Clean159 In Flames Part 1 | Say what you will about the current incarnation of In Flames, but once upon a time they were leaders in the Gothenburg scene along with At The Gates and Dark Tranquility. They might have strayed a little along the way, but their early discography holds some gems that warrant discussion. For this episode we're joined by Monica Jackomino (ten years our junior) to discuss the early years of In Flames with two generations of metalheads. Clean158 High on Fire | From the ashes of Sleep, guitar maverick Matt Pike along with Des Kensel has carved an unmistakeable sonic identity of equal parts Mötorhead, Sabbath, 70s rock and fantasy themes ala Cirith Ungol and Dio with a propulsive rhythm section that is second to none. This episode we take a brief tour through the career of one of extreme music's most unlikely "success stories", High on Fire. Clean156 The Doom Occulta Brothers | It was a sad day when Immortal called it quits in 2003. But we didn't have to wait long until one of the Doom Occulta brothers came back with another frosty entry into the Blashyrkh cannon, with I. It incorporated the grim tone of Immortal, but added a triumphant/NWOBHM vibe that they hadn't really been explored before. The Popeye vocals and unusual riffing were still present, but you could still hear the soul of Immortal coming through. Then in 2009 Immortal rode back onto the scene with All Shall Fall, a more epic streamlined incarnation of their unique take on black metal. Expounding on the "Immortal sound" Demonaz unleashed The March of the Norse, which almost acts as a sister album to the afore mentioned All Shall Fall. The Doom Occulta brothers continue to Storm Through Red Clouds and Holocaust winds into the future... Clean155 At The Gates Part 2 | Perhaps one of the most important bands in extreme metal. From their avant-garde beginnings to their thrash-infused later output, they have blazed their own unique path. Their Slaughter of the Soul record influenced a whole new sub-genre of metal (for better or worse) and their music seems as vital now as when it was released. At The Gates are a band that are well overdue for an episode spotlight. Clean151 Pestilence | We don't often go to the Netherlands when coming up with show topics (although we should more often), but we thought it was high time that Pestilence got a little attention. Coming out of the mid-80s, they brought with them a thrash sensibility, but soon incorporated brutal/technical death metal elements, culminating in their Testimony of the Ancients album. This episode we're joined by frequent guest Chris Dick, as we navigate through their Consuming Impulse and Testimony of the Ancients records. Clean148 Witchery: The Toxine Years | Before the retro-Thrash revival of the 2000's, there were a handful of death metal bands channeling the genre's energy and aesthetics. Witchery brought elements from Teutonic thrash, NWOBHM and Mercyful Fate, while keeping the barbarity of death metal. Featuring members of Satanic Slaughter, Seance, The Haunted, Opeth and Mercyful Fate, Witchery is a virtual who's who of metal royalty. Clean147 Slayer: The Metal Blade Years | What more can be said about Slayer? Well, that's kinda what we thought too. This episode has been a longtime coming and we had a certain amount of hesitation due to the fact that so much has already been documented about the band, but we ended up having quite a bit to say about this early era. Along with Celtic Frost and Venom, Slayer are one of the most important bands to help shape the extreme metal world. Clean146 Trouble's Trouble | After last week's dose of black metal, we figured it was time to represent some true "white metal". Nearly 11 years into their career, Trouble jumped leaps and bounds with producer Rick Rubin on their self titled 1990 album. Similar to Kyuss, Trouble was a band that didn't fit into any scene and really was ahead of it's time. Alternative rock was rising, thrash was waning and the extreme metal scene was on the verge of some mainstream representation. Trouble were an island among these other scenes and until years later, this album wasn't really appreciated like it could have been. Now long out of print, Trouble's Trouble is ripe for reissue. Clean145 Craft | Black metal seems to be of of the most conservative of genres, but also one of the most innovative. Craft falls into the later. They approach their songwriting through the lens of lo fi black metal (ala Darkthrone/Burzum) but manage to retain a high production value that doesn't lessen the impact of the music with spit and polish. Born from the land of Bathory, but owes more to their Norwegian brethren, Craft make a compelling case for destroying all mankind and matter. Clean143 Voivod Part 1 | Not often can you say that a band sounds like nobody else. Voivod are one of the rare cases where it's true. Formed in 1982 in Canada, Voivod have run the gamut of extreme metal styles, but have alway retained a very unique dissonance and mythology that are distinctly their own. Clean142 Sahg | Culled from members of Gorgoroth, Audrey Horn and Manngard; Sahg blend doom, rock n roll and psychedelia into a seamless package that is deceptively simple. But simple doesn't mean