Podcast Description
Scottish media experts Scott Douglas and Peter Laing host a weekly discussion on the changing nature of news, public relations and communication. While examining journalism, public relations and the media in Scotland and the UK, they also cherry pick the most relevant news on social media from around the world. They chose the name Quiet News Day because it has meaning for both journalists and public relations people. It also reflects the changes being discussed, because in this digital era a Quiet News Day is now a thing of the past; something to be remembered fondly. The pair are uniquely placed to explain changes in the media for those still unsure how they might be affected. Since they have their hands full running busy and successful news, photography, video and public relations companies, both men fully understand how confusing the rapid online changes can be for those in business, as well as many in the media itself. This podcast is ideal for anybody who occasionally feel dazed by the sheer volume of information and advice being thrown at them and for PR people and journalists keen to get to grips with the new media. It offers reassurance that there is still a place for the newspapers, radio stations and TV channels we are already comfortable with, yet helps identify and explain the big changes underway. Scott is founder of Deadline Press & Picture Agency, while Peter is its Managing Editor and is credited with evolving it into Scotland’s most successful multimedia agency. Scott is also co-founder of Holyrood Partnership, one of the most successful PR agencies in Scotland and a leader in digital content and strategy.

CleanQuiet News Day Episode 08 - Festive edition of Scotland's journalism, PR and social media podcast | Chances are you’ll be getting some sort of Apple product as Christmas gift this year.So here’s our stocking filler to help you enjoy your new iPod or iPhone – the festive edition of QND (episode eight) to delight your ear buds. After a year of general gloom in traditional newsrooms, there may be some signs that journalists are turning a corner – mentally at least – and coming to terms with the new media landscape. It seems everyone now understands that advertising revenue won’t be replaced like for like. Despite Rupert Murdoch’s bluster, most people accept that putting all content behind paywalls is not the way forward. However there seems to be a growing consensus that some content can be charged for – meanwhile iPhone (and other smart phone) apps are providing more excitement on how to monetise content. In this week’s episode Scott and Shaun discuss numerous positive developments in the news sector, including an iPhone apps frenzy at Trinity Mirror and the Daily Mail. They also look at another potential revenue stream for news companies in the shape of e-reader subscriptions.Elsewhere there are more examples of Twitter and Facebook being used to help push readership, while Google’s new Fast Flip service may also provide a further shot in the arm.All topped off with a seasonal helping of newspaper chat with Greig Cameron – the chief reporter at weekly business title, Business 7SHOWNOTES AND LINKS INTERNET TV The BBC launches its internet enabled TV service, code-named Project Canvas http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/6606617/BBC-to-allow-internet-through-TV.html YEAR OF THE APPS Trinity Mirror Launches Series of iPhone Apps http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=1&storycode=44796&c=1 Daily Mail General Trust Plans Rollout of at Least 15 Apps http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=1&storycode=44798&c=1 TWITTER AND FACEBOOK REACH THE ESTABLISHMENT MEDIA Establishment financial bible The Economist has grand plans to move into social media in a big way: http://www.editorsweblog.org/multimedia/2009/12/economistcom_looks_to_become_more_social.php Bivings Report on US newspaper Twitter use: http://www.bivingsreport.com/2009/the-use-of-twitter-by-americas-newspapers/ Marketing Pilgrim breakdown of Bivings Report http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2009/12/how-newspapers-use-twitter.html Steve Davis UK media Twitter users list http://twitter.com/stedavies/uk-journalists OTHER DIGITAL LIFERAFTS FOR THE NEWS INDUSTRY Newspaper subscriptions through Sony e-reader http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/sony/6839632/Sony-adds-newspaper-subscriptions-to-ebook-reader.html Google Fast Flip – Newspaper Aggregator From Search Giant http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/pda/2009/dec/16/google-fast-flip INTERVIEW Scott and Shaun chat traditional and digital media with Greig Cameron, chief reporter at Business 7 http://www.business7.co.uk/ http://blogs.business7.co.uk/news/greig_cameron/ CONTACT US Email - quietnewsday@me.com Twitter - @quietnewsday | 23 12 09 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanQuiet News Day Episode #7 - Wednesday, December 16 | Quiet News Day hosts Scott Douglas and Shaun Milne open episode seven with a startling admission – they are often baffled by technology. However, before long the pair are soon discussing the news, PR and social media issues of the day – from the launch of Google’s iPhone rival to the rise of Twitter search in Google. They also discuss the rise to dominance of digital-enabled journalists in what would once have been considered ‘traditional