Show #015: Get Your Podcast On! | So now you've read the essential 10-step guide to producing your first podcast, there really are no more excuses to stop starting, if that even makes sense. On today's show I welcome Laura Adams, Money Girl on the Quick and Dirty Tips podcasting network. Laura is amazing - packed with passion, totally clued-up on her subject matter and ready to share her podcasting journey and experiences with anyone who cares to listen. That means you, gorgeous! 10 steps to podcast Hot on the heels of writing that definitive guide to creating a podcast (http://www.thepodcastguy.com/launchpodcast), I wanted to go deeper into the various components and titillate your ears with another jam-packed segment of information and edutainment. I mention a video I created showing you one of the top tips on getting the most out of Audacity when it comes to creating a professional-sounding introduction. And look - it's here! About Audio Player I mentioned this in the 10 ways article. I use Audio Player as well as PowerPress so I can litter my shownotes with 'instances' of the podcast player so people don't have to scroll much to listen in. And also, one thing I omitted from this show was a certain tip about adding information to the playable 'instance' of your podcast's MP3 file in WordPress 'shownotes' posts. If you host your audio files in the same location as your WordPress installation (let's face it - unlikely) then Audio Player automatically picks up your ID3 tags and inserts them in the white box. For the longest time I wondered what options were available to us 'others'. Back in the day, I used to offer podcasts like this - with no information at all about what's on the show. Today, I only do it like this: Here's the difference in code you use: How did I get from nowhere to there? Well I did some digging after asking a bunch of people and getting no answers, and I discovered the solution was buried deep in the help section for the Audio Player plugin. Turns out to add scrolling information into that white space, you have to use pipes and some more data within the [] tags. So simple, yet so darn hard to find. More ways to customise instances created by the Audio Player plugin can be found here. That's your lot. The fun part right at the end of the show was intentional, by the way. I just figured you'd get it off the bat. Living with me to look in the mirror at really is tougher than you think, ha! | 25 10 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Show #013: What Happens Now? | It's been one helluva ride for podcasting in 2011. As we near the end of the year (well, not too far off) I speculate where we're going and why your business needs to be on board. I think maybe the time has come to change the name of podcasting to something more in keeping with the times and the marketplace. Online radio with benefits? It might not catch on, either. But there's something out there - and if you have any ideas, drop them in the comment box below. My special guest for this episode of The Podcast Guy Show is Bridie Jenner of Bridie's Typing Services in Australia. She's tops for transcriptions and all that, so perfect for repurposing your podcast as a blog post. Bridie asked me the ins and outs of podcasting and I was only too delighted to tell her what I thought. The interview is more of an informal chat - I think if you're looking to start your own show this is a 20-minute discussion that's well worth your ears-time. Also on the show: BeyondPod, arguably the finest and most sophisticated - yet simple - podcatcher I've ever used. And I've used a few. Available on Android - phones and tablets - this could revolutionise the way we consume podcasts with its unrivalled 'scheduled update' feature that means your favourite shows are literally a click away, wherever you are. Show #012: Radio of the future, with MediaUK’s James Cridland | Today's show was published to coincide with Next Radio - what I believe will be the first in a series of conferences designed with the independent audio producer in mind. It's hugely affordable, and hugely popular - which is whyI'm hugely frustrated I didn't get my name down in time before the big sold out sign came out. On episode 12 of The Podcast Guy Show I share with you an interview with the co-founder of Next Radio, James Cridland, of james.cridland.net and mediauk.com. James, a radio futurologist (are there others?!) has all his fingers on the pulse of the broadcasting industry and brings us some pretty fascinating insights on how podcasting fits into that landscape. We run the gamut of issues on what podcasting and radio needs to do to move forward together in harmony, and discuss among many other things the democratisation of content, the potential for podcasting of