simplistic. More streamlined and thoughtful. Similarly to Pig Destroyer, they craft riffs that you'd swear you've heard before, but you can't place them. We delve into their full 3 album discography on this episode and shed some light on a band that is criminally underrated. Clean137 Electric Wizard Part 1 | This week we tackle Electric Wizard, one of the most requested show topics in recent memory. Since their inception, they have continually defied expectation and have become the torchbearers of pushing the boundaries of doom and heavy music in general. Clean135 - Eucharist | Sweden seems to be our goto country, so it's no surprise we're back to discuss one of the obscure gems of the early 90s... Eucharist. An anomaly in the melodic death metal scene, they have more in common with At The Gates Red in the Sky... than Dark Tranquility or In Flames, using weird time signatures and unconventional riffs. We basically go through every era of their career in this crucial episode. Clean134 Primordial Part 1 | Ireland isn't a country often associated with the extreme metal scene. But there is one notable exception... Primordial. The struggles and oppression they have overcome as a people is clearly felt through Primordial's lyrics, songwriting and imagery. Similar to the "viking metal" movement, they have used national pride and history as a basis for their entire career. In this first part we explore their first four records. Clean133 Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas | Everyone knows the controversy surrounding Mayhem and the death of Euronymous at the hand of Varg Vikernes and the suicide of previous singer Dead, but beyond the sensationalism there is is a fantastic musical document that remains. This episode we discuss the merits of one of the most important black metal albums of all time. The riffing, unconventional songwriting and one of the most impressive drum performances up to that point all add up to a wealth of influence that is still heard to this day. Clean132 Tucker-Era Morbid Angel | Morbid Angel is quite possibly the most important band in extreme metal, influencing countless black and death metal acts and reshaping the possibilities of extreme music. In recent years they have been flying under-the-radar with the promise of an album reuniting the classic David Vincent-era lineup. With such lofty expectations of what the new music might hold, fans were clamoring to hear Morbid Angel back at their best. But as many have sadly discovered, their new album sounds like an out of touch attempt at recapturing their classic inventiveness, but in a sadly pathetic way. So this (along with the advice of Albert Mudrian) we decided to reexamine the Steve Tucker-era Morbid Angel and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and creativity in this later era output. Clean131 Overkill | It's been a long time coming, but we thought it was high time that we brought Overkill into the discussion. Considered one of the originators of thrash, yet often relegated to a second tier act. Similar to Exodus, circumstances prevented them from releasing a record until well after Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax already gained prominence in the scene. This episode we discuss the first 5 albums and hopefully shine a well deserved light on this crucial thrash band. Clean129 Witchfinder General | Back to some of the roots of extreme metal this week. Black Sabbath might be the first thing to come to mind when you hear Witchfinder General, but beyond some surface similarities, they are quite different beasts. Coming out of the NWOBHM scene, they didn't really fit in with their peers and were only a blip on the radar, until later touted as fuel for the later doom scene eruption in the late 80s. We discuss their blatant influence on Cathedral as well as how their lyrical content and image were a precursor to modern doom acts like Electric Wizard. Clean128 The Notwist | We're trying something a little different this week. We often discuss and relate non-metal acts into our music conversations, but this time we're going to make a non-metal band the subject of this week's show. While definitely having metallic elements, Germany's The Notwist encompass multiple genres into their music and have a pervasive "unsettling" undertone that makes them a good (although not obvious) choice for our first foray into discussing a non-metal band on the show. Clean127 House of Usher/Crystal Age | We're digging into the vault on this one. Two Swedish bands that had humble beginnings, but contained members that would go on to be a part of bands that would shape the genre. House of Usher, a band with little output, but a huge reputation within Swedish death metal circles and featured Martin Larsson who would go onto At The Gates and Stefan Källarsson from Crypt of Kerberos. Then we have Crystal Age, an abrasive, technical death metal outfit with a penchant for Star Wars lyrics featuring Oscar Dronjak, who would later go on to form Hammerfall and had a stint in Ceremonial Oath, and drummer Hans Nilsson, from Dimension Zero and Liers in Wait, was also on the Far Beyond Divine Horizons. Clean126 Deftones | This time we're going back to a dark day in metal... 