newsrooms’. Changes in the PR world also come under scrutiny – with Scott exploring the rise of the ‘social media release’ and Shaun asking the difficult question about whether it means PR clients will have to pay more. While regular “Gamechanger” contributor Craig McGill is absent for a second consecutive week, his first Social Media Dinner also comes up for discussion. In a change to the usual format, the weekly guest interview slot is instead taken up with thumbcast chats with four people who attended the event. Eddie Pearson of the hugely successful Celtic Underground podcast shares a few tips; Maxine Finlay, the PR for two of Scotland’s biggest tourist attractions (Royal Zoological Society of Scotland) extols the benefits of Twitter; digital start-up entrepreneur Murray Cox tells why he’s launching Digital Mud, a social media monitoring and evaluation business; and journalist Victoria Raimes – feted as a trailblazer in bringing new media nous to the newsroom – explains how social media is helping her reporting career. SHOWNOTES AND LINKS Launch of the Google Device to Rival the iPhone Opening with news that Google’s new phone is now a reality: http://mashable.com/2009/12/12/google-phone-iphone/ Scott admits he’s been outsmarted in the search for a ‘smart phone’ and isn’t technically savvy enough to navigate through the huge and baffling amounts of information surrounding such devices. Survey Shows Tech Reliant Brits Are Still Technophobic Rather thoughtfully Shaun throws Scott a crumb of consolation in the shape of survey which shows the majority of Brits are still technophobic. http://mintelmarketing.cmail4.com/T/ViewEmail/y/BB29D8BE53E8C2DC/77B0D1284E8785500F8C96E86323F7F9 Twitter Results in Google Search Live during the discussion Scott and Shaun get sidetracked by the shiny new toy that is Google’s new offering which brings up most recent tweets related to a users search terms. Despite their technical shortcomings, Scott and Shaun like this! http://topnews.us/content/28851-google-adds-real-time-twitter-results-search-appliance Guardian Launches iPhone App With much online chat among Guardianistas around its new iPhone app, Shaun bought it to test. After sharing his (rather lovely) iPhone with envious Scott, the pair declare the app a hit – intuitive, easy to use and easy to navigate. The pair shrug off those critics who say the Guardian is wrong to charge for news that it is elsewhere offering for free. http://www.guardian.co.uk/help/insideguardian/2009/dec/10/guardian-iphone-app-launched#start-of-comments http://themediablog.typepad.com/the-media-blog/journalism/ http://www.guardian.co.uk/iphone Trinity Mirror’s New Head of Content Shaun highlights that Trinity Mirror Nationals division has appointed Matt Kelly to the new position of digital content director. CleanQuiet News Day - Episode 6 | Podcast hosts Scott Douglas and Shaun Milne set about their weekly conversation about all that’s happening in the world of PR, journalism and social media. Episode six sees them talking hamsters, watchdogs, Facebook news aggregation, pay walls, the Scotsman editor John McLellan’s words for the web. There's also an interview with Ruth Heath, the woman in charge of VisitScotland’s soon to be launched social media strategy - a must listen for anyone working with in-house PR and media teams LINKS AND SHOW NOTES TOXIC TOY HAMSTERS Scott raises the lack of coherent crisis management surrounding the news that Xmas must-have toy the Go Go Hamsters (Zhu Zhu hamsters in the US) are toxic. The claimse were made by US consumer group, the Good Guide. http://www.goodguide.com/ The toys exceed levels of a toxic chemical called Antimony (akin to cyanide). http://www.goodguide.com/products/280172-zhu-zhu-pets-hampster-mr-squiggles-light-brown The makers – a firm called Cepia LLC – trotted out a statement from CEO Russ Hornsby http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-365193 While the statement was reported during an Associated Press video it was text only - no audio, video or rich conten - from Cepia LLC. Meanhwile the Cepia website is Flash-based, with a long intro sequence and no updateable content (no blog, no forum, no Twitter or Facebook links). http://www.cepiallc.com/ Scott says he is astonished such a major American toymaker appears to be so far off they ball and says Cepia appear to have shot themselves in the foot with the lack of a Twitter, Facebook or YouTube presence. Instead, it appears the firm is relying on third party Twitter and Facebook sites, set up by people looking to profit from selling on the toys. While reportering the toxic claims, these do not appear to give any positive support to the toymaker: http://twitter.com/zhuzhuhamsters http://www.facebook.com/ZhuZhuPets?v=wall However, Scott did eventually find a dedicated site giving a more vigorous response on behalf of the company: http://www.zhuzhupets.com/ Both Scott and Shaun agreed the CEO of the toy firm was treading a dangerous line in citing his own kids - bringing up the case of Tory Agriculture minister John Gummer, who posed for the media feeding beefburgers to his six year old daughter, Cordelia at the height of the BSE crisis in 1990 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/369625.stm FACEBOOK LINKS UP WITH BIG FIVE TO PROTECT KIDS Scott reports that the world’s most popular social networking site has taken steps to protect children. Facebook