Kurt Wolfgang | Kurt Wolfgang is my guest this week in the TCJ Talkies "Talkie Hutt." Kurt is most recently known for his serialized graphic novel, Nothing Eve, which appeared in the now-defunct MOME, an anthology that Wolfgang appeared in from its inception. Earlier in his career, he self-published the No-Fie and Lowjinx minicomic series. His silent graphic novella, Where Hats Go, won the Xeric grant and appeared in NON #5, an anthology edited by Jordan Crane. Kurt has also been hard at work on Pinokio, an original graphic novel for Top Shelf Productions. | 19 10 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Alex Robinson & Ten Years of Box Office Poison | This conversation with Alex Robinson was recorded at this past weekend’s Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland. The title of the panel was "Ten Years of Box Office Poison", so the conversation focuses on the creation of that series and its eventual collection, and the place the book (which is the one Alex is most known for) has occupied in Alex’s creative life. We had an interesting chat about Alex’s different approaches to his different projects and some of the struggles and successes that have come from those. For those who don’t know, I’m very good friends with Alex, and host another podcast with him called The Ink Panthers Show!, which we also speak about a little bit in the conversation. Later in the chat we discuss how Alex’s aversion to collaboration might be part of what pushed him down the path toward creator-owned auteur-style alternative comics, and further, how the collaboration of podcasting is different from writing. | 14 9 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Tom Kaczynski | Tom Kaczynski is my guest in the TCJ Talkie Hutt this week. Tom is well known for the excellent run of short stories he created for the MOME anthology, while that was still a going concern. I hear he has a story in issue 22, which I’ve yet to see, so I am looking forward to that. Tom’s comics have also appeared in The Drama and The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2009. | 31 8 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Lisa Hanawalt | Lisa Hanawalt joins me in the Talkie Hutt for a lively chat about her comics, writing humorous pieces, performing, being in a relationship with another creator, and being the shy person at a party sitting on a couch drawing in a sketchbook. Lisa is the creator of the comic series I Want You #1 and 2, published by Buenaventura/Pigeon Press. She recently finished work on a children's book to be published by McSweeneys and has lately been taking the internet by storm with her hilarious movie reviews. | 17 8 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Center for Cartoon Studies Graduates | This week I'm talking to four graduates from The Center for Cartoon Studies: Lucy Knisley, Melissa Mendes, Joe Lambert, and Steve Seck. The Center for Cartoon Studies is a school in White River Junction, Vermont, which offers an MFA in cartooning, as well as one and two year certificates. I talk to each of the graduates about how they decided to attend CCS, what their experience there was like, and how things are going now that they're out in the real world. I also admit my intense jealousy that I can't spend two years up up in a remote location doing nothing but drawing comics. | 22 6 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Howard Cruse | Howard Cruse is my guest this week. Howard is the creator of Barefootz and Wendel, as well as editor of the anthology series Gay Comix, published by Kitchen Sink Press in the early 1980s. He is probably best known, however, for his stand-alone graphic novel, Stuck Rubber Baby, which was published by DC Comics Paradox Press imprint in 1995. Howard and I spend a good amount of time discussing this book, and how it came to be written. We talk about the editorial process, and how that played out with Howard's own writing habits, and we also get into some interesting questions about writing gay, black, women, and minority characters. | 8 6 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Jessica Abel | Jessica Abel joins me on the TCJ Talkies podcast this week. Jessica is perhaps best known for two Fantagraphics series, Artbabe and La Perdida, the latter of which was collected into graphic-novel form by Pantheon in 2006. Most of this interview is spent discussing her comics-making textbook Drawing Words & Writing Pictures, which she co-wrote with her husband, the cartoonist Matt Madden. We also talk about her experiences in the classroom, teaching comics at the School of Visual Arts, and a little bit about her work as a co-editor of the annual Best American Comics series. Also joining me this week is Jessica's Life Sucks co-writer, Gabe Soria, who stops by for a brief chat about the experience of creating that book. | 25 5 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Josh Cotter | Welcome to the second episode of the TCJ Talkies podcast. This time I’m pleased to welcome cartoonist Josh Cotter as my guest. Josh is probably best known for his books Skyscrapers of the Midwest and Driven By Lemons, both published by AdHouse books. Recently, Skyscrapers of the Midwest was adapted into a stage play in Columbus, Ohio. In this episode, Josh discusses his reactions to that show, and his feelings about the play’s inclusion of sections of a very frank Robot 6 interview. | 11 5 11 | Free | View In iTunes |