1995. Or at least that's where our story begins, in southern California amidst a scene with the unfortunate moniker of nu-metal. While I still don't understand the success of this sub genre, there was one bright spot in an otherwise, to be frank, shitty scene: The Deftones. They quickly surpassed all their contemporaries in depth, concept and execution and have become an entity completely of their own making. Sit back as we discuss the career of a flower that was born from s**t. Clean123 Dismember - Like an Ever Flowing Stream | Continuing where we left off last week with Autopsy, Dismember picks up the death/gore torch and elevates it to heights unseen in pure visceral, raw, searing sound. It's safe to say there wouldn't be a Dismember without Autopsy, at least not the band we know today. Dismember adopted some frameworks that Autopsy built, but ended up taking their sound to a level still unmatched. They were the counter to Entombed's low end, filthy guitar tone. They brought the high-gain, "treble" end of the spectrum, which stands to this day as one of the most confrontational and bludgeoning recordings ever laid to tape. This episode we discuss Dismember's Like an Ever Flowing Stream... Clean122 Autopsy - Severed Survival | One of the most crucial influences on the Swedish death metal scene of the late 80s, Autopsy pulled in elements of doom, hardcore, rock n roll and death metal to create a sound that was all their own. From their early hardcore punk roots, they have blazeded trails that entire genres have followed. While some phases of their career have been more successful than others, they have managed to sculpt a career that runs the sonic gamut of extreme music and remain relevant for nearly 30 years. This episode we are pleased to be joined by Napalm Death enthusiast, Albert Mudrian (Editor-in-chief of Decibel Magazine) to discuss the first decade or so of their career. Clean117 Exodus | Thrash has the Big 4, but that group is missing one of the bands that embodies the term to its core... Exodus. Clean116 Pentagram Part 2 | Picking up where we left off last time.. The Victor Griffin, Joe Hasselvander and Martin Swaney-era of Pentagram. A decidedly different band than their 70s incarnation. The rock n roll has been bled out and the doom has really began to overtake their sound. Liebling's vocals aren't quite as bombastic as before, but what they create on the next 3 records is a blueprint for the next generation of doom purveyors. Clean115 Pentagram Part 1 | Since the 70s Pentagram have flown the flag of doom. Founded by Bobby Liebling and Geof O'Keefe as a heavy rock act influenced by the likes of Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Sir Lord Baltimore and UFO, they spent the next 6 years churning out some of the best rock n roll to ever enter an ear canal. The tragedy is they only issued a few singles and never released a proper album until 1985 with a completely different lineup, only Liebling remaining. The self-titled debut began to lay the groundwork for what we think of as the 2nd wave of doom. This episode we discuss their early work, including their First Daze Here compilation album that features unreleased work from 1971-76 and their self-titled (also known as Relentless). Clean113 Unanimated | We're back to our favorite metal country, Sweden. This time to discuss one of the underrated acts that got overshadowed by the likes of Dissection and their ilk, Unanimated. Their pedigree is quite impressive, with members of Merciless, Entombed, Desultory, Dismember, General Surgery, Watain and Carbonized calling Unanimated home. They only put out two records, one in 1993 another in 1995, then came a 14-year hiatus. In 2009 they released the fantastic In the Light of Darkness album, which further cemented their place on the blackened death throne. With over a decade disbanded, Unanimated return with all the vigor and fire of a band half their age. Clean107 Canadian Metal Part 2: Annihilator "Alice in Hell" | 1989. The tail end of the thrash scene; with one notable exception... Annihilator. The Alice in Hell record, recorded in 1988 and released in 1989 on Roadrunner, was a culmination of the entire genre. Embodying elements of speed metal, hardcore punk, proto-death metal and every permutation of thrash, Alice in Hell is a fitting goodbye to a scene that brought extreme metal to a wider audience and made way for the underground to rise. This entry of the Canadian Metal series, we discuss the album track-by-track in an effort to better understand our neighbors to the North's vast wealth of metal skills and influence. Clean104 Post-Carcass | Everyone loves Carcass. Well up to a certain point in their career. I can safely state that from Reek of Putrefaction to Heartwork, most would agree that that they could do no wrong (I'm omitting the nut jobs who think they sold out with Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious). After the relative success of Heartwork and their signing to Columbia, they were posed to set the world on fire as a mainstream death metal band. But as they state themselves "I Told You So (Corporate Rock Really Does Suck)." Many were highly critical of their swansong, the aptly names Swansong, eventually released by