Radioplayer, and making all this audio content findable. Show #010: Anatomy of a Podcast | I've been wanting to talk to Lori Randall Stradtman about the Literally Social podcast for a while. I say 'talk' - when Lori talks, she purrs. It's a voice quite unlike any I've heard before - so I could reason that having my microphone turned down to almost zero recording this show was actually for your own benefit. Lori, founder of Social Media Design, joins me on this special episode of The Podcast Guy Show to talk about how Literally Social, the podcast for the author community, originally came about. Reach, engagement, awareness - tick! As podcasters and podcasting fans we already know the incredible capabilities of audio to inspire and entertain, and Literally Social has been no exception to that rule. Lori, a Social Media Examiner correspondent, shares insight into how the writing community has quickly taken the podcast to its hearts - and how in such a short space of time people are already getting in touch asking to be part of the Literally Social phenomenon. Disclaimer Literally Social was a podcast I worked on with Lori. She's long been an inspiration to me in social media circles and I have made a strong friend of her in the weeks since we began this project. Clearly from the audio results of this video show you'll see below, I'm now in search of my own mentor to help me figure out the whys and wherefores of the technical aspects behind video podcasting! The deets Find out much more about Literally Social over at literallysocial.net - and on Facebook, at facebook.com/literallysocial. And no, I wasn't kidding - this youngster in podcasting has already amassed more Facebook likes than The Podcast Guy. Telling me you don't like me no more?! :-D | 5 9 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Show #009: The Finale That Never Was | It's season finale for The Podcast Guy Show. I talk about my reasons for taking a break from the show and hail the launch of a new project - the European Podcast Award Show! I also explain why I'm on a TPG show sabbatical, and we welcome a very VIP guest - Bruce Sharpe, creator of Levelator and the amazing PluralEyes and DualEyes video and audio track synching app from Singular Software. While the show's on holiday, fret not: I'm always here for you. Whether you want to talk about starting a podcast, need your WordPress-powered website overhauled, or simply want to hang out, drop me an email at dave@thepodcastguy.com or ping me on Twitter @thepodcastguy. What now? While the #1 podcasting show for aspiring and established podcasters takes a break, I'm confident about leaving you in the more than capable hands of my audio associates spread far and wide. Here's a list of those mentioned on today's show: Ray Orteta - Podcasters Studio Dave Jackson - School of Podcasting Art of Podcasting. Now this site hasn't been updated in a while, but it's a great resource. Cliff Ravenscraft - Podcast Answer Man PodcastPerspective.com On this show, I didn't mention Donna Papacosta over at Trafalgar Communications or Jay Walsh at ProPodder, or Daniel Lewis of The Audacity to Podcast, podcast. I have now. Cracking content, great guys and gal. Do enjoy their work - you know I do. And be a perfectly passionate podcaster. Show #008: Noteworthy on iTunes | On today's show we take a close look at listener feedback, and how to inspire your audience to interact with you. I start off with a now-characteristic rant, this time lamenting the dire state of the UK in light of the civil unrest taking place in major cities across our once fair island (I'm talking only about the bit next to Northern Ireland and Eire here). I'm shortly to start working on a video series exploding the myth that podcasting is difficult. If you encountered any stumbling blocks when you started podcasting, drop me a line and I'll make sure to include reference to them and credit you and your show during one of the videos. Our keynote guest for today's show is Kate Arkless Gray - otherwise known as @radiokate on Twitter, or the girl who went round dressed as Kate Middleton at 'that' Royal Wedding earlier this year. Kate (not the Duchess of Cambridge one) is paid by Audioboo to work, which renders here one of the luckiest people around. Kate shares with us all that's good about Audioboo and why you should be using it on the side to accessorise your existing podcasting efforts. Audioboo and Spreaker both now offer podcast RSS feeds and I talk about how both have provided the European Podcast Award - for which I am UK ambassador - with invaluable publicity and lots of new nominations from each service. Many people have been asking how you get into the coveted New and Noteworthy and Featured slots on the iTunes Podcast directory. With this