's New Noise new music radio programme has evolved from a podcast into a radio show (on Xfm and NME Radio), to a mailout, and now into a fully downloadable free weekly pod/cloud/sound/music/noise-cast. contact: ilikenewnoise@gmail.com This week's blast of New Noise kicks off with an eight minute avalanche of snaps n' samples courtesy of Pretty Lights; primarily the work of Colorado native Derek Vincent Smith. Thereafter Everything Everything's fizzing skew-pop wonder 'QWERTY Finger' marks today's release of their peerless debut album, the sinister monotony of Italy's Husband lends things a touch of menace, and Chris Ward, aka Tropics, brings us back in from the cold with his woozy lead EP track 'Give It Up'. The lovely warm chug of Colorado's The Skeletones Four heralds the return of guitars, (along with parps and plonks of sporadic horns and piano), before a demo of Captured Tracks upcoming single release 'Party Talk' from Craft Spells, and Oberhofer's impossible-to-reference-without-sounding-like-a-tit ‘o0O0o0O0o’, which you'll most definitely be humming subconsciously for the rest of the week. Finally, ahead of the gentle enchantment of Londoner Keaton Henson and New York's Holy Spirits, listen carefully for the static and crackle of the superb Simon Bookish remix of Late of the Pier's 'Blueberry', played directly from the of the aa-side 12" Remix LP. It's a total winner (though it really doesn't make the wait for a second LOTP LP any easier). Comments, feedback and suggestions very welcome. Genius.
FINALLY!!! If you like new music but don't have the time to surf through endless mp3 blogs then get this. A great show on Xfm and NME Radio now condensed into the best 10 tracks you'll hear all week.
Good job JH.
Absolutely superb

Highly recommended.
Great mix of music. Little in the way of chat other than to give enough info on the artists. Likeable presenter.