Earache after Columbia shelved it, but now over 10 years later we thought it was worth giving it a second chance. Some see Swansong as a blemish to an otherwise flawless career, and to others this was their entry point to Carcass which opened the door to discovering their earlier output. This episode we reflect on Carcass' post-Heartwork output, including the Blackstar project (the Swansong lineup, sans Bill Steer + Mark "Griff" Griffiths ex-Cathedral). Clean103 Grave - Into the Early Grave | Back to the early 1990s again. This time we're discuss seminal Swedish Death Metal act, Grave. Formed in 1986 as Corpse, then changed to the equally necrotic moniker Putrefaction, then finalizing as Grave in 1988. Often lumped into the Stockholm scene, Grave arose from Visby, a town on the island of Gotland just off the eastern coast of Sweden. This relative isolation is reflected in their sound, which was much more brutal and heavy (in a sonic sense). The trademarks of their sound was ultra-downtuned guitars and guttural vocals. More akin to American death metal than their Swedish peers. This episode we go through their early catalog, or their "classic" lineup consisting of Ola Lindgren, Jens "Jensa" Paulsson, and J¶rgen Sandstr¶m. Their later output is quite good as well (with exception of the Hating Life LP), which we may explore in a future show. Clean093 Crucial Years in Metal 2001 | Continuing our countdown of Crucial Years in Metal, we arrive at 2001. It was a year of reinventions and innovation that the metal world greatly needed to maintain relevance in critics circles. Bands like Cathedral came back with a fusion of all their various styles consolidated into a stripped down, crushingly heavy magnum opus, Pig Destroyer had refreshed grind, Enslaved had taken their songwriting to the next level and Katatonia refined their style into a perfect amalgam of indie rock, metal and everything in between. Add to that Converge's Jane Doe and 2001 stands out in the annals of metal history as a banner year. Clean092 Crucial Years in Metal 1988 | Continuing our countdown of Crucial Years in Metal, we arrive at 1988. A year when thrash was approaching it's zenith and grindcore and death metal were beginning their rise. The rapidly approaching reign of Earache Records was only a few years away and the tent pole bands of Carcass and Napalm Death were changing as quickly as they released records. Within a few short years we'd see the rise of Swedish Death Metal scene, black metal's second coming and the apparent decline of the whole genre. Turbulent years are on the horizon, but 1988 marked a year of beginnings and endings in the various genres and sub-genres of the metal umbrella. Clean091 Crucial Years in Metal: 1985 | Yes. Everyone has a top list of something it seems, and we're no different. Our approach to this cliche of journalism is highlighting landmark years in metal, with an emphasis on years that had an abundant of seminal releases. This also means that we're dealing in volume of records released in certain years, so we're missing some crucial LPs in our lists, but most of those we've covered or will cover in upcoming shows. So now it begins... number 10 in our list: 1985. (Disclaimer: we're trying to approach this from an extreme metal standpoint, not just metal in general. If that were the case, we'd be starting back in the 70s.) Aces High (4:40) Iron Maiden - Live After Death TALKSET 1 Mechanix (4:21) Megadeth - Killing is My Business... and Business is Good! Endless Pain (3:32) Kreator - Endless Pain Fear No Evil (4:12) Trouble - Psalm 9 (formerly 'Trouble') A.I.R. Clean089 Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse | Generally accepted as one of the handful of pioneers of the second wave of Black Metal, Emperorâ??s In the Nightside Eclipse barely saw the light of day. With the majority of itâ??s ranks either in prison or under suspicion, In the Nightside Eclipse is truely a perfect storm. Luckily a series of seemingly band events culminated into itâ??s delayed release, which at the time seemed like a detriment, today it seemed to have been released at an ideal time to usher in the coming wave of symphonic black metal. For a much more exhaustive examination if the albumâ??s production, check out Precious Metal from DaCapo press. Clean087 Hypocrisy Part 1 | Weâ??re back to Sweden again, but this time with the well know, yet often overlooked Hypocrisy. Formed in 1990 after a stint in Florida with Malevolant Creation, the Tägtgren-helmed machine has churned out 11 full length albums. Some better than others, but some havenâ??t been given the proper attention due to several turds in a row. Beyond Hypocrisy, Peter Tägtgren has an impressive producer resume, with the likes of Dimmu Borgirâ??s Enthroned Darkness Triumphant, Immortalâ??s At The Heart of Winter & Celtic Frostâ??s Monotheist among others. After a slump in the early 2000s, Hypocrisy are back with a renewed vigor and a back to basics approach. Clean083 MC5 | In an attempt to dig deeper into the origins of the metal genre we thought it would be interesting to delve into one of the most energetic bands in the history of, well music... the MC5! Just as our punk show examined the connections between metal