show having recently receive one of those premium spots I share with you a few hints as to how to emulate my success. If you host guests on your show and find that your levels are all over the place, I've found a solution - Levelator, one of the most essential tools for any beginner-to-intermediate podcast producer. Levelator co-creater Bruce Sharpe is joining me on a future show to talk about his latest piece of genius: PluralEyes, a tool that seamlessly syncs independent audio and video tracks (perfect when you're recording an audio stream separately to your video). Coming up tonight, I'm talking about life and my podcasting addiction to Angela Schaeffer, creator of Your Story Matters. I'm making my Radio Ear Network debut at 9pm EST and repeating myself (comme normale!) at 8am UK time, tomorrow (Wednesday August 10). This show - it's all about you! Show #007: Spectacular Spreaker! | Today's show begins with an uncharacteristic rant about one of my acquaintances in the podosphere starting up a 'how to podcast' membership site. While everyone should make money I feel a little like this is similar to making money out of baby children learning to walk. When I'm financially secure I want to set up a foundation whose chief mission is to coach people - for free - on how to tell tales using podcasting, or whatever the heck it's called by then. And then I 'fess up to being a bit of a dumb guy (I call it passion, but I know what you're thinking) with my outburst and get on with the rest of the show. Here's what's coming up today: Quick soundbite on the European Podcast Award: Have you nominated a show or voted yet? Francesco Baschieri, founder and CEO of the revolutionary live audio broadcasting platform Spreaker - which has kindly run European Podcast Award promos to spread the word far and wide - shares the story of this incredible application, which just gets better and better for podcasters the world over. I have a rant about people who don't like paying for stuff. Clearly I jumped out of bed the wrong side today. LinkedIn has a range of great groups for podcasters, including: PodcasterWhosWho.com, the Who's Who of Podcasting (members only but simple to join) Radio & Television Professionals Network (another members only group - but again, easy to join) Podcasting Technology Resource Group To get your podcast listed at DoubleTwist, email support@DoubleTwist.com with your podcast RSS feed. Need help with your feed? Drop me a line! Have you heard of Soundation? It's an excellent audio editing suite in your web browser. Extraordinary! Over at Neville Hobson's post on how to make podcasting take off for you, Donna Papacosta of Trafalgar Communications notes podcasting is about narrowcasting, not necessarily internet broadcasting. Think of your audience community - think niche. As podcasters we should all aim for 1,000 true fans. Here's why - and what to do to achieve this pivotal figure. This is a fabulous post on how to create more - and more meaningful - blog posts, that translates so well to podcasting. I share a link to the Pomodairo AIR application (Mac and PC-compatible) that helps you focus throughout the day) and discuss how Dragon Naturally Speaking can really add spark to your podcasting efforts. I recently discovered a simple tool and WordPress plugin that converts your images with interactive hotspots - you can add an audio player in there. When you’re producing a series of soundbites that need some kind of visual accompaniment, ThingLink could be your friend. Talking soundbites, had a great chat with the guys at SoundCloud. Apparently chunking down is a good idea for podcasters. Think about breaking down your shows into segments so people can pick and choose what they want to hear, when they have time. This show - it's all about you! Get in touch on The Podcast Guy listener line courtesy by Skypeing me at thepodcastguy and leaving a message. Tweet your thoughts on this show or business podcasting in general using the Twitter hashtag #tpglive. Drop by The Podcast Guy Facebook Page. Email me. Incidentally, I just discovered I'd written a post about Spreaker that never made it to the site. I'm adding it here so you can feel my excitement for the application. Let me know what you think once you've given it a try.... I'm under the Spreaker spell. I just landed back on earth after a 20-minute interview with Spreaker Online Radio CEO Francesco Baschieri realising that his online broadcasting platform has all the hallmarks of a huge success for podcasters everywhere. I was initially sceptical about the value of Spreaker when I discovered what I believed were limiting factors in its value. On the 'Plans' page features for the basic package - available free - made reference to a meagre 1 hour of space in your