has formed a board with five leading online safety groups - Common Sense Media, ConnectSafely, WiredSafety, Childnet International and The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI). Scott and Shaun discuss how Facebook plans to regularly meet with board members to review the existing safety resources it provides its users, develop new materials, and seek advice on general safety best practices on an ongoing basis. The first task of the board will be to oversee an overhaul of the safety content located in Facebook’s Help Center. The show hosts also discuss previous successes in this area by Facebook – last week the New York Attorney General’s office cited Facebook’s cooperation in identifying and disabling the accounts of registered sex offenders, and in early 2008, Facebook signed an agreement with 49 Attorneys General to help protect children from online predators. http://www.facebook.com/press/releases.php?p=133745 NEW AGENCIES UNITE FOR FACEBOOK SPECIAL REPORTS Shaun introduces discussion about fan pages created and managed by leading news agencies all over the world including Associated Press, Press Association, Canadian Press, Agence France-Presse, Duetsche Press, Kyodo News and others. Three thousand followers, environment related news stories, editorial blogs, mission statement, capacity for upload of images and video. Shaun | 15 12 09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Scott can be found at http://www.holyroodpr.co.uk or at http://scottdouglas.wordpress.com. Shaun leaves a sizeable online footprint at http://deadlinescotland.wordpress.com/ and also at http://milnemedia.typepad.com/ In a packed show, the pair discuss the announement by Johnston Press - owners of The Scotsman - that it intends to start experimenting with pay walls on six of its 300 UK newspaper titles. http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/story.asp?storycode=44700 The hosts also discuss The Sun newspapers hilarious new YouTube viral ad for its potential iPhone-killer handheld news delivery device. See the video here: http://www.holyroodpr.co.uk/index.php/blog/entry/the_suns_handheld_device_beats_the_iphone_all_ways_up/ Shaun gives a mention in dispatches to Fleet Street veteran Michael Binyon, writing his final piece for The Thunderer after 38 years with the paper http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_contributors/article6935569.ece As one success stories steps into well-deserved retirement, another rising star emerges. Scott and Shaun discuss the case of Hayley Parker, who made it from trainee reporter to newspaper editor in just three years. The conversation then turns to the old question on journalistic practice – and whether it is right or relevant to include the age of someone who is the subject of an article. http://rss.holdthefrontpage.co.uk/news/091130hayley.shtml Shaun then opens discussion on Telegraph editor Will Lewis’ move “upstairs” to head the newspaper’s “Euston Project” to increase its digital reach and share. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/nov/30/telegraph-digital-will-lewis-euston-project Scott brings up another digital news breakthrough – with the launch of a new initiative to connect citizen journalists with the broadcasters and online news media which may use their footage. Both Scott and Shaun welcome the launch of YouTube Direct. http://mashable.com/2009/11/17/youtube-direct/ Another video development is highlighted by Shaun – the advent of “BubbleTweet” which allows Twitter fans to insert short video into their profiles. http://www.bubbletweet.com/ Continuing on the Twitter theme, Scott and Shaun discuss a story which reports that “Twitter” was the most used word in the English language in 2009 – outstripping even “Obama”. http://mashable.com/2009/11/29/twitter-most-popular-word/ The QND hosts then introduce an interview with special guest JERRY WARD, the managing director of media monitoring specialist, Press Data. http://www.pressdata.co.uk/ After the interview, Scott and Shaun continue discussing an issue raised with Jerry Ward – whether a recent Facebook stunt by the Ikea store in Malmo, Sweden could be considered a success. The pair were surprised to find that a video related to the stunt had been pulled from YouTube by the creative agency involved. http://www.wikio.co.uk/video/2037356 However, at the time of creating these shownotes, the video had been returned to YouTube, this time with different music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TYy_3786bo Scott also introduced another Swedish-related success story – a highly engaging, entertaining and interactive video stunt to thank Swedes for paying their TV licensing fees. http://www.theviralmarketingblog.com/2009/11/thank-you-campaign-from-radiotjanst/ http://www.tackfilm.se/en/ Regular contributor Craig McGill was introduced with his weekly “Gamechanger” slot http://www.contently-managed.com/ ENDS | 2 12 09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Customer Reviews
Scotland's premier media podcast
Once you can get by the occasional mumbling from the hosts, QND very much offers the best media and new media commentary in Scotland. Shaun and Scott are both enthusiastic, knowledgeable and yet analytical enough to cover the big local and national topics well, and boast an impressive array of guests. Light years ahead of the competition north of the border, anyway.