and punk, in this episode we broaden our scope out a bit from the narrow confines of extreme metal and take a sonic history lesson with the help of Mike Johnston. The set list we compiled is heavy on rare and hard to find live versions, so even if you are familiar with the MC5, there are bound to be some gems you haven't heard before. This week Iâ??m joined by Kevin Cross, illustrator and musician (Big Rig, Pitch Black, Nerve Agents and others) as we heal the rift of the punk and metal brotherhood. Clean072 Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane | In our further blackened death coverage (and, man do we love genre names) we conclude our discussion on Dissection, with their Storm of the Lightâ??s Bane record. Considered a benchmark album, and rightly so, Stormâ?¦ still holds up as one of the genre defining classics of the 90s. Dissection did have a brief return to the scene with Reinkaos and Maha Kali, but neither captured the fire and blazing ferocity as their first two records, so weâ??re ending our coverage here. Donâ??t get me wrong, there are some good songs on the a fore mentioned albums, but not enough in our minds to justify another show. So enjoy the blackened metal of death with Dissection. Clean070 Ulver: The Black Metal Trilogie | Since we love black metal so much and the seasons are changing, leading into the grim frostbitten kingdoms of winter, we thought we'd throw another Norway show at you. This week is Ulver. Many may know the versatile front man, Garm from his many side projects or his more electronic endeavors, but this episode we'll be focusing on their "Black Metal Trilogie." Clean069 Thorns | Back to Norway again-- this time the very influential, yet marginally known act... Thorns. For all intents and purposes Thorns is the musical vehicle for Snorre W. Ruch, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and served 8 years for being an accomplice in Euronymous' (Mayhem) murder, which added to his lack of wide visibility in the scene until his 2001 self titled album. Previously to his 2001 debut, he released Thorns vs Emperor, in an attempt to reintroduce himself to the scene as a prelude to Thorns. Ruch has also been a longtime collaborator with Satyricon, contributed to writing De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and in a general sense his unique approach to sonic barbarity and unconventional songwriting can be felt throughout the black metal and extreme metal scenes. Clean067 Dissection - The Somberlain | After a brief hiatus for Labor Day, weâ??re back with another album spotlight episodeâ??Dissection The Somberlain. For a band with such a brief career, they left a lasting impression and presence within the extreme metal scene still felt today. With their Storm of the Lightâ??s Bane album and At The Gatesâ?? Slaughter of the Soul, they effectively closed the door on what was thought possible in death metal. This is the time when many death metal acts were really shedding their extreme roots and venturing into more mainstream territory. This episode we focus on their debut record, The Somberlain, a hungry, ambitious, fury of a album which injected elements of thrash, black metal and an obscene amount of melody. Clean064 Entombed - Left Hand Path | Quite possibly one of the most important albums in extreme metal, Entombedâ??s Left Hand Path captured the ferocity, darkness and explosive energy of Swedish death metal more concise than most of their peers. Much of this can be attributed to many of the songs being around in one form or another for years before Entombed ever drew their logo on a cassette case. Nihilist, the precursor to Entombed, was a testing ground for 90% of Left Hand Pathâ??s material, and this moniker was whom was signed to Earache initially. After a minor lineup and name change, Entombed recorded what is now considered on of the benchmarks of Swedish Death Metal. We thought this would be a good chance to change things up a bit since we've had a string of 2-part shows, so this week we're featuring two acts that have nothing to do with one another. A must-listen for any true metal fan!
From just a few minutes of listening to this podcast, it is easy to hear that Mark and his co-presenters are serious about metal! Each podcast delves deep into different bands and analyses their career, style and what makes them so awesome! It is very refreshing to hear someone who loves this genre of music as much as I do !
Really good extreme metal podcast
Lots of different extreme metal showcased & discussed each week: a bit too much death metal for me, would prefer more of the black variety, but that's just a personal preference. Anyway, there's enough to keep everyone happy - whole episodes devoted to Emperor, Funeral Mist, Thorns, Ulver - can't complain!
Listening to several episodes gives you a broader view of the whole metal scene, as well as introducing you to great acts you'd never heard of: check out the Keelhaul episode (and then buy the CDs, because iTunes UK doesn't have them!).
Brilliant
Best metal Podcast I've heard.
I've only just started listening, but have downloaded loads of archive shows and can't wait to listen to them.
The guy's passion and knowledge for metal is clear to see.