media library. | 2 8 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Show #006: Podcasting With Passion | Podcasting is the perfect job. Constantly discovering new stuff, sharing the very best things with your communities and refining, refining, refining to match the needs of your audience. Just like this latest episode of The Podcast Guy Show, the art form of podcasting brings together all that is good about life and learning for the benefit of everyone. That's what we often don't focus on as podcasters: That as broadcasters we can move many more people, create change much more widely than if we were going about our daily lives in the old-fashioned way. I dig that! Anyway, on today's show I'm sharing the secret of podcasting success. On yesterday's video I revealed the one thing we all need for our podcasts to succeed. It's so often overlooked as we obsess over the latest microphone hack or a new application on the block - neither of which matter to our listeners. I started out in podcasting believing that it was our listeners that called the shots, who decided whether or not our podcasts would achieve greatness. While they are important, it's not the listener - but your heart - that is in control. Today's big interview is with Greg Lloyd, co-founder of the live audio broadcasting system Mixlr. Brighton boy Greg learned the hard way how important it was to have a tool like Mixlr, and so together with his partner-in-audio Rob he created what is viewed by many podcasters as a must-try application. A few days ago saw the launch of the 2011 European Podcast Award, and I share with you the lowdown on what makes this such an important part of the podcaster's calendar. A cheesy promo for the EPA is also included for your listening, um, pleasure. I share what Podcamp co-founder Christopher S Penn thinks is the #1 most important thing about podcasting, and preview some of the great guests on forthcoming shows. Timings 01:01 - European Podcast Award 03:26 - All about the Earwolf Challenge 06:55 - Why passion is the key to podcasting success 15:07 - Keynote with Greg Lloyd, co-founder of Mixlr 37:47 - Christopher S Penn on podcasting This show - it's all about you! Show #005: Keeping It Simple | Hundreds of millions of people commuting to work. Hundreds of millions of blogs. So much confusion, so little value. Until one day... You discover podcasting. You open your mouth. You change the game. You create, curate, deliver value. These are exciting times for podcasting, and this is The Podcast Guy... After a few days figuring out how I could best add value to the podcasting community - and those aspiring to share their message harnessing the power of podcasting - I'm delighted to welcome Neville Hobson, legendary podcaster and communicator of the For Immediate Release show, to the latest episode of The Podcast Guy. Neville has amassed huge experience of how to podcast effectively and today he shares with us some of the great achievements at For Immediate Release, and his hopes for the future of the medium. You can listen to For Immediate Release here. Elsewhere on today's show I share my recent experiences with people wanting to podcast and explain why the show is going to go back to basics. It's all about value, and it's all about simplification. Everyone, everywhere, needs someone to cut through the noise and provide ways to get the most out of life. That's where you, the podcaster, strikes gold - as content curator. I talk about Donna Papacosta's immense digital storytelling presentation she recently gave at the International Association of Business Communicators in San Diego earlier this year. You can watch Donna's presentation here - it's a must for anyone interested in creating compelling podcasts. I also mentioned my interview with the fabulous Rachel Foster, of Copywriter Toronto, who produced a glittering Podcasting 101 article over at my cause celebre, the Content Marketing Institute. Finally, I talk about the launch of the European Podcast Award. Neville was kind enough to record a trail especially for the forthcoming European Podcast Award Podcast (a mouthful, I know!) and if you can host a short promo for the award on your podcast, drop me a line. On episode 6 of The Podcast Guy I'll be talking about why podcasting builds your reputation and we'll be hearing from Greg Lloyd of the online live broadcasting platform, Mixlr. Show #004: Geller on the loose! | I'm enchanted and distracted to oblivion to host one of my afar-mentors and greatest radio inspirations on The Podcast Guy at such an early stage of its life. For me to be able to talk radio and podcasting with Valerie Geller is like an eight-year-old hooked on Fantasia to meet Mickey Mouse and be taken on a guided tour of Cinderella's Castle. It's seriously that monumental. That's why I was able to happily forgive the death rattle of the aircon unit in her New York hotel room (must get the name of that establishment to ensure avoidance of metropolitan insomnia next time I'm in Crazy Town) to enjoy Valerie divulging so much gold about the importance of podcasting; to hear we're on the right track; tyo hear how we touch people in ways pixels never could. There are no boring stories, only boring storytellers. That was a quote from Valerie, whose new book Beyond Powerful Radio is a must-have for any audio content creator, on her segment in episode 4 of The Podcast Guy show. Those words could so easily have come from Ira Glass (watch his compelling video series on storytelling here) or Nancy Duarte, two further legends of tale telling who confirm to me that providing we know our stuff and are able to articulate it in the most lucid and enchanting way we can, the rest is history. Try stuff and see - the minute we have the technology to do something new, just DO IT! On today's show I also played an Audioboo about my thoughts on Mixlr. You can find out much more about this new, game-changing live audio broadcasting platform in a very soon-to-be-released interview with me and the company's co-founder Greg Lloyd. If you want to hear it desperately, drop a comment in the box and I'll bring it forward! Audio definitely brings joy, according to Radio: The Emotional Multiplier, a hot-off-the-press report by the Radio Advertising Bureau. We're finally starting to prove to our paymasters that audio content can stir, provoke change, develop emotional ties between advertisers and listeners. This is such an important point for podcasters looking for advertisers and sponsors, and the report is a must-read. Microphone shootout puts Heil PR40 in 3rd place. That's my weapon of choice and no ElectroVoice will ever change that. But it's a great read so check it out. Radio futurist James Cridland digs hard so you don't have to. Read James' incredible stuff. Coming up on future shows: Quick And Dirty Tips' Money Girl Laura Adams, For Immediate Release's Neville Hobson and Audioboo's Kate Arkless Gray. Any other incredible podcasters you want on the show? Name 'em and I'll make it happen. Lastly, drop by The Podcast Guy on iTunes and leave me a review and some gold stars. Thank you - you rock! Show #003: The Power of Podcasting | Learn from the master of engaging podcasts when we showcase the epic achievements of the Faroe Islands Podcast, find out about the day the lightbulb went on, and hear how Dave and the European Podcast Awards are taking podcasting to a new level of recognition and success. It really has been the most incredible week for podcasting here at The Podcast Guy. You'll know I'm on a major crusade to generate way bigger awareness for business podcasting and us podcasters in general in the mainstream media, not to mention podcasting as a beautiful accessory to radio which is podium on my list of priorities. The word is 'epic'... Well, this week has been a barnstormer. Meetings with people of influence, celebrating the success of podcasters far and wide, and a chance meeting with one of the leading movers and shakers in US radio, with an interview to follow on next week's show. In Episode 3 we review a week when the power of podcasting has taken on new meaning for me at The Podcast Guy. Meetings with the awesome Rachel Foster of Copywriter Toronto and Lori Randall, inspirational social media mentor of Social Media Design, have really helped cement in my mind how to grow The Podcast Guy for your benefit by becoming much more aware of how podcasting forms a critical part of any business with something to say and share. How to build an awesome podcast Consistency is everything in the world of audio marketing and podcasting and one of my heroes both in exemplifying this and incredibly moving content is Matt Workman and his team on the Faroe Islands Podcast. Matt joins me to talk about a very important milestone in the podcast's history - it's a wonderful interview with one of the nicest and most knowledgeable podcasters around. I talk about the imminent launch of the European Podcast Awards, and share with you a glimpse of the stunning chat I had today with Valerie Geller, author of Creating Powerful Radio and lately, Beyond Powerful Radio - which really speaks to us as podcasters since we're at the vanguard of the here and now. Don't forget to stick around for Episode 4: It's going to be a belter. The knives are out! Finally we look at why I think if you're not business podcasting, you are missing out on the biggest and most cost-effective way to market your business since the dawn of the internet. It's powerful stuff and if you like your Swiss Army knives and little black dresses, you'll fit right in! Show #002: Heroes and Hurdles | Today I hit the ground running with a big round-up of what's been happening at The Podcast Guy and beyond in helping you to build a podcast for your business success. I kick things off with a big, long rant about why I think with Podcasting 3.0 we're in the most exciting phase to date of the evolution of this fabulous audio marketing medium. I also wanted to give full credit to my 5 greatest podcasting heroes and explain more about what makes them stellar members of the audio and storytelling communities. Believe me - you'll get stacks out of following these people if you don't already belong to their tribes. Last week I wrote about how crucial it is that you define measurable outcomes every time you create an audio production. There's more on that in this episode of The Podcast Guy show. Finally, but not in that particular order, I talked about the incredible achievement of Matt Workman in making 100 episodes of the Faroe Islands Podcast. Great work, Workman! Oops I lied to you. I mentioned how I would share with you the most important thing you can do to create incredible traction on your blog. I didn't get round to it - time eluded me. But you can find out more about the #1 weapon to building amazing blog traffic here. Your turn! Show #001: What The…? | First up, this show is all about you. If I could superimpose your oral majesty over mine I would do so. In the absence of that, I want you to know that anything I can do to make The Podcast Guy show more relevant to what you want to know about podcasting for business, I will do. To get in touch with me: Twitter at @thepodcastguy Skype - thepodcastguy Email - dave@thepodcastguy.com I would love to hear from you whenever, wherever! With that said, and the faint shrill of trumpeteers in the background, may I welcome you to the inaugural episode of The Podcast Guy! I thought plenty about emitting a show on podcasting for business. Let me tell you I didn't go into this lightly. The world doubtless has enough podcasts on podcasting, but I couldn't find one that really dug into the essence of what it takes to podcast for business success. I don't profess to being the absolute best podcaster in the world. I don't know if I'm even in the top 5. But what I do know is what it takes to create an amazing podcasting strategy to connect with your customers, so that's what The Podcast Guy show will be all about. And what better way to begin than with that awesome word cloud above! It's created based on everything that happened on The Podcast Guy website the week the show launched. You gotta hand it to the kids at Wordle - they make vowels and consonant look real lovely. About today's show I admit myself this show is a bit of a scene-setter for what's to come. You'll get a sense for the flow, though I waffled too much while trying to find my feet. This was the first time I recorded a live audio and video podcast simultaneously, and the post-processing in Adobe Premiere Pro using PluralEyes took longer than expected which is why you'll hear that this episode was created exactly two weeks ago! But we did get to some content. We, being I, and you, my incredible friend. I talked about the importance of consistency and making sure you offer your listeners the chance to feedback at every opportunity. Getting a plan together is super important when putting together a podcasting strategy. You could do worse than start by figuring out the essentials for your audio marketing production by downloading The Successful Podcast Checklist I want to find people who can really benefit from internet radio. That's why I sent an email to my local, cash-starved council to propose such a solution to reaching out to its communities in a cost-effective way. You can read that email I sent to Sefton Council here. Aesthetics I'm releasing The Podcast Guy show in mono right now since it's just me - but as we bring on guests, I'll trickle shows out in stereo format to tickle your ears with fresh-smelling sonic sensations. I'm hoping that each show will only be around 15 minutes in length so you can fit it in to your hectic schedule - and equally importantly, so it fits on YouTube. Talking about YouTube, here's the video version. And you'll always find the audio version right at the bottom of the page. Before you choose whether to tease your eyes or ears, here's the feedback chat again: Twitter at @thepodcastguy Skype - thepodcastguy Email - dave@thepodcastguy.com One last thing I'm recording the next episode of The Podcast Guy show tomorrow - Friday, 17th June, at 3.30pm UK time - that's 7.30am PST and 10.30am EST. You'll be able to watch it on a dedicated Live! page and chip in with your ideas and comments. | 16 6 11 | Free | View In iTunes |
